How To Use Nant And MSBuild To Build Debug Deployment

Jun 17, 2010

I have a Nant build script which referrences 30 other build scripts.

Each build script referrences a visual studio solution using MSBuild.

Each solution has 3 to 5 projects in.

Some projects are Class Librarys and some are Web Apllications.

The projects reference other projects both in their solution and out of their solution, so the projects do not use project references, they reference the the Release DLLs in the Bin folders of the other projects.

To use the software, I need to publish all the solutions together.

Which means I cannot do a deployment which is in debug mode.

Which means I cannot the step into and debug the code.

I would like to run the build script to get a deployment of the software which I can debug.

Nant Aspnet_compiler.exe Release Build - How To Make It

Mar 11, 2011

I have the following nant task:

[code]

this is used when loading certain assets (swf files) by being appended as a querystring parameter and ensures that when debugging a cached version isn't received but is manageable once released.

However, after what I believed should be compiling a relase build, the version is still being set as a Guid indicating I'm not achieving a release build yet. I've checked the web.config and the value of debug is changed to false so I'm assuming I'm missing some setting in the aspnet_compiler.exe arguments, but I cant find anything which indicates such in the documentation.

Visual Studio :: Unable To Use Web Deployment MSBuild V10 With AspNetMerge .NET 4

Jul 8, 2010

I am using Web Deployment v10.0 RTW and .NET Framework version 4.0 MSBuild.

There were some problems with incorrect settings and resulting in errors. I had to pass in my own values in order to continue to the next step:

[Code]....

With the above setting, it builds in .NET 4.0 instead of 2.0, but I am having trouble with AspNetMerge:

[Code]....

I was able to solve the above error by changing this inMSBuildMicrosoftWebDeploymentv10.0Microsoft.WebDeployment.targets:

[Code]....

But soon came to another error:

[Code]....

So I changed some more to make it work:

[Code]....

But again hit with another error but this one I can't solve:

(AspNetMerge target) ->

aspnet_merge : error 1008: The PrecompiledApp.config file is missing. Make sure the application has been precompiled with the Aspnet_compiler tool.

MSBuild Failing To Build Referenced Projects When Upgrading To VS2010?

Dec 8, 2010

I have recently upgraded my .Net 3.5 solution containing some C# code projects and a ASP.net web site project to VS2010 (from VS2008). It is building and running fine inside VS, but I get some problems when trying to build it on my server with MSBuild 4.0 via TeamCity. It seems like the projects that are referenced from the web site are not built. This was all working fine before I upgraded to VS2010, MSbuild 4.0 and Windows SDK 7.1.

Inside the msbuild script that I use to build from teamcity I have defined project references for the web site like this:

[code]...

When I try to run the build script I get an error message saying that it could not find the dll file when trying to copy it from the bin folder of the referenced project into the bin folder of the web site. This is happening because the referenced projects are in fact never built at all (No bin folder exists in the project dir).

I am not very experienced with MSbuild, so I may have overlooked some important stuff. Is it not so that MSbuild will automatically try to build the referenced projects if no project output is existing?

Configuration :: Include IIS Settings From IIS Manager Breaks Deployment Package Build?

Jul 26, 2010

Im trying to build a deployment package out of VS2010 against a web project and want to include all IIS settings as configured in IIS Manager. However when i enable this i get the following error message

Object of type 'manifest' and path

[code]...

Now this error makes very little sense as the specified application does exist in Default Web Site. I've checked the spelling. I've tried having ISV as a virtual directory and as an Application and tried with and without the ISV folder.

On the Web page i hae the Project URL set to [URL] On the Package/Publish tab IIS web site name is set to "Default Web Site/ISV/Web.Crm.Framework/"

Bing/Google search turn up very little on this and the documentation is not really detailed enough.

Can Specify If Aspnet_compiler.exe Creates A Debug Or Release Build

Apr 16, 2010

I wish to compile my asp.net MVC application using aspnet_compiler.exe from the comandline to speed up cold startup.

I'm wondering how it determines if it should do a release or debug build. Is it always release? Does it depend on what the web.config file says when you run aspnet_compiler.exe?

What happens to an application that's been compiled w/ aspnet_compiler.exe if someone changed the debug attribute in the web.config file after it has been published?

Visual Studio :: Web.config Transformations On Build/debug

Mar 3, 2010

I really like the new transformation feature for the web.config. It seems to work when I do "Build deployment package" but not when I just want to locally start the debugging using the green arrow. It just uses the web.config without processing theWeb.Debug.config. I can prove that because in web.config I have debug="false" with a transformation in Web.Debug.config so that it gets true but everytime VS asks if it should modify the web.config to enable debugging which it should've done automatically with the following transformation:

[Code]....

Am I missing something here? I used to work with NAnt to modify/create the web.config as a pre-build event but I thought that I wouldn't need it anymore. Am I wrong? The project is a freshly created asp.net mvc 2 web application.

Visual Studio :: Unable To Understand The "build Deployment Package" In VS 2010

Jul 22, 2010

I don't understand how to use this feature called "Build deployment package" in VS 2010. I go to my properties and go to package/publish web and setup it up. I click "Create deployment package as zip"

I then build the deployment package and get a zip file.

When I look into and start drilling down in the folders I find I get a path like this

[Code]....

I don't understand why it makes all these folders and on top of it why is it my path to where my soultion sits. I don't like the fact that now everyone can look in the zip and see my accoutn name, where the file was sitting, that I am using subversion.

Then it makes it so confusing to when a error happens. I deployed it on my IIS windows 2008 server and ran it and I had a error show up. It pointed to the file where the error occured and the path was point to my desktop.For the longest time I could not understand why it was pointing to my windows 7 machine desktop when it was running on a windows 2008 server located in a different country.

It was not until I found out with the zip path it made sense. But that is confusing when it is pointing to paths that don't exist on that computer.

How can I change this?

C# - Include References To Web Services In NANT Or Csc.exe?

Nov 23, 2010

Im trying to automate our build process. To do this i need to compile the app_code in a asp.Net website to a dll so i can run NUnit test against the code. Before you suggest that i just use a class library, i will say that i agree with you, my superiors however, take a different view and have vetoed the use of dlls in our web sites.

The problem i have is that the app_code classes reference web services. How do i get the csc task to include these when compiling the code into a class library? The nant target i have so far is:

<target name="Compile">
<property name="nant.settings.currentframework" value="net-3.5" />
<csc target="library" output="DocSysAppCode.dll" debug="true">
<sources>
<include name="D:InetpubDocSysApp_CodeCommon*.cs" />
<include name="D:InetpubDocSysApp_CodeDocSysSiteLegislation.generated.cs" />
</sources>
<resources>
<include name="D:DocSysQueueWeb ReferencesWS_DocSys*.*" />
<include name="D:DocSysQueueapp.config" />
</resources>
</csc>
</target>

Compile A MVC Project Using MSBuild?

Feb 3, 2010

How do I compile an ASP.Net MVC project using MSBuild? We use a Continuous Integration server to compile and deploy our applications. To keep things simple I created an MVC 1.0 project in VS2008. I immediately created an MSBuild script file to compile it. I did not change any code in the project. The MSBuild script contained the following target.

<AspNetCompiler
VirtualPath="/"
PhysicalPath="C:Developmentmvc1"
TargetPath="c:publishxxx"
Force="true"
Debug="false"
Updateable="true"

The MVC project sln file is contained in the c:developmentmvc1 directory.I am running XP/Pro.I am receiving an error ASPCONFIG: it is an error to use a section registered as allowDefintion='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.

I removed the authenication mode, membership provider, etc. from the web config file until I finally saw a different error message.I am now receiving an error message saying that the file '/views/shared/site.master' does not exist.

Get MSBuild Output From CCNet Api?

Jul 16, 2010

I am building an asp.net shell on top of CCNet 1.5, where I send commands like force build to CCNet through the api. The ThoughtWorks.CruiseControl.Remote namespace has methods to get information from CCNet on the build, like status, elapsed time, etc.I would like to programmatically get the MSBuild task output from the CCNet api, but I haven't seen any methods for this. Is it at all possible? Or do I need to scan output files on disk or something?

After the first tie this happened, I closed down Dreamweaver (CS3) and it opened when I tried to run my VWD project. I reinstalled VWD 2008 express, IIS and disabled Dreamweaver (renamed the exe). Dreamweaver still came up.
