Generating An Action URL In JavaScript For .NET MVC

I'm trying to redirect to another page by calling an action in controller with a specific parameter. I'm trying to use this line:
window.open('<%= Url.Action("Report", "Survey", new { id = ' + selectedRow + ' } ) %>');
But I couldn't make it work; it gives the following error:
CS1012: Too many characters in character literal.
Can't I generate the action URL this was on the client side? Or do I have to make an Ajax call by supplying the parameter and get back the needed URL? This doesn't seem right, but I want to if it's the only way.

I have very similar problem as this: Allowing users to download files - ASP.NET , but in my case I am generating xlsx file with ajax, and on ajax-called aspx page I am using:

When this file is generated, control is returned to ajax calling page and from there I wan't to show save file dialog based on this ajax response and allow user to download this generated file. I don't want to save file on disk with ajax called page and then redirect ajax calling page to that file, because of popup blocker in IE. I am using jquery for ajax calls:

I am currently in the process of converting old "Web 1.0" code to meet current standards.
Is there a better way to generate and append a client-side script other than appending a plethora of lines to a StringBuilder and then registering it to the page via ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(Me.GetType(), "startUpScript", strScript)?
Is there any other way (besides putting all of this into a global .js file) that this example can be improved? If including this into the main .js file is the "best practice" alternative, then why?

I have a small form with some static elements that I am able to access with javascript the bring up a popup. 4 textboxes are generated and attached to a updatepanel. I've been trying various methods of validating the contols without generating postback.
I found anytime i registered a javascript to the scriptmanager the page must refresh.
Is there anyway it can be done?

In my current project asp.net MVC 3 (using razor), When I'm making Ajax calls, I have to keep the JS on the view page because I want to use Url.Action to generate the URL , But this means I can't split the js code out into .JS files, Is there a better solution than what I'm currently doing.

After a user creates an account on my website, I want to redirect the user to the home page and display a twitter style message bar on top. This is how I have it:
success: function (response) {
if (response.Success) {
location.href = response.ReturnUrl;
}
ShowMessageBar(response.Message);
},
The message bar does appear but it gets displayed only for a second as it gets canceled by the redirect. What can I do to display the message right after the redirect has completed? Is there a complete event for the location.href?

I have an MVC 1.0 app that makes several AJAX calls from JS files. Originally I was just specifying the relative URL like so:

This works but it feels rather like a hack. Is there any way to do what Url.Action does but in the JS code itself? I've had a bit of a search but I'm having trouble coming up with the correct keywords, or else the info just isn't out there.

i just want to be able to call a javascritp subroutine on the client, after the server has done its thing (when an action completes or control goes to the view, i'd dont mind calling the js from the view either).
for some reason, even vs2010 doesn't let me put breakpoints in <% ... %> tagged areas between <script...> and </script> tagged areas. i for this reason can't figure out whats going on and how it's running things. here is what i've put in my view, and the javascritp should run, but it doesn't....
im just trying to call "RunOnceRoutines;" but it's not getting called!
the 2 questions: how on earth do we call javascript methods from server, and where is all this lovely javascript debugging i've heard about since vs2008? no where to be found!

I have the following javascript. Problem is if I enter one row in the table "ingredients" but I am getting 2 rows in the resulting pass to controller action after seralising into my C# object. But the second object is null? I checked the javascript and the variable "cnt" is 1 not 2. Why would that be?

I am creating one Json array object and trying to pass it in MVC controller action method but i am getting null paramerter; as per my knowledge json only maps .net primitive datatypes.... so it assign null value.
Note: when i have look at request object i found that there are three parameter of created array. But how to get that value as parameter of function?

I'm implement Comet in Asp.net MVC, I used timer to keep Async request in server, Async request will complete when timer elapsed 1 minute and response to client (to avoid 404 error) and then reconnect to Async Controller. I also wanna execute some Synchronous action during Async request was holding, but the problem is: When an Async action was executed and hold by using timer, the Sync Action wasn't called until Async action (comet long-live request) completed. I did test with firefox 3.6 many times, but the result is the same, so strange, Do you know why ? I have a sub some questions : To implement comet, using timer (response after some minutes elapsed) or thread (response after several time sleeping thread) to hold async request, which is better?

I am desiging a master and details page from a search page..user can search for something and I need to display the result in jqgrid if the result has more than 1 row or record.. if the result is just one record then i have to directly send then to details page by skiping grid page... I do have an action method for results page and one more action method for Jqgrid data..i am trying to check the row count for the database result and trying to redirect to details action results..but its not working at all..and showing an empty jqgrid..

Lets say I have a simple controller for ASP.NET MVC I want to test. I want to test that a controller action (Foo, in this case) simply returns a link to another action (Bar, in this case).How would you test TestController.Foo? (either the first or second link)
My implementation has the same link twice. One passes the url throw ViewData[]. This seems more testable to me, as I can check the ViewData collection returned from Foo(). Even this way though, I don't know how to validate the url itself without making dependencies on routing.The controller:

I've been using Html.Action("ActionName", "ControllerName") to invoke child actions across controllers without needing to have the view in ViewsShared. This has been working great for displaying things like session or cookie information.
Instead of just accessing cookies, I would like to pass additional parameters to Html.Action("ActionName", "ControllerName") so the action can execute different code based on the the data passed to the original view.
Should I be using a different method to pass parameters to a child action in a different controller?

I'm trying to add file upload functionality to a page. I've got a form that posts the selected file to a controller with a 'savefile' method. But if I don't add a get version of 'savefile' I'll get a 404 error. Here is the form code which is presented on the Index page:

Intuitively I don't think I should need a GET version of SaveFile but if omit it I get a 404 error when the form posts. Why should I need a GET version of SaveFile when all I want is to post a form and save the file?

I'm looking for a way to find out which action invoked the other: for instance, when redirecting to Action1, I need to know whether it is coming from clicking "next" button at Action0 or clicking "back" button at Action2. This is is to avoid performing Action1 twice (My app is like a wizard, if I click back button at Action2, I don't want to execute Action1 again).
