JQuery :: Posting To Web Services Works?
Sep 24, 2010
I am currently using JQuery to post to action methods in my MVC app. The methods are quite complicated and since I only know the basics of Javascript and JQuery, if I wanted to use JQuery to make a client side call, would I be able to make a call to a web service to do this? I am new to all these technologies so not sure about how posting from JQuery to web services etc works.

Got a pretty simple page where i want an update panel to become visible or hidden based on a button click. When i run this page in VS2010 in debug mode it works as i expected it to - page does not post back, the panel just appears or disappears on the page without the whole page refreshing.
I uploaded this to my server, and the page is posting back when you click the button.
Server is win2k8R2 x64 IIs7.5
Do i need to enable anything in the IIS configuration?

I'm very new in web programming stuff, so my question is about basics. I'm developing a SilverLight application and need to access the database from it. I'm using LINQ to SQL to get data from database and a WFC web service to deliver it to my app. Everything is working fine when I'm running my app within Visual Studio. When trying to publish the web service to IIS - the web service call fails. To make my question simple, I will focus on a brand new web service. Here the steps I'm doing:
Start Visual Studio 2008 -> File -> New -> Project -> Web -> WCF Service Application
Project Name: MyWcfService
Resulting Visual Studio generates a sample project with implemented Web Service "Service1"
Rebuild, start from Visual Studio (host on ASP.NET Development server)
--> Everything works fine, I see my service under http://localhost:52489/Service1.svc link
Now I want to host this service on my IIS (I've IIS7 on Vista x86 PC)
Visual Studio -> right click Project -> Publish -> target location -> Create new web app named "MyWcfService" -> Publish
Just to be sure check my C:inetpubwwwroot folder - now it contains the "MyWcfService" subdirectory with all required files.
Open IE on my PC http://localhost/MyWcfService/Service1.svc
The result is:
HTTP Error 404.3 - Not Found
The page you are requesting cannot be served because of the extension configuration. If > the page is a script, add a handler. If the file should be downloaded, add a MIME map. I were trying to remove "identity" section from web.config - same problem. Switching off the firewall does not help either.

I have a keyboard-controlled menu which I did with jquery (When I press down, it marks second option and so on...)
But after I select the option I need, I want to click enter to call the button's OnClick method as if the user really clicked it. Which means I have to do a postback.
how do I do that?

I am using asp.net mvc 1.0. In this I have to create an UI for modifying the profile of the user. Now this modfiy profile will contain jquery tabs. and each jqeury tab will show some results such as user's personel information, professional info, etc on seperate tabs. I also want to give user ability to modify the fields and save this modified data. I am just not getting any idea how to do that. I have searched on internet for various jquery examples. most of them are just showing data to user by creating some partial views. Also i am not getting exactly how this functionality can be achieved through ajax on click of button.

have an ASP.Net page with two ListBox components, rendered in the browser as <select> lists. I'm using jQuery to move elements from one list to another by manipulating the DOM. I then select all elements with the mouse and postback the form. That way, all the list elements are posted with the form.When I submit the form, in my button_save() event handler, the Request.Form[<<listbox ID>>] values are correct. However the ListBox controls themselves, specifically their Items collections, do not reflect my changes.I've also used Fiddler to modify the select items and submit the form. Same as above, the ListBox values are no different, though the Request.Form values are. Would anyone know what's going on or what incorrect assumptions I'm making?

I am using the code as below of this post:First i will an fill array variable with the correct values for the controller action.Using the code below i think it should be very straigtforward by just adding the following line to the javascript:
data["__RequestVerificationToken"] = $('[name=__RequestVerificationToken]').val();
The <%= Html.AntiForgeryToken() %> is at his right place and the action has a [ValidateAntiForgeryToken]
But my controller action keeps saying: "Invalid forgery token"

data["fiscalyear"] = fiscalyear;
data["subgeography"] = $(list).pa n

I am loading an aspx page into a div using jquery.load(). The aspx page loaded into the div has a datalist. Each datalist item has a linkbutton. My problem is that the linkbutton is not causing a postback though. Strangely, if I change the linkbutton to a button, it does postback. Also, when loading the page normally (not from a jquery.load event), the linkbutton performs correctly. What is it that causes the linkbutton to not cause a postback when loaded this way? And is there a better way to handle this?

I got a list of checkboxes on my form, and a jquery script that catch a button click to get all the selected items (in an array) and post to a controller action.
This is my script: (yes A, looked at your sample but cannot get this to work)
[Code]....
That alert will print out correctly (like 1,3,5).
However when the above post hit my controller action, "selectedInvestments" are null, which I can't figure out why (back to my tekpub jquery videos, can't go on like this)

ive developed a web application in visual studio 2010, .net version 3.5. I have a windows 7 machine with ie8. I build and run my web application on my local machine and works fine. When i deploy to a web server ( windows 2003 standard, ii6, .net3.5 sp1 ), and view the deployed web application ( from my machine ), some jquery doesnt work. Specifically, smartwizard jquery control. Why does it work when i build and view the web page locally on my machine and not work when i build and deploy ( publish ) the web app on a web server and view it through the ie8 ( as i did locally )? There some other smaller issues with regards to jquery controls in which the control works fine when i run it locally, but not as good once ive deployed on a web server and view from the web server.

I have seen that ASP .Net Code Behind files are really slow. I have used local web services which i call from jquery ajax function and they are fast. But i am still confused? Should i display dynamic data from code behind or web services?
I let my web service return a JSON Object and i assign relevant elements from that JSON object to different html elements like (image, div etc.)

Ok so I'm not very familiar with Jquery as to know the possible cause of this, but I've been assigned to find out why the datepicker doesn't work porperly on a client's computer (it prints out the date without slashes like this: 24112008
So when I test the webform, I see it doesnt even pop up in Firefox (the client's browser too) nor chrome, only in IE8.
In the scriptManager we have:
<script src="http://www.website.com/Script/jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="http://www.website.com/Script/jquery-ui.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="http://www.website.com/Script/jquery-ui-i18n.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
and in the webform:
$(function pageLoad(sender, args) {
// Datepicker
$.datepicker.setDefaults($.extend({ showMonthAfterYear: false }, $.datepicker.regional['']));
$(".dates").datepicker($.datepicker.regional['es']);
});
The textbox that uses it goes like this:
<asp:TextBox ID="txtFeNac" CssClass="dates" style="margin-left: 7px" runat="server" ></asp:TextBox>

I have been moving my application to be more AJAX-based. Currently I have a web service call where I use jQuery to gather some textbox (string) and checkbox (boolean) results and pass it to a web service. Everything works really well, the response time is super quick. The only downside that I can see to this is
1) you need to use jQuery, which will add to the user's download time - this doesn't really affect my application too much because I am using jQuery throughout the site
2) users can see the code and potentially try to hack the web service because they know where it is
I am most concerned with #2. I've been reading a lot about .NET web service calls, using IAsyncResult,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2e08f6yc.aspx, and I am beginning to understand the 4 methods available in this article. However, is there extra bloat using this way compared to the jQuery web service call?If there isn't that much bloat or lag time using this method, I'd like to convert my application. Which one of these 4 methods is best in a scenario where I am just returning a small string value? The 4 methods in the article are to wait for EndInvoke itself, which from what I read is not recommended because this may block the first thread; and this should not be used on a service that affects the UI.Create a WaitHandle to wait for the 'OK' before EndInvoke is called Poll the IAsyncResult for .IsCompleted, using sleep() and a Do While until IAsyncResult.IsCompleted is true, then call EndInvoke Pass a delegate function to BeginInvoke to be called once the operation is complete.

I have an ASP.Net ListBox that I'm trying to populate via jQuery, using the following snippet:
$("#MyList_btnAddAll").click(function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
$('#MyList_lstAll option').appendTo('#MyList_lstSelected');
});
The code has two ListBoxes in fact, one a "source" and the other a "destination". As you can tell above the ListBoxes are MyList_lstAll and MyList_lstSelected. These are rendered in the browser as <select> elements, as you'd expect.
The jQuery is working great, the items are moving from one ListBox to the other, the DOM is updated but when I submit this form (not using jQuery), the ListBoxes don't reflect this change on postback.
I realize my modifications via jQuery aren't available in ViewState but I thought since the DOM was updated these changes would be part of the postback data? But in the codebehind after postback the ListBox contents haven't changed. Does anyone know what might be going on and what I can do about it?

I have an ASP.NET (3.5) web page which calls a few web methods (SOAP based) using jQuery's .ajax method. The web methods implement 'ScriptMethod' attribute and return JSON data. The web service file (asmx) is local to the same project.
I noticed these web methods execute synchronously on the server which means they run sequentially and affect performance negatively, some methods are waiting, when some of them are slow.
I read this article and I am not sure if I understand that WebMethods which implement Scriptmethod can run synchronously only (they implement IHttpHandler not IHttpAsyncHandler).
If this is true, I might have to change the design. I am looking for other designs, maybe like using WCF, where the browser can call webmethods using JavaScript and the web methods run asynchronously on the server.

I am using Visual Studio 2010 Release candidate1. I have to deploy my web application which consists of a website, certain window services, certain WCF services and Sql Server 2005 database.I read Vishal Joshi's blog(http://vishaljoshi.blogspot.com/2009/09/overview-post-for-web-deployment-in-vs.html) detaing Web Package in VS2010. I want to know how to deploy window services and WCF services using Web Package. Also, I want to create a web setup (.msi) for deployment instead of Web Package so that the .msi takes care of all the application and database deployment like the web package does.
