Security :: Lock Down Certain Sitemap Menu Items Based On The Users Role ?

Jan 21, 2010

My web app has 3roles, I need to lock down certain sitemap menu items based on the users role and what I'm using isn't working.

my roles are Supervisor, manager, and User.

I only want those roles to see those menu options, I do not want someone with a user role to see those options at all. Currently if I log into my site with a user role, I'm seeing everything on the menu (via the sitemap).

VS 2008 - Restricting Access To Web Pages (on Intranet Site) Based On Role Based Authorization

Jul 12, 2011

I have a simple intranet site. It has a role based authorization in the web.config file.

Any user's in a specific role called as "Apr-Sales-Writers" will be authorized to use those pages. If not, they will not be authorized. So far so good. Works fine. But we added additional functionality where a new active directory group (means new role) has to be added and user's belonging to this new AD group should be given access to only specific .aspx pages on the intranet site. I am using a web.sitemap and it looks like this.

If the user's belong to say AD group "Apr-Sales-Writers", they should access only default.aspx and salesData.aspx pages. User's belonging to new AD group (which I did not include in the web.config file below), should have access to other .aspx pages.

[CODE]<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<siteMap xmlns="" >
<siteMapNode url="default.aspx" title="Home" description="Home">
<siteMapNode title="sales Data" description="sales Data">
<siteMapNode url="salesData.aspx" title="sales Data" description="sales Data" />

[Code] ....

Security :: Users With More Than One Role?

Mar 4, 2010

I have an application that uses Forms Authentication and Role Management. I have a few users with more than one role associated to the user. Based on certain roles, the navigation menu displays certain menu options.

Right now, if the user has more than one role, the menu shows the items that are in both roles instead of the items that are in the particular role that the user is logged into or currently set to.

I'm creating an Authentication Ticket to log the user in and I'm passing the active user role as follows:

authenticationTicket = New FormsAuthenticationTicket(1, UserName, DateTime.Now, DateTime.Now.AddMinutes(20), False, UserRole)

Is there anyway to set the user to one particular role and have the application see the user in this single role instead of reading all the roles that the user is in?

Security :: Claims Based Authorization VS Role Permission Based Authorization?

Apr 26, 2010

Our team has recently implemented a role permission based authorization so that we can have granular control. This is similar to what Rockford Lhotka suggests here I have also read about the Claims based authorization which to me looks very similar to what we have. Can some one put in simple terms what the advantages of claims based authorization are.

Bind A Users Role To Dropdown?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm trying to bind a selected user's role to a dropdown-list. The purpose of this is to be able to change said user's role.

I'm attempting this inside a formview hooked up to a linqdatasource which contains a row from the aspnet_User table.

The dropdown list is hooked up to a linqdatasource of all the roles in the aspnet_Roles table (with DataValueField="RoleID", DataTextField="RoleName").

I figured it would be possible with something like:

SelectedValue='<%# Bind("aspnet_UsersInRole[0].aspnet_Role.RoleID") %>'

But this throws a parser exception, about the bind call not being correctly formatted.

The roles are there, they show up when I remove the "SelectedValue"

How To Display A Gridview Column Only To Users In A Certain Role

Dec 2, 2010

I have an page with a gridview. I would like to make it so that certain columns in the gridview are displayed only if the user is in a certain role, that is, if HttpContext.Current.User.IsInRole(XXX) returns true.

What is the easiest way to do this?

I would prefer a solution where I can easily put this in my ASP code and not in the page code-behind.

How can i modify the validate user method to route users to one URL and admin to another?

Can i put in a If statement to say If role = admin go here after a user has been validated?

C# - Get List Of Users Belonging To A Role Using Authorization Manager

Apr 8, 2010

Using ASP.NET (C#) I have set up Authorization Manager to allow me to handle roles on a website. Added users to roles is simple Roles.AddUserToRole("DOMAIN\UserName", "role"). However I want to list the users belonging to a role, but since they are stored as SID's, displaying them would not be that helpful. To get the users, I am thinking XML would have to be used, although is it possible to use COM Interop to both do that and get the user name? Either way, how can I get the users belonging to a role?

The table to manage roles would basically be like this:

Role User
---- ----
admin DOMAINUserName [delete]
DOMAINUserName2 [delete]
[add user text box]
news DOMAINUserName3 [delete]
[add user text box]

I've been reading about asp web administration tool. I read about creating roles and stuff and forcing a controller to use authentication in order to be viewed. But I want Peter to create new users on his View (I'm using MVC). Can anyone point me in the direction of how to do this.

I want peter to see on his page, like "Create user" and this user will be created as a LimitedAdministrator.

Architecture :: To Create A Function To Send An Email To All Users In A Particular Role?

Jan 20, 2011

I'm comfortable sending emails to individuals in ASP.NET, but recently have needed to create a function to send an email to all users in a particular role.

A couple of problems I'm having are:

My shared hosting allows 200 emails per hour. Although not an issue at the moment it could be very soon, so how can I 'throttle' my application to not send out more emails then I'm allowed to?

If want to loop through the emails and send the messages in the background of my app. Rather than have a situation where logging off or closing the browser stops the process. point me in the direction of some articles about this type of thing, my searching so far hasn't given me great results.

VS 2008 Creating Role Based Authorization?

Feb 9, 2011

I have seen articles on Role Based Authorization in MS-Sql but i did not find any article in, i am acheived this concept using session user name i am enabling certain parts of website to group A and certain parts of site to Group B but when i have more groups i cannot use this method.

Myrequirement is:

In Web applications, typically there exist certain parts of the site that only certain folks, or groups of persons can access. For example, imagine Web site used to administer the content on a company's public Internet Web site, where the public Web site lists products sold by the company. From the administrative site, all company employees might be able to make minor changes to the products' descriptions, quantity, and other such non-essential information. However, perhaps only a subset of trusted employees might be able to change the products' prices. And even a smaller subset of employees would be able to add new products or delete existing products from the database I would be delighted if any one provide the solution
