Get Dynamic Data From Log File To Track The Site Usage?
Oct 27, 2010
How can I track the users who visit the site using Log file. I want to automate the same. We have deployed around 10 websites on the web server which include .net and Flex applications. I want to make the report of site usage. Would it be possible to do the same using log files?

I have built my intranet using MS Visual Web Developer Express 2008. There are several secured areas and my manager asked me to find out if tracking the traffic is possible. Things that I would need to track include:
Which unique user ID's logged in and when? How many times did the same user login? Last login What info was accessed? What page(s) had the most hits? Would I need a database for tracking purposes? Would this info be available with a "dashboard" interface?

When creating dynamic controls based on a data source of arbitrary and changing size, what is the official way to track exactly how many controls need to be rebuilt into the page's control collection after a Postback operation (i.e. on the server side during the ASP.NET page event lifecycle) specifically the point at which dynamic controls are supposed to be rebuilt? Where is the arity stored for retrieval and reconstruction usage?
By "official" I mean the Microsoft way of doing it. There exist hacks like Session storage, etc but I want to know the bonafide or at least Microsoft-recommended way. I've been unable to find a documentation page stating this information. Usually code samples work with a set of dynamic controls of known numbers. It's as if doing otherwise would be tougher.
Update: I'm not inquiring about user controls or static expression of declarative controls, but instead about dynamically injecting controls completely from code-behind, whether they be mine, 3rd-party or built-in ASP.NET controls.

I am having a little difficulty trying to wrap my head around site structures. I have quite a large asp.net site, for which: Admins can see a user list, Each user can have many accounts, and for each account can have many items. I can picture this as a breadcrumb trail of editing a particular item. User List > Mr Bob > Accounts > BOB77 > Items > Item32 > Edit
User List = All the users Mr Bob = A user the administrator has selected from the User List Accounts = A list of the user's accounts 12BOB = The administrator has selected the account named 12BOB Items = A list of the items an account contains Item32 = The item that the administrator selected Edit = The action that the administrator wants to do. I can picture how this would look like if it was using ASP.NET MVC with the URL, but I am unsure how to map this out using Webforms, and in the physical filesystem.
This is what I have thought up about how I am guessing the physical structure would look like. Will this have to use session variables to achieve what I am trying to do?
/Users/User/Edit.aspx <- for editing a user
/Users/User/View.aspx <- for viewing a user
/Users/User/Accounts/Default.aspx <- for viewing all accounts
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/View.aspx <- for viewing an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Edit.aspx <- for editing an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Items/Default.aspx <- for viewing all items in an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Items/Item/Edit.aspx <- for editing an item
Where can I read more about this kind of setup in a web application? Or, can someone point me in the direction of an available project that has this kind of layout?

I've got a dynamic data application that I would like to use several Ajax Controls on (I.E. combo box with auto complete instead of dropdown for foreign key edit fields). I'm running into problems when I try to edit tables. I replaced the regular script manager with the one defined in the AJAX tool kit on the master page (Site.master). The combobox displays, and the table gets updated when you click update/insert, BUT, when the site tries to redirect back to the list view it barfs up a funny URL that the browser can't resolve. EX: www.example.com/TABLENAME/%2fTABLENAME%2fList.aspx when it should be www.example.com/TABLENAME/List.aspx. It works fine with the standard scriptmanager, but the ToolKit's manager doesn't. I'm using Visual Web Developer 2010 express, language is VB, DynamicData application uses LINQ to SQL.

I'm a new in ASP and I have this problem. I do some small websurwey. Random questions per page, random count of questions, 4 types of questions (answears 1 .. 10, Text answears, ... atc.) I created webuserscontrol for each type of questions and these controls I dynamicly add to place holder in some page. There is everything OK, but when I click button on the bottom of the page, I need save the results from client, I need to know which radiobutton is selected and save it to DB and make some operation, and then, after saving, this page is reloaded and show next
Questions. This questions and settings I have in DB. My problem is, how to read data from my UserControls after button click (button on page, not on my controls)? Controls in placeholder are NULL in PostBack and after postback there are new controls. I endclose a small code which is "like" my original code, it is testcode to explaine to you.

I want to put an unique image (1x1) on an e-mail marketing (not spam) of my client. Just like [URL], I'd like to use it to know how many people have actually read the e-mail. I guess I'll have to check how many times this unique image has been accessed, but I can't figure out how to do it.
Is there a way to check how many times an image file was accessed using ASP.NET/C#?

I have this ASP.NET web site that allows users to download program installation packages (just normal files). I want to be able to track when a download is completed (i.e. the file has been fully downloaded to the user's computer) and then invoke a Google Analytics script that reports a completed download as a 'Goal' (obviously, one of my goals is to increase file downloads).
The problem is that I need to support direct file URLs, as opposed to the "redirect page" solution. This is because a lot of traffic comes from software download sites that explicitly demand a direct file URL when submitting a product. Perhaps, they do their own file analysis (i.e. virus checking). But with this set of limitations, a typical scenario is:
The user visits my product listing on a software download site The user clicks the "Download" button on this site The "Download" page is typically a redirect that finally brings the user to my file via the direct URL I've initially submitted, i.e. [URL]
If under these conditions, an exact solution for monitoring is not possible, maybe there exists a workaround? What comes to my mind is temporarily storing the number of performed downloads on the server and then accessing an administrative page that somehow reports this number to Google Analytics and finally sets it back to zero. With this workaround, there is at least no need to try to attach a javascript handler to a non-HTML resource. But even then there are issues:
How to track if a download has completed? How to track user geolocation and browser capabilities to make them further visible in the reports?

I have created a ASP.Net application which basically serves as a content management site. I need to create a Sitemap for our website which should be dynamic. I've tried Telerik's Sitemap control for ASP.net Ajax and found it useful. I want to know which is the best way to create a dynamic site map page in an ASP.net application before i proceed with the telerik control.

I have a simple SiteMapPath in my master page like below.
<asp:SiteMapPath ID="SiteMapPath1" runat="server" SkinID="SiteMap" Visible="true" /><br />
Also I use Web.sitemap and include all static sitemap pages. In my Web.config, I have this:
<siteMap enabled="true"/>
Currently, many pages uses this static site map for many projects and I'm not supposed to update the master page, but I need to have dynamic site map so that I can add query strings for each navigating pages.

I am building a project in asp.net 4.0. My navigation will be database driven where i return a datatable from the db containing all the pages of my site, some will be top level while others will be children and sometimes children of children n-times. Im thinking of going down the nested repeater route and databinding from code behind, dynamically generating repeaters for children, but have read that this is not a best practice and should consider the listview control. Im wanting to build a list of links using an unordered list.

I have a member class that returned IQueryable from a data context
public static IQueryable<TB_Country> GetCountriesQ()
{
IQueryable<TB_Country> country;
Bn_Master_DataDataContext db = new Bn_Master_DataDataContext();
country = db.TB_Countries
.OrderBy(o => o.CountryName);
return country;
}
As you can see I don't delete the data context after usage. Because if I delete it, the code that call this method cannot use the IQueryable (perhaps because of deferred execution?). How to force immediate execution to this method? So I can dispose the data context..

I've been using a repeater to build a website's site map page by binding to the web.sitemap file. For example, to display 2 levels of links:
[Code]....
So far, everything works well. However, in some cases, I do not want to display certain pages in the site map. I've added a custom attribute to each node (nodisplay= 'true').How can i check for this attibute, and avoid it from being displayed by in the repeater.

I'm currently writing a web app in ASP.NET MVC 1.0 (although I do have MVC 2.0 installed on my PC, so I'm not exactly restricted to 1.0) -- I've started with the standard MVC project which has your basic "Welcome to ASP.NET MVC" and shows both the [Home] tab and [About] tab in the upper-right corner. Pretty standard, right? I've added 4 new Controller classes, let's call them "Astronomer", "Biologist", "Chemist", and "Physicist". Attached to each new controller class is the [Authorize] attribute. For example, for the BiologistController.cs
[Authorize(Roles = "Biologist,Admin")]
public class BiologistController : Controller
{
public ActionResult Index() { return View(); }
}
These [Authorize] tags naturally limit which user can access different controllers depending on Roles, but I want to dynamically build a Menu at the top of my website in the Site.Master Page based on the Roles the user is a part of. So for example, if "JoeUser" was a member of Roles "Astronomer" and "Physicist", the navigation menu would say:
[Home] [Astronomer] [Physicist]
[About]
And naturally, it would not list links to "Biologist" or "Chemist" controller Index page. Or if "JohnAdmin" was a member of Role "Admin", links to all 4 controllers would show up in the navigation bar. Ok, you prolly get the idea... Now for the real question... Starting with the answer from this StackOverflow topic about Dynamic Menu building in ASP.NET, I'm trying to understand how I would fully implement this. (I'm a newbie and need a little more guidance, so please bare with me.) The answer proposes Extending the Controller class (call it "ExtController") and then have each new WhateverController inherit from ExtController.
My conclusion is that I would need to use Reflection in this ExtController Constructor to determine which Classes and Methods have [Authorize] attributes attached to them to determine the Roles. Then using a Static Dictionary, store the Roles and Controllers/Methods in key-value pairs. I imagine it something like this:
public class ExtController : Controller
{
protected static Dictionary<Type,List<string>> ControllerRolesDictionary;
protected override void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext filterContext)
{
// build list of menu items based on user's permissions, and add it to ViewData
IEnumerable<MenuItem> menu = BuildMenu();
ViewData["Menu"] = menu;
}
private IEnumerable<MenuItem> BuildMenu()
{
// Code to build a menu
SomeRoleProvider rp = new SomeRoleProvider();
foreach (var role in rp.GetRolesForUser(HttpContext.User.Identity.Name))
{
}
}
public ExtController()
{
// Use this.GetType() to determine if this Controller is already in the Dictionary
if (!ControllerRolesDictionary.ContainsKey(this.GetType()))
{
// If not, use Reflection to add List of Roles to Dictionary
// associating with Controller
}
}
}
Is this doable? If so, how do I perform Reflection in the ExtController constructor to discover the [Authorize] attribute and related Roles (if any) ALSO! Feel free to go out-of-scope on this question and suggest an alternate way of solving this "Dynamic Site.Master Menu based on Roles" problem. I'm the first to admit that this may not be the best approach.
