Mar 3, 2010I'm getting this problem with one of my web projects. I've looked at [URL] and other suggestions around the place, none of which apply here. The odd thing is, it's occurring with *one* of my new web site projects, but not another one. Odd again is that they're both 100% fresh sites, created with the "New Web Site" option in the File menu, within a day of each other, and nothing has been done to them, apart from a bit of "hello world" html. WebSite1 was created first, and Cassini worked when I first created it the other day. A day later, I created WebSite2 and Cassini worked (and still works) with that one.
However, when I open WebSite1, I get the above error code - again, it was working fine the other day, and WebSite2 works fine. I've compared their .sln file - so differences apart from the VWDPort number used, and of course the path to the site and various GUIDs. Everything else is identical. Same with comparing web.config files. No differences there at all. So I'm stumped - why would Cassini start up fine with WebSite2 (and subsequent sites I create) but suddenly stop working for the WebSite1 project, when it was working ok a couple of days ago?

Nov 23, 2010Not too long ago I was given a new PC with windows 7 Professional on it. Before, I had vs 2008 running on win xp which worked OK. I started getting error msg (Unable to connect to ASP.NET development server) after I installed vs 2008 (version 9.0.30729.1 sp1 vs team system dev. edition) and ran one of my projects and even a simple test project. The first msg shows the syntax of webdev.webserver with an example in the bottom. I can get this error by running the project or by showing any page in the browser. I noticed that file WebDev.WebServer.EXE does not appear in the folder C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv3.5. If that's the only reason why I am having this problem than how can I fix it. I was told that .net framework 3.5 works on top of .net framework 2.0?! I just want to sort out this .net framework mess on my new machine. I am willing to uninstall all .net framework and start fresh. Another thing that I am willing to try is to get from a coworker the WebDev.WebServer.EXE (from the .net framework 3.5 folder) and see if it works.

Jun 7, 2010I developed a website project using visual studio 2008 and language used is c#. It was working fine till yesterday[i.e., It compiled and also i could run it using the asp.net development server by pressing ctrl+f5] and today when i tried to run it says "unable to connect to asp.net development server". I tried to reinstall visual studion 2008 and even now its not working. Also when i go to websites n asp.net configuration option it say the same error "unable to connect to asp.net development server". I absolutely no idea about why this error popped up. I got my project demo. day after n how can this be set right.

And when I press OK a second dialog reports this error:>unable to connect to the asp.net development server. I reinstalled, repaired and re registered msdbg2.dll and edited hosts file but still get this error. I need to debug an application but I can't. This error is on a 'Win 2003 server enrterprise service pack 1' with a vs2008 team system installation. What can I do to remove this error and run and debug my application?

May 17, 2010I just started getting the error message "Unable to Connect to the ASP.net Development Server" when debugging a website with VWD 2008 (everything was fine in the past). My system is Windows Vista with Windows Live OneCare firewall. I have reviewed other postings related to this problem, and they indicate firewall setting problems - settings not allowing VWD internet access. However, my settings on the "Windows Live OneCare Firewall Advanced Settings" tab specifically allow VWD.

Visual Studio :: Cannot Connect To Development Server After Closing The Server And Restarting The Project
Sep 29, 2010I'm getting "Cannot connect to ASP.NET development server" almost every time I stop the ASP.NET server before restarting the project in debug mode. It can take between 15 seconds and 2 minutes to get the error message, and Visual Studio is frozen.
Sometimes I get three in a row, and I have to wait 2 minutes each time, or go into Task Manager and kill to process. Then I have to start Visual Studio 2010 again, which is at least three times slower than Visual Studio 2008 to open.
It's *extremely* annoying. I know I don't have to close the server if the code has changed, but sometimes I simply want to restart my website in debug mode (there is a cache on most web service calls, so this clears the cache). A workaround is to add "foo" code to a class and restart the project.
I'm running Visual Studio 2010 Professional on Windows Server 2008. I'm running the Visual Studio Power Tools too, with the latest update.

Note: I was able to connect to both of these ftp through filezilla, via a webbrowser, and through windows command line.

Mar 23, 2010I am unable to connect to my local instance of SQL Server 2008 Express using SQL Server Management Studio.I believe the problem is related to a change I made to the connection protocols. Before the error occurred, I had Shared Memory enabled and Named Pipes and TCP/IP disabled. I then enabled both Named Pipes and TCP/IP, and this is when I started experiencing the problem.
I have now set Named Pipes and TCP/IP back to disabled. When I try to connect to the server with SSMS (with either my SQL server sysadmin login or with windows authentication), I get the following error message:
"A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)"
My first question here is: why is it returning a Named Pipes error? Why isn't it using Shared Memory? It seems like it is not listening on Shared Memory for some reason?When I set Named Pipes to enabled and try to connect, I get the same error message.My windows account is does not have administrator priviliges on my computer.

Jul 13, 2010I am working on a project where one of the requirements is to re-write an ASP.NET application. The old ASP.NET application was based on .NET Framework 1.1. The new ASP.NET application is based on .NET Framework 3.5.
One of the functions in the old web application was the ability to send email. The old code used the System.Web.Mail.SmtpMail class, whereas the new web application uses the System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient class.
In testing this on our development servers, everything worked fine. However, we have two beta clients testing out our software, and they both run into problems sending email in the new web application.
The specific exception is as follows:
"Unable to connect to the remote server ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it"
Both the old and new ASP.NET application are on the same server (Windows Server 2003). They both are using the same Exchange mail server. Why is it that the old ASP.NET application can successfully send email, but the new one cannot?
I looked at the old code, and it did not use any form of authentication, it just specified the sender's email address, the recipient's email address, the subject, body, and server, and sent the message. I did the same thing in the new code, with the only difference being that I used the SmtpClient class.
Below is a code snippet from the new ASP.NET application:

May 18, 2010I have a clean installation of Windows 7 with VS2010 RTM and am trying to get the ASP.NET Development Server to work. When I run the project, the WebDev server starts and shows that it's listening on port x on localhost. I've tried:telnet to the port. The port is not listening. running netstat -o shows that the WebDev server is in fact not listening on any port. manually changing the WebDev port to a different port and restarted VS without effect. I have Windows Firewall turned off entirely and am not running any other firewall software either.

Nov 27, 2010I am having some major headaches trying to get a Web Dev 2010 and SQL Server Express 2008 R2 to work together. At one point I hade Web Dev Express 2008 and SQL Express 2008 working together just fine, then I upgraded to 2008 Express R2 and have never been able to recover.
I have attempted to uninstall and reinstall several times, browsed the forums, watched videos, and while I have picked up a few things, I am still far from being able to get these two apps to work together for basic user authentication.
Here is where I am at. Web Dev Express 2010, .Net 4.0, and SQL Server Express 2008R2 installed. I have ran the .v4 aspnet_regsql.exe app against SQLEXPRESS, but when I bring up the Web Site Admin Tool, it cannot connect.

Thinking that I may have some uninstalled connection info causing problems, I reviewed several of the security videos on this site, and decided to attempt to use my own database install rather then the default ASPNETDB.
So I now have 2 Database Engines (SQLEXPRESS and LOC). I created a new databases on LOC, named LOC and AspNetServicesDB. I then created users named LOCADMIN and AspNetServicesUser, made then the owners, and set the default database for eacg.Next I ran aspnet_regsql.exe from the v4.0.30319 folder, connected successfully, and installed the tables under AspNetServicesDB. The new tables (roles, membership, profiles) were installed. I then proceeded to copy the above machine.config connection info to the web.config file, and modified it as Joe Stagner did in this video. My edited web.config info:

Yet when I bring up the Web Site Administration Tool test the single provider, I get this error:
