I am using the datanavigateurlformatstring within a datagrid property with the property set something like;
editrecords2.aspx?RID={0}&SID={1}&LID={2}&DIP={3}&IID={4}&TID{5}
Unfortunately, when the new webpage opens, the url contains lots of spaces and I'm struggling to remove all of the spaces. The code actually works but looks a bit messy, see below.
"http://localhost:34354/website1/editrecords2.aspx?rid=2&sid=2& dip=5 & iid=3 &tid=3"
but should look like this
"http://localhost:34354/website1/editrecords2.aspx?rid=2&sid=2&dip=5& iid=3&tid=3"

I'm using the DetailView control to display employee details from a specfic company, but it seems when I try to create the query in the data source wizard I'm unable to select the variable for the WHERE clause, only the web pages control components.
The employees are selected through the company name which is entered at the beginning of the page and in turn is used to select the company id.

I'm evaluating two options of accessing a server side data on client side. Little bit confused about the efficiency or may be you can call it as finding best approach to do it.
I need to access a server side data may be an integer value in javascript on client side. I know about two options to do it.Create a public variable or property on server side and set it to javascript variable on client side as below:
var value = eval(<% =value %>);
Create a asp hidden variable and set value in this hidden variable from server side and access it through javascript using document.getElementById().
Which is the best approach and what are the pros and cons?

I have a gridview with a hyperlinkfield inside of it. There is a dropdownlist that re-databinds the gridview onselectedindexchanged. I'm using the datanavigateurlformatstring attribute of the hyperlinkfield to make the url, and in in most cases it works as it should. HOWEVER, when one particular item is selected from the dropdownlist the associated links that are supposed to be created in the hyperlinkfield do not work. They arent actually clickable. In the source they have no href (which is what the datanavigateurlformatstring is supposed to set along with datanavigateurlfields). I have debugged to see that before and after databinding the information going into the control is correct, but still it doesnt work. In every other case it works.

In ASP.NET WebForms I want to pass arbitrary data from server to client and back again. I am serializing to JSON and have been simply producing JavaScript that creates the object on the client. I have no problem sending data to the server with ajax, but there are situations where I also want to send a Javascript object data back to the server on postbacks. So I guess it needs to be in a hidden field.
1) What is the best way to do this in terms of minimizing complexity and optimizing space and efficiency? In researching this I discovered Protocol Buffers but there does not seem to be a good C# implementation. I did find one, but it was a couple years old and self-described as buggy so that scared me.
2) If I just pass a JSON string, how can I be sure it will be safe to include as the value for a hidden field? Is there any reason I might not want to do this? I could Base64 encode, but it seems like this adds a lot of overhead. What is considered the best or preferred method?

I am trying to pass data from client to server using a hidden field. If I use a button, then OnClientClick sets the value, and OnClick does the postback and all is well.
However, I am responding to a Client event, and although this works I get no postback. How do I now force a postback from my client handler?

I am trying to pass a variable within a selectcommand statment in ASP.NET and I have researched online how to do it but I can't seem to find a way to do it...What I am trying to do is write a code for a web page that will display a page with useful links on it where the links are separated into different topics and where everything is dynamically grabbed from a database. This is what I have so far:
<!-- Start MainContentRegion -->
<h1>Useful Links</h1>
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"

I am bindibg data to a grid and in my asp page I have the following asp:HyperLinkField:
asp:HyperLinkField
DataNavigateUrlFields="serialno"
DataTextField="serialno"
HeaderText="serialno" DataNavigateUrlFormatString="DeviceDetails.aspx?serialno={0}"
/>
This is working perfectly, but when I add a second parameter to the querystring it does not work anymore:
DataNavigateUrlFormatString="DeviceDetails.aspx?serialno={0}&id={1}"This
I get the following error during DataBind to a grid: [System.FormatException] = {"Index (zero based) must be greater than or equal to zero and less than the size of the argument list."} What does this mean? Is {1} not a string or is it because of something else?

There are two frames. In ASP page 1 that is being displayed in frame 1, we have a form with hidden variables. On some action this from is submitted to frame 2 with action as ASP page 2 (target = frame2, action = 'ASP Page 2') using POST method. But on ASP page 2 when we try to get Form's hidden variable via Request object, sometimes we get them correctly but sometimes they are blank. Generally, first or second time, they show some values but after that they go blank. This problem is seen in IE 7 only and has not been observed in any other version of IE or other browsers.

I have an application that goes through a series of questions and I have a view that shows each question based on the ViewData.
I would like to store the QuestionID (the view uses this to determine which question to show), but I'm curious if I should be storing the CurrentQuestionID in the Session or as a hidden field?
I am sure this is pretty common and I was curious what the conventions/best practices were for this sort of thing.

Question. Say for example if i have a business entity -> Customer, which has customerId, customerName and customerType. I have created an asp:Hidden Variable hdnCustomer to runat="server"
If i wanted to serialize the value of the customer business entity (in the code behind) to the hdnCustomer then how would i do that?
// Psudo code
Collection customerList = new Collection();
customerList = BusinessAccess.GetCustomerList();
hdnCustomer = serialize and assign the value of 'customerList' to hdnCustomer;
...
...
// Later on a select index change of one of the drop down lists
inside the event handler for the drop down list
{
Collection customerList = new Collection();
customerList = deserialize the value from hdnCustomer
int a = Convert.ToInt32(ddlDropDown.SelectedValue);
foreach(a in customerList)
{
// Do something
}
}

I have 10 hyperlink controls. Depending on which hyperlink is pressed I want to pass a value to the target page. I think the easiest way would be to pass the value using URL of the hyperlink controls. Something like <asp:HyperLink ID="HyperLink1" NavigateUrl="~/News.aspx?id=>. I can pass just a value, but I want to pass a value from a variable.
<asp:HyperLink ID="HyperLink1" runat="server"

Nested GridView Control returns "Object variable or With block variable not set" when outer GridView returns rows.
The Nested GridView Control works as long as the outer GridView returns rows, the following code works: [Code]....
Object variable or With block variable not set.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object variable or With block variable not set.
Source Error:
Line 118: If e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.DataRow Then
Line 119: Dim myStatus_ID As SqlDataSource = CType(e.Row.FindControl("sqlDeviceStatusAssign"), SqlDataSource)
Line 120: If Not e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID") Is Nothing Then
Line 121: myStatus_ID.SelectParameters(0).DefaultValue = e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID")
Line 122: End If
I have tried checking for IsDbNull and checking to see if a label exists in a given row. This code *If Not e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID") Is Nothing Then* appears to do nothing.Same with the following:
*Dim localLblItemReference As Label = CType(e.Row.FindControl("lblItemReference"), Label)
*If Not localLblItemReference Is Nothing Then
******************************************************************************************
To further clarify my question above, I am looking for a method to detect e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID") is nothing/null due to the outer GridView returning 0 results in a query.I have a (Outer) GridView Control with another GridView Control inside of a template field with it's associated SqlDataSource control.
In the "Protected Sub GridViewReport_RowCreated", I provide the Select Parameter for the associated SqlDataSource with the DataItem row value.When the (Outer) GridView Control does not return any rows, the "e.Row.DataItem("Status_ID")" throws a:
Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object variable or With block variable not set.
