I have my data grid and sort on a column but the row formatting stops working. I simply selected a format using the autoformat option and picked classic. Am I meant to reapply the row formatting after the sort? And if so how?

I have a datagrid with two columns ( File Name, and Date Created ). I want them to be sorted when clicked (ASC or DESC). I went into the design view and added the allow sorting feature and added the column names, so they are clickable in the header of the data grid. I also already added the onsortcommand as well.
My datagrid is named dgFileList and the onsortcommand method is named dgFileList_SortCommand.
The procedure that is already loading on page load is a DataSet. (where I think my problem is)I dont have anything in the back end beside the dgFileList_Sortcommand method. From what I have read, it seems like I can't use a DataSet to be sorted...I'm using visual studios 2005, C#, not VB.

I am really fed up with reviewing a good lot of web pages on how we can possibly customize the gridview to enable sorting and paging. So many sites have listed out a lot of information and so many guidances. But the problem is that one works out fine and the other is a burden. I really feel bad about being given the job of customizing this kind of a gridview which has no user friendly approach to it. Also, this control is rendered without the pager links inside the <tfoot> tag. I have tried the Pear Pager in php. It is that good and easy to use and compared to that, the gridview in asp.net is the worst ever control i have ever tried so far.
1. i can use the images to indicate the sorting direction

Kindly look into this type of requirement and firstly tell me whether this is possible with the gridview control. I would like this request even to be escalated to the designers of the gridview control also, so that Microsoft comes out with a reply THAT WORKS and not the kind of stuff like surfing through a lot of links and pages and finally wasting a lot of days precious time and still breaking the head with this useless control. I have spent a lot of time in searching for a perfect way. Not writing a code that is non-standard. I am really serious b'cos I have spent weeks in customizing this control. I have a report with a textbox inside a matrix that is set to "Go To URL" as it's action. I have set it's underline property to true, and it's forecolor to blue.In the designer when previewed, the textbox shows as blue and underlined. However, once I deploy it to the server and try to run it from a my browswer on the server, it loses the blue coloring, and under some fields it loses the underline. In some cases it keeps the underline.

I know how to handle the filtering of the grid (create a criteria and set to rowfilter of the dataview) But, I dont know how to get the value of the column of the selected row.
The new values entered by a user are lost when a error occurs.

I would like the selectedvalue of the dropdown to display additional data base on its selection in multiple text boxes.
I have tried using the DropDownList OnSelectedIndexChanged property, within a DataGrid EditiItemTemplate, but I cannot retrieve data from the selection. (AutoPostBack is "True"). I can however use a button onclick event to fire a "prre-defined" selection value.

I noticed that with some of the data controls (like gridview and listview) the page loses focus when you click edit, update, etc. So if your data control is somewhere lower on your page, you'd have to scroll down to get to it again. Is this normal or is there a way to keep the focus or location on where you were previously?
View 2 RepliesI have a Gridview with edit and update feature enabled. It displays the data correctly but when I click on the Edit linkbutton(to edit the data), I get the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".
I tried debugging and found that the row which I click (say editindex is 1) loses its value. I could identify this while debugging the code, when the code flow moves to the rowdatabound event, the label (or for that matter any control in the rowdatabound event) shows a null value and eventually errors out.
I am unable to figure out as to why the control specified in the rowdatabound event loses its value when editing. Note: The lost valueow data is the one which I tried editing.

In my access datasource, I have set the selectcommand to what the user desires via a DDL. So the user chooses say, all names beginning with "B". But as soon as user clicks to page to the next page, the filter is gone. What is the way to preserve the filter. I have only merely rebound the gridview in the Pageindexchanging event which obviously is not doing the trick. Does this call for a session var to hold the users choice?

When I click Edit for that record, the Gridview flashes and goes back to the 1st row. If I search for the record again it is in edit mode. Is there some setting to keep focus where it is? I have a gridview with columns 'Edit', 'Delete', 'View Results' and other details. The 'Edit' column opens a modal popup to edit the record. The 'View Result' column is in a login view and this column is only visible to users belonging to the group 'Manager' as below:

When the page is first loaded, the hyperlinks are displayed correctly. however, after editing a record and saving the changes, the 'View Results' column loses the hyperlink.
I tried creating a temp hyperlink column outside a loginview control and this seems to work correctly.
is it possible to disable sorting on specific columns? 5 out of 7 columns have to be sortable, two not sortable. The columns are created dynamically in code behind, so I think doing this with mark up is out of the question. When I say disabled, I'm hoping that the underline wont show on the column header when you mouse over it.
View 1 RepliesI have a datagrid that is displaying data that is being returned from a stored procedure. That works fine. The problem is that I want to do sorting. I know that there is sorting functionality in the grid, however, I don't want to go back to the server and get a new set of data. What I want to do is just re-sort the data that is already being displayed.
Basically, I couldn't not find an easy solution to this issue. I tried updating my dataGrid to a gridView control and even that (for my particular issue) was difficult. I wound up un-doing all the changes and just adding another grid that had just the data I wanted for the requirement. If anyone else has an issue like this I would recommend taking it out of a datagrid and writing it in jQuery. I could of written a table that had the data I wanted (and fully sortable using a plug-in mentioned below) in 15 minutes compared to the hours I spent trying to jam a square peg into a round hole.
