I want to add a drop down list so that on update a user has to select something from a list rather then free text
ive googled and come across loads of info on this but i cant get anything to work

'm using a textbox to get the first 5 letters of the name.
An sqldatasource then finds the people who have names > than the five letters and picks up their ID numbers as well as their names.
After that I use a second sqldatasource to get one individual from that dropdownlist's persons name and id number and then using a detailsview I display that person.
Well both sqldatasouces work fine but it just does not pass the ID number when I debug it.
I have a dropdown list within a details view that allows me to set 1 or many categories to a perticular record(in this case a photo). The select command in this case only displays those catetegories that are not already attached to the selected photo.
all works well and as you select a category and add it to the database the category is removed from the dropdown list and is added to a gridview which shows all categories that photo is stored with.
My Problem is that when i delete the category from the gridview the dropdown list does not delete with said deleted item unless i do a "click in URL bar and press enter" to totally refresh the page.....
how to refresh the dropdown list in the details view after the gridview item has been deleted?

in one of the text fields I want to limit what the user can insert to a set of key words. So the obvious thing to do is to present the User with a drop down box to select a key word.
So I have converted the text field into a template and I thought I could replace the <InsertItemTemplate> in the details view with the drop down box.
Well it looks like what I want but when I INSERT the data that field is not inserted into the database.
So I guess I need to Bind the Drop Down somehow to the Insert - How do I do that ?

I have 3 drop downs in a details view (populated from a gridview) during insert mode.
Dropdown 1
Dropdown 2 --> Based on drop down one
Dropdown 3 --> Based on drop down two
I am curious of how to handle the autopostback to update 2 and 3 since they are part of the detailsview, there isn't a selected_index_changed event.
I am ok with adding items to them on page load, just not for cascading of them...
I have on one page a grid view that has a a delete bit and create new form, these both work. when the user clicks the edit button/link the id for that field is thrown in the url to a new page with a details view on with its default mode to "Edit". I have a stored procedure to update the SQL dB which works when run in SQL. however when the values are chaged in the details view, I click the update button and it says that it has succesfully updated and throws no errors... It has not?
I think the problem is getting the new values out of the details view. which i have been doing like this...

I have a web part that is deployed in a MOSS 2007 application. The web part has a text box for entry of an ID number and a button that fills a dataset from the db based on the supplied ID and binds this to a details view. The details view is a private variable declared at the top of my web part class, the details view is then instantiated and various properties set along with the event handlers in the CreateChildControls() Sub.

After checking the user inputted ID number for malicious chars I fill a data set.

The problem is that when I click the auto generated Edit link nothing happens and if I then click it for a second time the editable text boxes appear but have no data in them and my data key appears to have been overwritten. I have also tried entering new values into the text boxes and clicking the Insert link and then looping through the NewValues collection inside the ItemUpdating event but this displays nothing!
I have a details view that is hidden and want to run an update when my page loads using a query string.

I have a Drop Down List, a GridView and a DetailsView. The Gridview is the master, the details is the records detail view. When we edit a record and click the update button, I want the page to refresh the gridview and detailsview. Right now after clicking the update, nothing happens, it just updates the current details record.

However, the original data is still saved. If they are replacing the current data with new data, that works fine and updates/saves correctly. The Html.DropDownList was correctly populated on PageLoad() event. But the GetListViaJson() action method, when called on the button event, did not update the "Select1" element. how to solve this update problem.
I have a details view with buttons in the footer. When the user clicks the edit button the calls the ChangeEditMode() method. I want to change the mode of the details view to edit mode which seems to work fine. It goes into edit mode with a text box. I also want it to set the visible property of the edit button to false and set the visible property of the update button to true. Then while still in edit mode the user can click the update button that will call the appropriate method to persist the changes.
I got the changemode() to change to edit but can't change the visible property of the buttons correctly. This is what I have so far. Can some one please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I have a detailsview which includes a drop down list bound to an array. However, when I click on the cancel button the dropdownlist values disappear. I have tried to solve the problem by rebinding the values back into list on the cancel command event, but this has made no difference. Does anyone know how to solve this?

I have a repeater which contains dropdown list in it.
The items in the dropdown list are all the same at fist.
But if i select a item in one dropdown, then the selected item will be deleted in the other dropdown list.
For example A, B, C, D,E are the five items in dropdown list, and repeater has three lines.
If A is selected in the dropdown list in the first line of repeater, then the dropdown list in the other lines will only have four items to select, they are B, C, D, E.
If then D is selected in the dropdown list in the third line of repeater, then the dropdown list in the second line will only have B, C, E to choose.
I can do this in csharp code, how can i do it in .aspx page?
Using C# and sql server. I have a gridview which is populated using a sql query. I have 5 columns in the gridview ( projectid,project name,description,date,status). I'm using the Edit/update option that is available in the gridview to edit/update a user selected row. When I use this Text boxes appear. I want to have a drop down list for status instead of a text box with values Started,Inprocess,Complete, Inhold.

On my website, registered users can make a profile about themselves suchas name, Favoirite color, hobbies, etcI have a DataTable called User which hold this information.also there are other datatables for Hobbies and Colors which list all possible options.To let the user update their choices I have a FormView in Edit mode on the aspx page whichis binded to the UserTable with a GetProfileByUserId Method and objectdatasource.
Within the formview, i have added drop down lists that are binded to the hobbies and Colors tables so they can edit their previous selection.On clicking Uodate update formview calls an Update Method that adds new selections to the User databaseNow I have two questionsIs it possible to show in the dropdown list the selected value that the User has already made?If the user only changes hobbies and not colors when they click update will a null value be passed into the data table for colors that replaces their previous selection?

I am stuck at this point "Displaying a dropdown list of Categories with a --None -- Option. I want the gridview control to display 2 dropdown list one in read-only mode and the other in edit mode. When a record is in read-only mode, the dropdownlist's enabled property will be set to false."When it's on a read-only mode, it doesn't display the selected Category. it shows but the "No Category". I'm trying to get a record to show up in a details view as part of a Master Details. I was able to get this to work by setting the visibility to true for the Details View in the Page Load event. I now want the details view to show up when the Select button is clicked in the GridView's template field using the onClick event for the button. I don't seem to be assigning the correct properties to get this to work though. what property I should use with this? I know I have to get it from the GridView and assign it to the details but haven't gotten it to work. this is the GridView:
