I have requirement where I need to allow users to upload a Word document with place holders for certain fields which can be found in the database. This will be their template. For example the place holders might be prepended with @@ or something. For example
Dear @@Title @@Lastname
They then can grab a record and hit export to Word document. This will then let them choose the template. They can select the template and then click continue. I will then get the template and replace the @@Title with the title field in the database for the selected record. I am not sure where to start or what components I need to do this.
From my initial investigation it seems that I can do this with the new open XML standard for Office 2007. So perhaps I should read in the template and save all the contents to a db table somewhere. Then when the use wants to export I get the contents again and then do a search and replace for the @@ placeholders and link them properly. Then save the document to the output stream again which will then bring up the save dialog on their browser.
I am using ASP.Net MVC and am in a hosted environment. I was also maybe contemplating dynamically creating a new View type and dynamically creating new views when the user uploads a template. Not sure that this approach will work though.

Refering to your article on exporting the gridview to Word/Excel/PDF/CSV, I modified to code to populate the GV dynamically coz they have different data and different columns as per the selection. But after the data population, when I try to export the data it does not export any data instead for eg. in Word it just export <div> </div>. The code is pasted below.
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim dt As DataTable = GetData()
Dim dcol As DataColumn
Dim bfields As BoundField
GridView1.Columns.Clear()
[code]...

What is the best way to do this. I dont have access to the database since it is firewalled. It needs to be done throught the web interface. I can generate a csv file and plug it into the word document, but it seems cumbersome to me. Is there any better way to do this?

I am in need of making a web application that has the ability to load word documents from sql server(onto the web page), edit them, then save them back to the database. I've read a couple of articles that show that you can integrate MS Word into .NET, so it looks like it is possible. My question is whether or not there are major security holes in doing so. Since I want to be able to save my changes back into the database, I am a little hesitant on what certain people might try to exploit if I do this.

I have two list box in which i have name of files. Once i click Copy button the files are copied from source location which are in one path to destination location. After that i am clearing the listbox. Before moving i am checking some validations like filename, file content.
If all validations are sucsess the files will be moved.
If there are any failure in validation for some files, only files which are validated successfully are copied, the error files are not copied. Here i need to popup a word document which will contain the file names, validation failure message.
This is fine i am getting it.
After poping up the word doc i need to do Response.Flush();
So due to this it is not clearing the Listbox. How can i clear the listbox

I have been using using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word in my webserver (yes, i know it is not recommended). When I ran it on my machine, it runs fine, but when running on the server I get a timeout on the following line:Documents.Open //when trying to open the file.Is there something I'm missing? Is there a better way to edit a Word document within web servers/websites? (I can't create a new one using string builder or outputting into file; I need to edit an existing one that sits on the server.)

So I have written as part of an application some code that on my clients website pulls some information from SQL server and uses it to create a new file using a Word with bookmarks as a template. It works fine on my development machine, but not on my production server with the error: "Cannot create ActiveX component.: Word.Application". Now I have been approaching this as if it is an issue with Office, but it occurred to me that this might be another issue. Maybe some security issue with ASP.NET? My original thought was it was some kind of compatibly problem as I had Office 2007 on my machine and 2010 on the server.
Code:
Protected Sub btnCreate_Click(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCreate.Click
Dim objWord As Object
Dim objDoc As Object
Dim strContractFile As String = "~Documents" & txtContractFile.Text
Dim strContractFilePath As String = Server.MapPath(strContractFile)
[Code] .....

My users have "demanded" to have an export function to their gridviews, and since they're running from usercontrols there's no way to modify the response stream. My workaround is to create an aspx to run in a hidden iframe. To do that, and to make it modular, I'm trying to dynamically create everything from the querystring. This *seems* to work just fine until I bind my sqldatasource to the dummy gridview. I then get "Procedure or function 'xxx' expects parameter '@NumberResults', which was not supplied."

I have created button 2 below:
<input id="Button1" type="button" value="Stop"
onclick="alert('hello world');"/>
<input id="Button2" type="button" value="button" OnClik="alert('hello world');"/>
using a litteral tag on page load like this:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Literal1.Text = "<input id="Button2" type="button" value="button" OnClik="alert('hello world');"/>";
}
Incredibly when testing in browser, click on button 1 works, not click on button 2 whereas the codes are the same !

I'm hoping this is an easy one...I'm using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word to convert uploaded word documents into previewable html files. I haven't implemented it fully, but I've played around with it enough that I think I have a plan that will work... My question revolves around
[Code]....
I'm not in love with the idea of opening word and closing it everytime there's an upload (which I hope is a lot of the time) I'd like to make this a shared object that loads at application start. I have 2 questions
that go along with this. 1. I imagine that winword could lock up and that would be a problem, right? 2. to save a document I use wordapp.ActiveDocument, this could have an issue as a shared object, right? I think I'm talking myself right out of this...

I have a word document which opens in a web browser using ASP.NET 2.0 this is the code:
[Code]....
THIS WORKS, PROMPTING THE USER WITH "OPEN" "SAVE" "CANCEL" OR SOME USERS WITH "SAVE" "CANCEL" DEPENDING ON USER INTERNET SECURITY SETTING. BUT FOR SECURITY ISSUES, MY BOSS WANT THIS WORD DOCUMENT TO BE OPENED IN WORD PROGRAM. (MICROSOFT WORD 93,97 ETC) IS THIS POSSIBLE....? OFCOURSE SAVING THE FILE IS OKAY, JUST OPENING THE DOCUMENT SHOULD BE NOT BROWSER.
