Sep 29, 2010Okay, here's something that I could easily do the hard way and manually wire up each form element and save it to a datatable in memory, but there has to be a more efficient way to do it.
Here's what I have:
1. A strongly typed datatable and tableadapter in a XSD name Orders
2. A formview control which currently is connected to an ODS connected to the Orders tableadapter, this makes it easy to wire up the databindings for each form field in design view
I would like to:
- bind the the formview to an instance of the strongly typed datatable, and then save the dt to a session object without interacting with the actual database
- load forms on subsequent pages from the dt in session
- ultimately save the dt info to an actual database table on the third page
I've read some solutions where a custom class is created, but to me this seems like almost as much work as wiring up the form field to the table columns manually in code.

Feb 18, 2010I have a DetailsView (DV) control, an ObjectDataSource (ODS) control, and a button on a page. I have 2 classes in the App_Code directory (Customer and CustomerDAO). The DAO class provides static methods for the ODS control and simply hack values in (ie...no real database selects/updates). The Customer class has 2 properties (Id and Name) and a default constructor. The page takes an ID on the querystring and determines if the DV control is in insert or edit mode. If in edit mode, it sets the SelectParameter on the ODS (id field), calls ODS.Select(), and then calls DV.DataBind(). The existing (although fake) customer is loaded and display properly when this happens. I then change the name of the Customer in the DV and click the Button to save the new data.
Everything seems to be wired up correctly as the UpdateMethod that is specified in the ODS control is called and succeeds (even in my real example with my database). The problem is that the BoundFields in the DV control have not been updated with the new values and therefore the existing values are updated in the database and my changes are lost. I have handled the OnUpdating event of the ODS and the values are still the old values. I have also handled the OnItemUpdating event of the DV control and the NewValues IOrderedDictionary still has the old values in it also. In looking at the MSDN article for the UpdateMethod, it states the following:

Parameters are added to the UpdateParameters collection from three sources:
From the data-bound control, at run time.
From the UpdateParameters element, declaratively.
From the Updating event handler, programmatically.
I am using the BoundField classes in my DV control so I would have assumed that the first bullet above would have handled the updating of values, but it doesn't appear to work with the way I am doing it. If I set the values explicitly in the OnUpdating event that is fired by the ODS control (the 3rd bullet) the right values are updated (again...even in my real database situation). It seems like my only issue is that the automatic binding that I expect from the DV control isn't working as I would expect it to. Here is the code that I have in my fake example:

Dec 13, 2010I am using a stored procedure for a sqldatasource to update a formview. I believe that I am passing the Obligation_Status value correctly to the stored procedure but the oblgation status field is always updated AS NULL in the database. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Forms Data Controls :: Updating Formview And DropDownList?
Mar 26, 2010One of the fields on my formview is a dropdownlist. When I go into edit mode the dropdownlist gets set to the correct value and works fine up to this point. Problem is I just can't see how to get the newly selected value of the dropdownlist to persist to the database when update is clicked. The DDL is a category list and I want to allow changing of the category for each record. Like I said I have it working so it displays the correct category for the record but if I change the DDL (change category) the new selected value doesn't get updated in the database. It just keeps using the binded value that was originally assigned to the selected value of the DDL. see code snippit

The above snippet is how I am binding the DDL. Now to not bore you with a ton of code paste I use various events of the formview to make sure the value displayed in the DDL is correct for the record that I am viewing at the time. All that works just fine. Where I need some pointers is the when I enter edit mode and change the DDL from say fire to ice it isn't getting persited to the database, all other info in the record gets updated just fine but the DDL never changes. I have tried several angles to getting this working and TBH my brain is yelling BREAK TIME.

Jul 22, 2010I have a FormView which will bind values from the database using a ID parameter from queryString. In my database, I have a field named CategoryList which can store multiple CategoryID (From Category table) in CSV format (eg: "1,3,4,5"). I'm using SQLDataSource as my datasource.
So, I want to show the selected category in CheckBoxList. Meaning that, the checkbox will be checked (on page load) if its ID is in the CategoryList. Also, I want to allow the user to check/uncheck the CheckBoxList and updates to the database in CSV format. How can i do that?

May 4, 2010I have a sql-bound formview with three DDL's bound to individual SQL datasources. In edit mode, I want to set the selected value to the formview's value, and this works:

But it only works when there's a match between what's in the formview's DS and the DDL's DS.
Unfortunately, there may be instances where the the formview's DS may return a null value or a value different from the DDL's datasource...and when that happens I receive a compilation error like:
'ddl2' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.
Parameter name: value
What do I need to do to trap that condition before attempting to set the selected value? Do I need to set the selected value of the DDL in formview's dataBinding or dataBound event, by looping through the DDL and checking for a match first?

Feb 22, 2011im learning webforms and asp.net in general and what i have so far is a formview that displays data being pulled from a sqldatasource, but i also want a checkboxlist that can be used to input information and display information. this checkboxlist is insode the formview. the problem im having is that my formview is calling a datasource with an specific stored procedure with one table and my checkboxlist needs to called another stored procedure that has a different table. formviews does not allow you to have tow different datasources so how can i make this possible? ill paste the front end code and the backend code so you guys can see what im trying to do.

Dec 6, 2010I have a label inside a formview that is not bound to anything.
Lets say I have a table of customers (with a key field called CustomerID), and then another table that has all their orders (with amount spent per order (OrderID) - based on CustomerID)
On the FormView there is a key field (CustomerID) (this is to be used as an INPUT parameter to a SP - which is to return the SUM of all the customers (Order_Totals). I could nest a view within a view I suppose to get this result, however, I just want a label to simply show this ScalarValue.
Basically, I want the label to show the aggregate (SUM) total amount each customer has spent on all orders. I have a SP called SumCost with two Fields (one a grouped by field CustomerID and the other a Summed Total of each customer's orders SumCost)
SELECT [SumCost] FROM [SumCost] WHERE ([CustomerID] = @CustomerID)
I test my SP and it works great, returning the value based on CustomerID - no problem.
My problem is getting the CustomerID passed into the SP on runtime (do I put it in FormView2_Databound) and putting the value into the label (CustTotalLbl) which is inside this form.

Jun 2, 2010I have a web page with a gridview & formview (master/detail relationship) combo. On page load the gridview shows all records from a SQL table. On my page I have a button that when clicked shows the formview in Insert mode to allow users to add a new record to the data. I have also added a column to my gridview that has a link. When a user clicks this link it hides the gridview and shows the formview in edit mode with the detail from the record selected from the gridview.
In my formview I am using a listbox control to allow users to select multiple values. The choices in the listbox are populated by a SQL data table. I have successfully written code to post the selected listbox values to my SQL data field during Insert. When the user selects a record to edit I have code in the databound event to select values in the listbox from the choices based on the value in the sql data field. This works as well. My problem is that I cannot figure out the correct code to update my SqL data when a user is editing the record and makes changes to the selected listbox value. I have included my design code for my listbox in my formview edittemplate and also my behind code that I have attempted.

Jan 28, 2010I'm doing research on framework development for my company. SInce I will be developing a framework I can not simply declaire all my control in the code in front. Receiently I've been having trouble binding the controls from my ListView to my ObjectData Source. Basicly the properties in my DataObjectTypeName are not populated when the ObjectDataSource "Update" command is thrown. I recieve no error, I just get null values. All I need is an equivalent to this statement for code-behind ...
<%# Bind("AbstractText") %>This would solve all my issues. Ofcouse I will most likely need to bind the control's ID somewhere but that is not an issue. How do I Bind a control to a property in my DataObjectTypeName from the code-behind?

Apr 24, 2010I'm using an edittemplate to handle both editing and inserting for a Formview. In Insert mode, the Identity parameter is not needed (and cannot be used in the parameter list). In Edit mode, I need the bound value to know which record to update. So, what I tried to do is set the Text property in the OnDataBinding method.

The result is that the field is bound for Insert anyway, shows up as a parameter, and my insert statement fails (since this extra field messes up the field order of the parameters). Plus, it is always null in Insert mode by definition.
Is the OnDataBinding method too late to clear the property? If so, where can I do this, since PageLoad is too early (the template has not loaded yet and I cannot Findcontrol the field. Or is there a better way to handle all this?
Forms Data Controls :: FormView Updating (again) Upon Page Refresh After Successful Edit / Update
May 21, 2010I have a strange issue with the FormView. After working through some issues getting the update to work (as this is my first experience with FormViews) I now have a new issue. After I perform an update, and the FormView updates and returns to read mode, if I hit F5 (refresh) the FormView performs another update to the datasource, despite the fact it is read-only mode and none of the fields on the screen are editable.
I would think that a refresh in read mode for the FormView after an edit would simply refresh the data from the database, not perform another update. Again, the FormView is in Read Only Mode, but a refresh is creating another Update event (which I can debug and see if I break in the ItemUpdating event). This only happens after I perform an edit, not when the page initially loads.

When the dropdownlist causes the postback, the formview does not display the data (it's there, I've double checked using query analyzer). Also, the OnIndexChanged only makes a button visible and has nothing to do with the data. What am I missing?
