Image Storage And Retrieval In File System?
Jan 11, 2010
What is the best approach to storing images in a file system. Currently I am separating the images by day, month and then year. I am also hashing file name so that no two files will be stored with the same name. Lastly, how would I go about using the image file address in a forum?

In our organization we had to write code to store and retrive documents in many apps. Now I would like to write a service/library that can be used my other devs. Not sure how to start about that? What should be my first step.

Currently, I am storing images and video clips in my database as a varbinary(max).
The problem is that when my front-end goes to retrieve and play the video, it takes an excessive amount of time to download.
For example, I have a video file: test.avi (5mb). If I attempt to read from database and play avi, it takes about 40 seconds. If I attempt to play this test.avi from the filesystem, it takes about 10 seconds to load.
I have investigated compression/decompression, but those seem to be as time-consuming as just loading up the raw data from the database.
Should I scrap storing video clips in the database, and go for a file system approach. I would really like to keep everything clean, secure, and organized. Which is why I am storing images, video clips, etc. in database.

I have been following various guides online and they seem to be great and i learning a great deal and i have my learning set out however i have come across a stumbling block "yet again"
I was following Mikes SQLce image upload guide and I got it, I understood it all "in theory"
[URL]
however what i couldn't figure out is when i want to display that image on a separate page or pull it back into a webgrid it just showed me SystemByte[] and not the image. Or a long string of writing that started -System........
I tried stripping Mikes code thinking well he is pulling the Image from the DB once the postback is done so why cant I do it on another page or in another <Div>. ?
If im not mistake it has somthing to do with this line
Response.BinaryWrite((byte[])file.FileContent);
Here is mmikes code:

I maintain a web application (ASP.NET/IIS7/SQL2K8/Win2K8) that needs to access documents, actually hundreds of thousands of documents, and growing. Currently, they are all on a Windows 2K8 Server fileshare, being accessed by UNC path (SMB). The files are in a single flat directory and I'm trying to plan how to best improve this solution. I don't want to use the SQL Filestream attribute as it would be significant effort to migrate it all into that, and would really lock in to SQL Server. I also need to find a way to replicate the data for disaster recovery, so perhaps a solution can help with that too. Options could be: Segment files into multiple directories? application would add metadata for which directory it's on (or segment by other means) Segment files into separate servers? (virtualize)Backup becomes more complicated. Application would add metadata for which server it's on
NAS Storage
SAN Storage
Put a service (WCF) in front of the files and have the app talk to the service bonus of being reusable across many applications Assuming I'm going to store on filesystem and not in database (I've read those disccusions here), which would be a more scalable solution?

I have a web site that you can upload images, the image path is saved in the ImgPath field in the data database and retrieves the image and displays it in the grid view. I want to be able to delete the image from a folder within my project when I delete the record. I'm trying to delete it from the Detailsview_ItemDeleting event.

Currently I am looking to move my websites images to a storage service. I have two websites developed in PHP and ASP.NET.
Using Amazon S3 service we can host all our images and videos to serve web pages. But there are some limitations using S3 service when we want to serve images.
If website needs different thumbnail images with different sizes from original image, it is tough. We have again need to subscribe for EC2 also. Though the data transfer from S3 to EC2 is free, it takes time for data transfer before processing image resize operation. Uploading number of files in zip format and unzipping in S3 is not possible to reduce number of uploads. Downloading multiple files from S3 is not possible in case if we want to shift to another provider. Image names are case sensitive in S3. Which will not load images if image name does not match with request. Among all these first one is very important thing since image resize is general requirement. Which provider is best suitable to achieve my goal. Can I move to Google AppEngine only for the purpose of image hosting or is there any other vendor who can provide above services?

Well basically I can't find anything regarding storing an image within a folder on the server, as appose to the SQL database. I have already written code to store the image within my database, but I also need to store the image as a physical entity for CSS purposes, here's a part of my code which can probably be used.

I have this file upload control. I have created a folder name "images" in my visual studio project. I want to upload image into this folder. BUT, when I am uploading a image, system does not show any error. It is uploading the image. But I cannot see it into the "images" folder. But, when I browse the folder from my computer like if I go to c:/my documents/vs project/my project/images. i can see the uploaded image. Then why the image is not visible from my visual studio?? as the image is not visible in my visual studio project, user can not see the uploaded image. my code is as below:

Which is the better alternative when allowing file uploads on a page (through a Gridview populated by a coded DataSet)? Store the image itself in the database or to store only the path name to the saved file in file system. If it matters, I do not expect to have more than a few dozen images stored in the database at any given time.

We are using Telerik RadEditor control in our project and having some problems with its integration with our user documents storage engine. We've implemented custom content provider for Telerik image manager and it shows correct documents in dialog. But in doesn't switch between images while selection. You can see this on this picture. We've tested this behaviour on the blank ASP.NET page without any additional CSS or JS. Rad editor tag could be found below. Please help! Why do this could happen?
<telerik:RadEditor ID="radEditor" runat="server"
ToolbarMode="ShowOnFocus"
ToolsWidth="402"
EditModes="Design"
ToolsFile="~/RadEditor.xml"
Skin="Default">
<ImageManager ViewPaths="IMAGES" EnableImageEditor="False" ContentProviderTypeName="FileStorageContentProvider, App_CODE" />
</telerik:RadEditor>

I would like to be able to give my users the ability to securely upload and store files, sometimes upwards to about a gigabyte in size. I'm not quite sure what's the best way to go about doing this. I would like to have the connection between the client and the server secured, so I'm sure I will probably have to use SSL. Now, my major crux is secure storage. Being that the data is somewhat sensitive, I'm wondering if I should encrypt the file before it is stored. I guess my question is, should I open the file and encrypt each byte or encrypt the file as a whole. I'm assuming that the latter is the better option. I know that there are a number of examples of how to encrypt a file using a number of different methods (aes, des, md5 (hashing not really encrypting), etc). Currently, to encrypt text, I am using the Rijndael algorithm, sha1, 256 bit keys, a predefined passphrase, salt value, and IV.

I'm currently developing a web application whose primary user function is uploading and downloading of files. The files will be stored on the hard disk (no cloud storage yet).
Taking into consideration the possibilities of gigabytes of data and a large number of files, do I need to organize files into sub folders to account for the fetching of a file or is the file system's indexing already very efficient and I can ignore this potential bottle neck?
Update:
On a side note, I plan to store file names and any additional information in a SQL database and only query the disk when a user actually wants to download the file. This is how I plan on retrieving files:
FileStream stream = File.Open("C:file.txt");
byte[] fileContent = new byte[stream.Length];
stream.Read(fileContent, 0, fileContent.Length;
Any file information will be retrieved from the database. The hard disk will only be used for saving and fetching files.
Update 2:
Files will be saved as GUID + EXTENSION on the hard disk while the actual file name is stored in the database.

I have a windows application that stores a file on the current user's isolated storage, lets call this user Adam. On the same machine I have a Web service (The Web Service's application pool is running with Adam's credentials) that uses the same dll to access the file on the isolated storage but it is trying to access a file on the Default User's profile instead of the real user's profile (in this case Adams Profile)
Why is it trying to look for the file on the Default User's profile Instead of Adam's Profile? How can i make it look for the file in the right profile?. I'm running it on Win 2003, C# and .Net framework 3.5

When I move some web-based code from VS2008 to VS2010, I find it is different when it is hard to handle the Image class.
Let's take the following code as an example.
[Code]....
As I have already imported the System.Drawing namespace, I still cannot use Image.FromFile method as VS2010 detectss the Image class is in System.Web.UI.WebControls namespace.I have lots of such a kind of code in my project using Image class and I will get messed if need to modify the code from
[Code]....
Since I also used image in my variable name.

I created image from byte array
System.Drawing.Image newImage;
using (MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream(imageBytes, 0, imageBytes.Length))
{
ms.Write(imageBytes, 0, imageBytes.Length);
newImage = System.Drawing.Image.FromStream(ms, true);
}
and now I need to have this image as a source for asp:Image (System.Web.UI.WebControls.Image). Is this possible as I know that conversion is impossible?

I was looking over the Create a Movie Database Application in 15 Minutes with ASP.NET MVC (C#), and it used entity framework and I saw this code.
[Code]....
I am just wondering, does this mean, this code actually downloads ALL the data from the SQL server for that table, and then filters where the Id matches, and then is stored in the var originalMovie? I have seen the "Linq to SQL", does this send this as sql query to the SQL server, and therefore only the relavent rows are returned from SQL server?
