SQL Reporting :: Using SQL Server 2005 Express - Use SSRS And Business Intelligence Development Studio?

May 12, 2010

I have a working SQL Server 2005 Express on my PC. Now I want to use Business Intelligence Development Studio so that I can create reports using SSRS. But I am not sure what to do. I assume I have to download this module. But the only things I see when I search is the entire SQL Server 2005 Express. I do not want to do this and wipeout my present databases. Can someone list the steps I need to follow to get this working on my PC?

DataSource Controls :: Is Free Access To Business Intelligence Development Studio Possible After Expired Trial

Jan 4, 2010

A year ago I did some design work for an ASP.NET 3.5 website that uses an SQL Server database hosted by my ISP. This website is only really active around this time of year for an annual photographic competition. Last year, I installed SQL Server 2008 Development Edition together with a trial copy of VS2008 Professional and the trial period lasted long enough for me to do what was needed back then. My intention was to buy VS2008 Pro around now in time for our current competition. In the meantime, I have reverted to
using VWD 2008 Express.

However, that purchase decision has been put on hold while I check out the economic and practical impact of waiting until VS2010 becomes available (in late March?). I'm guessing that it would be much cheaper to wait for VS2010 rather than buy VS2008 and then upgrade. Money is short because we are a non-profit organisation.

The practical issue is that I need access to SSIS Designer to update a DTSX file I created last year and I need that now. March is too late. The SSIS Designer is part of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) but BIDS is no longer available to me because it appears to have been provided with the trial copy of VS2008 rather than with SQL Server 2008 Development Edition. When I try to run BIDS I am told the evaluation period has ended. Is there is any way for me to gain free access to BIDS 2008 while I wait to buy VS2010?

Installation :: Access Denied To Machine.config - Windows 7 Development Environment

Mar 14, 2010

I have just ported my VS2008 development environment to a new computer running Windows 7. One roadblock I'm having is that when I edit machine.config in VS2008, I cannot save it back to its location - I get an error saying Access Denied. I am logged in as Administrator and have tried to set myself up as owner but the crazy security rules in Windows 7 are frustrating this operation. (I could do this on my previous system - VS2008 running XP.) I set the Administrators permissions to Full Control and made this file's owner Administrators (vs the previous SYSTEM)

Installation :: Another "HTTP Error 404.17 - Not Found" On Vista Business Targeting .Net 4?

May 5, 2010

I have read quite a few posts about this error message but unfortunately none of them addresses my particular problem. The error message is: HTTP Error 404.17 - Not Found

The requested content appears to be script and will not be served by the static file handler. The application was fine until it was migrated to VS2008 and targeted to .Net 4.0. For the sake of debugging, I changed the web page (default.aspx) to simply diplaying the word "Test".The following details do not make much sense because the the corresponding handler of an ASP.Net page is StaticFile

Installation :: Development To Web Movement: Directory Listing Denied - This Virtual Directory Does Not Allow Contents To Be Listed

Oct 27, 2010

I made a web form on a development website of mine (we'll call it dev.somewhere.com) and tried to publish it out to the web (we'll call it [URL]) in a subfolder. I named it default.aspx like I was supposed to and it worked flawlessly on the dev site. When I published it out the web, I wound up getting the following error when trying to get to the subfolder: [URL] Directory Listing Denied

This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed. Confused and flustered, I tried to go to [URL], but I wound up with some error that won't tell me the problem. Instead it tells me to change the my web.config to read <customErrors mode="Off"/>.

I have a VS 2008 solution with 16 projects (1 web site and 15 class libraries. The website uses the assemblies). This all worked fine on Win XP pro.
My work PC just got upgraded to Windows vista business and i'm receiving the following error each time i build the project.

Could not load file or assembly 'xxx, Version=1.0.1363.21887, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. Access is denied.

I went on and signed all the assemblies and added them to the GAC. But i keep having this error when i build my project. I'm running vs 2008 as administrator.

How To Get Visual Studio Development Server To Work With PHP

Jan 26, 2011

I'm a .NET specialist working with a PHP/Flash programmer to deliver an app via IIS. After jumping through 17 hoops of fire and defeating a gargoyle in a gruesome battle to the death, I managed to get my IIS 7.5 server to cooperate with PHP, and now if you browse to my public web site, you can see the Flash objects happily doing their behind-the-scenes stuff with PHP, whatever that may be.

But... when I'm debugging my app using the VS Development Server, that still apparently doesn't know how to cope with PHP: I'm getting the same HTTP 405 (Method Not Allowed) errors that I was getting on IIS before aforementioned gargoyle breathed its last ("The HTTP verb POST used to access path '/php/blah.php' is not allowed.").

So, what do you have to do to get the VS Dev Server to play nice with PHP?

Disabling Visual Studio Development Server?

Aug 12, 2010

When debugging my website project I usually go to start options in the web project's properties and select 'Don't open a page' and 'Use custom server' with a url that's in my host file pointing to my local IIS.

Even when I do this though visual studio still spawns it's own Development Server instance every time I hit f5.

Also for web application projects that have shared ascx files for instance Visual Studio will also launch an instance of Development Server each time I debug the solutions for each for these projects. This results in a million instances of Development Server running on my machine at any given moment.

Is there any way to disable development server for a given project completely? Without pointing it to a localhost sub application?
