Maintain User Entered Text In TextBox
Feb 15, 2011I have an ASP.Net UpdatePanel that updates on a timer. Within the UpdatePanel and nested in a GridView, I have a TextBox that the user enters a value in with a submit button. Everything works fine, except if the user does not submit the value before the timed interval, the text is removed from the TextBox. Is there a way to persist the user entry into the TextBox between updates? Is there a better way of doing this?

Mar 26, 2010Currently we are saving files (PDF, DOC) into the database as BLOB fields. I would like to be able to retrieve the raw text of the file to be able to manipulate it for hit-highlighting and other functions.Does anyone know of a simple way to either parse out the files and save the raw text on save, either via SQL or .net code. I have found that Adobe has a filtdump utility that will convert the PDF to text. Filtdump seems to be a command line tool, and i don't see a way to use a file stream. And what would the extractor be for Office documents and other file types?-or-Is there a way to pull out the raw text from the SQL Full text index, without using 3rd party filters?Note i am trying to build a .net & MSSql solution without having to use a third party tool such as Lucene

I populate the ListBox with ListItems and each ListItem's Value property holds the full path to the file. But, I removed all of that and just put txtLog.Text = "test" inside of the "is selected" block.
Prevent IE File Download Warning Or Maintain State After Warning?
Mar 15, 2011I have an application whereby a user browses to an Ajax enabled page, sets up some filters, and then clicks on download report. When the user clicks on this button, they are redirected to a Download.aspx page, which builds up the report and appends it to the response as binary (the file may either be zip/pdf or excel). The issue I am having is that everytime the user goes to the page and hits the download button the warning message from IE pops up "To help protect your security internet explorer has blocked this site from download files to your computer". This is not a huge issue, but the problem is that when the user clicks this warning to accept the file, it reloads the page, and all my filters are lost, so the user has to set up all the filters to filter out the data they dont want and then re-download the file.
The interesting thing is that I thought I could track the filters using session variables, so that when the page reloads after accepting the warning message it could be restored, but IE for some reason is not loading the page in the way it should, and so the Page_Load method is never fired when IE reloads it after the user accepting the warning, so I cannot restore the filter settings on the page because I have no event to do it from!
I have searched and searched for a solution.. I have tried changing the mime headers - I am using content-disposition tag set to "attachment; filename=report.zip", I have tried changing the mime type descriptions to different things to see if I can avoid the warning but to no avail. I have tried using an iframe but couldnt quite get it to do what I want it to do, the page was still being refreshed..
State Management :: Serializing To File System To Maintain State?
Oct 25, 2010I have a system that has several large objects that need to be built and populated each and every time, and these objects may be accessed quite often as well. As a strategy, caching would not be that good for me because there are potentially thousands of these objects which are fairly large. So I propose to serialize the objects to the file system and then deserialize it when I need those objects again. I have several classes that need this serialization functionality.
These objects change as well, so on the next access I check if there were any changes and then I grab only the changes and edit the object, and then reserialize the object.
My question is what is the best way to do this, since I have several classes ..

Jul 8, 2010I have an application I am trying to write that generates a text file conforming to a file specification, and the file could contain thousands of lines. This part is easy. The more challenging part for me is the user interface. It needs to be a web interface with various options to affect what data gets on the file; this part is no problem. The process for generating the file, though, could take a little time depending on the amount of data , and I would think the web page would time out.
What options do I have for the UI? Could I create some sort of service that the page calls and runs in the background? When the process errors or is finished, I'm thinking there could be an email sent out, or even messages displayed on the page.
Intermittent Bug - IE6 Showing File As Text In Browser Rather Than As File Download
Dec 30, 2010In an ASP.NET WebForms 2.0 site we are encountering an intermittent bug in IE6 whereby a file download attempt results in the contents of the being shown directly in the browser as text, rather than the file save dialog being displayed. Our application allows the user to download both PDF and CSV files. The code we're using is:
