How To Bind Post Data With A Model That Contains Multiple Models
Nov 4, 2010
I have a parent View that uses a few partial views. Each partial view has its own custom model. The parent View is a model containing each of the partial view's model. In other words this parent View model is NOT flat.
How do i get POST data to bind with the parent's model object? Do i have to write a custom model binder?
Update I'm not binding to a collection of objects of the same type (ie: a collection of uploaded files). I'm binding to object that contains multiple of objects. For example:

i have a text box that i bind to my model data and it works fine. however when i submit my form in some cases i want to change the value that in the text box so some value i pull from the db. when i do this, it only works if the form was not submitted. is there something i am not aware of when it comes to rebinding a text box from the model in cases when the form was submited, instead of reloading the same value that the user entered into the text box?

I've a product model that contains a list of description models. Every description model contains some string values because every product can have a description for every language. Here it is a semplified version of my models:
[Code]....
So my view to insert a new product is like this:
[Code]....
And my PartialProductDescription view is like this:
[Code]....
Now, the views are perfect. With some Jquery UI I have a form with all the product properties and a tab panel with the language descriptions.
Unfortunatelly my POST action with the firm public ActionResult ProductNew(ProductModel model) has all the model property InternationalDescriptions that contain 2 empty models. So if I write something in the form in the first description textarea, model.InternationalDescrtiptions[0].Description is always empty.
So, how I can tell to MVC to take description textarea values and put them in the model?

I am trying to load a usercontrol with its own model, how does this work in practice? What I want really is to click on a button in a View which opens up a UserControl in the center of the page but there will be no sending my model to it because the model used on the page does not contain what I want it to display in the control (More detailed, the page is a memberpage and the uc is an admin page for approving images sent by other members). I've messed around with Inheritance but not really gotten any good results from that perhaps im doing it wrong). This is how it looks today:
The Model
[Code]....
The Controller
[Code]....
The Link
[Code]....
The UserControl
[Code]....
The Error
What can I do differently to make this thing work properly?

I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC 2 project with some business entities that have metadata dataannotations attributes applied to them (Validation attributes, Display attributes, etc.).
Something like:
[Code]....
Using the metadata from different views is no problem, as long as I am using my business entities as viewmodels or as part of a viewmodel like this:
[Code]....
However, sometimes I need to code a view for editing some, but not all fields of an entity. For those fields I want to reuse the metadata already specified in my user entity. The other fields should be ignored. I'm talking about custom view models like this:
[Code]....
That's where I am running into problems. The custom view model above leads to an exception when the view is generated, because it has no password property.
The associated metadata type for type 'Zeiterfassung.Models.ViewModels.Users.UserNameViewModel+UserModel' contains the following unknown properties or fields: Password. make sure that the names of these members match the names of the properties on the main type.
Also, even if this exception did not occur, I expect to get into even more trouble with model validation on form submit because Password is marked as required in my business entity.
I can think of several workarounds, but none seem really ideal. In any case I can't change the database layout so that the password field would be in a separate entity in my example above.
How would you handle this scenario?

(Using SQL Server 2008 and ASP.NET MVC2)I have a simple business table and a category table. I have a 3rd table to map business to category, a many-to-many relationship. the Map table contains a BusinessID and CategoryID. I'm lost as to how I can load the categories into my Business View Model using the entities model.Without incorporating categories, my code looks like this:
[Code]....
with Business View Model defined as:
[Code]....
but if i want to populate the Categories with the mapped categories, how would one do that?

quick question: I have a view on my HomeController which is used to create a new 'model'. This view posts to a different controller to keep things tidy. The problem I am having is when I enter invalid details into the form, the rules I specified never seem to make it back to the original view and thus my validation messages or summary never get populated. Is there a way around this because I am using a view model with two IEnumerable lists in it.

I am trying to make a post that should use the Default Model Binder functionality in ASP.NET MVC 2 but unfortunately I can't get through. When I click on the checkout button I populate a form dinamically using jQuery code and then submit this form to the server. This is the form that get submitted
<form action="/x/Order/Checkout" id="cartForm" method="post">
<input name="__RequestVerificationToken" type="hidden" value="UDjN9RdWheKyWK5Q71MvXAbbDNel6buJd5Pamp/jx39InuyYIQVptcEubIA2W8DMUzWwnZjSGkLspkmDPbsIxy8EVuLvfCSZJJnl/NrooreouptwM/PaBEz2v6ZjO3I26IKRGZPqLxGGfITYqlf8Ow==">
<input id="CustomerID" name="CustomerID" type="hidden" value="1">
<input id="FirmID" name="FirmID" type="hidden" value="2">
<input type="hidden" name="CartItems[0].ServiceTypeID" value="1">
<input type="hidden" name="CartItems[0].Quantity" value="1">
<input type="hidden" name="CartItems[1].ServiceTypeID" value="2">
<input type="hidden" name="CartItems[1].Quantity" value="1">
</form>
This is the jQuery code that handle the submit event for the form
$("#cartForm").submit(function (event) {
event.preventDefault(); var form = $("#cartForm");
var panel = form.parent(); panel.parent().block();
$.ajax({ type: "post", dataType: "html",
url: '<%: Url.Content("~/Order/Checkout") %>',
async: false, data: form.serialize(),
success: function (response, status, xml) { panel.parent().unblock(); },
error: function (response) { panel.parent().unblock(); } }); });
This is the controller action that should be get called
[HttpPost]
[ValidateAntiForgeryToken]
public virtual ActionResult Checkout( CartModel cart ) {
} And finally this is the CartModel class involved
public class CartModel : BaseModel{
public int CustomerID { get; set; }
public int FirmID { get; set; }
public List<CartItemModel> CartItems { get; set; }
public CartModel() { CartItems = new List<CartItemModel>();
} } public class CartItemModel : BaseModel
{ public int ServiceTypeID { get; set; }
public int Quantity { get; set; } }
But the default Model Binder does not bind the web form data to a CartModel class. Using Fiddler I have been able to see that the data sent to the server is correct as you can see from the following snapshot.

I have recently started learning ASP.NET with MVC 2 Framework, I am facing difficulties in the following scenarios.In my MVC application I want to retain partial information in Model over post backs.Following is my scenario,
1. I initiate "Edit" of main record by clicking date hyperlink from left navigation.
2. Amend some data.
3. Save the record.
4. "Edit" sub record of the saved record by clicking another hyperlink from bottom left navigation panel.
The page is divided in to 6 tabs, the first 5 tabs shows the data for the main record and the 6th tab shows data of sub record. Wehn we "Edit@ sub record the previous 5 tabs doesn't have any changes noted, that means there is no harm in keeping their details intact in the main model. So is there a way to access model in the controller on hyper link click action so that I can only load the data for the clicked sub record (I am asking this, because the hyperlink click uses HTTP GET method so no model parameter passed in action method). If no, then how do I retain partial values in the Model over post backs?
Note that each tab data have been kept in individual models, and a main model has a collection member to hold all these individual models together.I thought as the model is binded with the view, it is too binded with controller. But it is allowing easily to access model in variable "Model" for the view but not for the controller.

I am looking here to find a quick and easy way to bind a list of checkbox list items when the postback occurs in the model. Apparently the common way to do it now seems to do it like this form.GetValues("checkboxList")[0].Contains("true"); It seems painfull and not exactly safe. Is there a way to bind a list of checkbox (that are created with or without an helper in the view) or even an array of data for that matters during the UpdateModel(myViewModel, form.ToValueProvider()); phase which would populate an IList<string> or string[] inside of the model ?

I am not able to find the projects related to working with excel sheets by using ClosedXML to refer. I have an excel book which contains two sheets.
In sheet 01: In column A: In B: In C:
Student name01 Student's phone number blabla
Student name02 Student's phone number blabla
Student name03 Student's phone number blabla
In sheet 02: In column A: In B: In C:
course name01 computerscience blabla
course name02 dhfsthshbstgs blabla
course name03 garsfghsefrgs blabla
now, I would like to see in two comboboxes (all the words/text presented in the column A) from two sheets, the student name and course name and then I want select any student name and course name of my choice. Afterwards, when I click on a button, my program should display the students phone number and the course name (from column B from both sheets) and related things present in the Column C D E.. of the selected things in combobox in a label or a in a textbox.
PS: I solved the following problem: I can select student name in one combobox and print the the corresponding data from the only one column B (but I worked only with one sheet). It is bit complicated for me to continue with two sheets.

public virtual int MemberId { get; set; }
public virtual string Username { get; set; }
public virtual bool IsActive { get; set; }
public virtual bool IsSame { get; set; }

I have two AccessDataSources each returning one row.
I want to use the data in each row to populate content on my page, so I figured I would use a [Code].... or [Code].....
However, I would not necessarily want the labels bound to a particular DataSource placed together.
For example, I might want labels from the following columns in order [Code]....
:
[Code]....
Note: No language preference (C#/VB).

I've got a view model that has some text properties. And I use Html.DisplayFor to display them on the screen. But those text data won't be post back, so in the case of failed validation, the returned view won't have those data. How do I handle this kind of situation?

I'm trying to learn the ropes of ASP.NET MVC and so far so good. One thing which I haven't seen addressed yet is the 'right' or most elegant way to pass multiple data models to a view. To help put the question in context, take this example: Say I was making a blog. When I log in I want the home screen to display a list of all new unapproved comments, as well as a list of recently registered users, and a list of the most recently submitted blog posts.
Most discussions I've seen suggest strongly-typing the view page so it can be called with something like "return View(RecentComments)" and iterate through the comments in the view, or to cast the data model like "var NewUsers = (MembershipUserCollection) ViewData.Model". What I'm ideally after is the 'right', or at least a 'right-enough', way of passing multiple models while still maintaining appropriate logic separation.

<p>Hi</p> <p>I'm a newbie in MVC but a veteran web forms developer. I really like the idea of strongly typed views but what if I have multiple objects to pass to my razor view. Would I then NOT use strongly typed views and just use the ViewBag?</p>

So far I've seen demos of MVC that have simple pages, one for login, one for register, one for listing a table. In order to understand better the transition for WebForms developers into MVC patterns, I would like to understand how can I put together multiple CONTROLS (like the one provided by the default MVC project that VS2010 creates for us ...and make it work. OK so as an example, imagine we want to change the LogonUserControl.ascx to allow us to login (so to show UserName and Password textboxes and Logon button) from the Home Page.
1) We update the Control as follow:
2) We update the HomeController.cs file to handle the Logon Button Post event as follow:
We needed to move some code from AccountController to HomeController in order to get the control to work under the Index view. So ...with little luck it seems to work! Now the problem happens when you navigate to the Register view, considering that now we are not any longer on the HomeController "domain" but we are under AccountController. Register page shows perfectly and since the LogOnUserControl.ascx belongs to the MasterPage, it shows too. Since we are not logged yet, it will be displaying the UserName and Password textboxes. But we don't really care about that, because we are on the Register view and after populating the Register values, we click on the Register button. This is the error I get:
>>> To me that I come from the WebForms world, it seems like even if the event fired was the Register button (therefore under the AccountController domain), there is a kind of hidden OnInit event fired for any control on that view, in this case the Logon event. I'm sure this is NOT the case but the real question is... if we are allowed to have only one Controller x view, how can we put together controls that come from different "controller domains" and display them inside a single view?
Could I develop an eCommerce site using MVC that has the home page displaying different controls like [Most Purchased Product, Product of the Month, Special Promotions, Messages Inbox, Company Events ... and each control has it's own button to click and do something (so a proper POST request)] on the home page, unless I only have ONE single Controller which i'm not even sure if it will work or if it would make sense ....since MVC is all about separation of responsibilities.
