MVC :: Referencing TempData On Master Page Causing Compile Errors?

Jan 29, 2010

Working through Steven Sanderson's excellent Pro ASP.Net MVC Framework book.I am trying to reference the TempData collection to display a message after an item has been successfully updated and so have placed a reference to this on my Master Page.[Code]....

This is giving me the following compile time errors:

Error 1 The name 'TempData' does not exist in the current context <programme location>

Error 2 The name 'TempData' does not exist in the current context <programme location>

If I reference TempData on a content page it compiles (and works) fine.

VS 2008 - How To Copy ASPX Page In A Solution And Not Compile Errors

Oct 31, 2011

I have a VS 2008 solution. I need to copy an existing .aspx page and re-name it to something else (need to make modifications to that newly copied page). But I keep getting compilation errors saying that duplicate text boxes exist. Can't I have control on different .aspx pages with the same name? How can I do this elegantly?

Referencing Content From Master Page?

Mar 19, 2011

I have a Master Page that contains a Menu Control. Each menu item clicked is supposed to load a new aspx page. My problem is (since I'm new to Master Pages) actually loading a Content Page. This is what my MP code looks like and it's only just a snippet. The first set of code are the ContentPlaceHolders in my MP. The second set is the code in my code-behind file in my MP. Hope this makes sense. In the VB code, all I'm trying to do is load my Customer.aspx page. What am I missing?

HTML Code:
<asp:ContentPlaceholder ID="Welcome" runat="server"></asp:ContentPlaceholder>
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="MainArea" runat="server"></asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="CustContent" runat="server"></asp:ContentPlaceHolder>

Code:
Private Sub Menu1_MenuItemClick(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.MenuEventArgs) Handles Menu1.MenuItemClick
Try
Select Case e.Item.Value
Case "mnuCustomerMaintenance"
MainArea.Page = Customer
End Select
Catch ex As Exception
End Try
End Sub

Referencing User Control In A Master Page?

Oct 5, 2010

I have the following code which at the moment sits in a number of pages:

[Code]....

It sits in the page because I reference the usercontrol type 'emailSignUp' and pass data to an exposed variable 'DisplayType'. The control is located in the pages master page. Ideally what i'd like to do is put this in its own class or something, so I can just call it passing the configuration variable, but I'm unsure how this would work -

Visual Studio 2010 - Site Upgraded VS08 - VS10, And Now Compile-time Errors Do Not Show Until I Request The Page At Run-time?

Mar 11, 2011

I have an ASP.NET website that worked fine using and debugging in VS2008. I went through the upgrade process opening the solution in VS2010. I can run the site, but as I make changes in the app_code folder classes, they don't seem to commpile and warn me of compile-time errors. As soon as I get to a point that calls the class, the errors show up. Sounds JIT I guess, but this isn't how it was working in 08. Is there an option that was changed in the upgrade process? This is a large project, I really don't want to break something and not find out until some obscure page is opened.

MVC :: Login Form On Master Page Causing Endless Loop

Nov 15, 2010

I am having trouble with my login form. In the current design I have a login ascx which I am trying to use for the user to login from both the home page (as a box on the left) and on the login page that I will use as part of a checkout process.My login.ascx is a partial view using straight out of the box code for simplicity...

[Code]....

What I am trying to achieve sounded rather simple until I tried to implement it. I can get the login page to come right up if I use Html.EditorForModel rather than Html.RenderPartial, but I can't use Html.EditorForModel on my main page because the main page isn't bound to a model.

What I would like is to show login form on main page. If login fails show the validation summary just like on the Login view. I could live with the user being redirected to the login view, but this wasn't what I had in mind.

Causes Transient Aspx First Line Compile Errors?

Feb 8, 2010

Every once in a while, when I'm editing an aspx or ascx page, Visual Studio will start telling me there is an error on the first line of my file. For instance, right now, it is saying Argument missing on line 1. That line is just your typical header, with no apparent problems (to my eyes), and I hadn't even changed that one when the error started appearing.

<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="MyControl.ascx.cs"
Inherits="MyNamespace.MyControl" Debug="true" %>

Unlike most compile errors, the build still succeeds. (At least this time it did.)

It's worth noting that no other errors or warnings are thrown by this file or its as[p|c]x.cs

Sometimes, to get out of it, I am forced to undo my changes until it disappears and carefully redo what I wanted. This time, grasping at straws, I cleaned and rebuilt the solution. While I was typing this, the error disappeared, sometime after the rebuild finished.

I have a suspicion that it often happens when I tinker with the databinding in my markup. Sometimes it seems to appear if I'm missing a space inside a tag before its closing slash, like so:

[...] Text='<%# Eval("Field") %>'/>

versus:

[...] Text='<%# Eval("Field") %>' />

...But that doesn't seem to have been the problem in this case.

When coding PHP and Perl, sometimes the interpreter would throw an error referencing the very last line of the file. Over time, I learned to look for imbalanced brackets and other delimiters somewhere up above. This problem in ASP.NET feels similar, but stranger, since it's the first line, and not just something amiss above, cascading down to the bottom. Or is it just Visual Studio getting temporarily confused? Can any pros shed some light on this problem, with reasons why it happens? I'd like to have some logic (as opposed to my own built up superstition) to throw at this the next time it rears its ugly head.

Compiler - Automating Finding Compile Errors In Pages?

Jan 20, 2011

I have an ASP.NET website where the pages call a few components in DLLs. I need to change the signature of a method in the component, and short of doing a text search, don't know if this will break any pages or not. IMO, this is the weakness of web programming -- you don't get the benefit of a compiler telling you about syntax errors.

But it doesn't need to be so. Does anyone know if there is a way to run a spider over a website watching for compile errors, or perhaps some tool that would compile all the .aspx files in a folder structure looking for compile errors?

This is merely for syntax checking -- not to actually pre-compile the website.

EDIT It looks like aspnet_compiler is being recommended. I don't use Visual Studio projects for the website -- it's grown over time with my own templating system (back before Master Pages were available). So something that would run aspnet_compiler over all the files in a folder might work...

Configuration :: First Time Deploying A .Net Application, Get Compile Errors?

Mar 11, 2011

I am using TFS to build my MVC app. I cannot do it because I get lots of compile errors. I am using version 4 of .Net and MVC 2. On the build server I have the .Net framework 4.0 installed. It has been suggested that I should also download the MVC framework as well, but when I look on the net all I can find is this MVC framework; http://mvcframework.codeplex.com/ which does not seem to be relevant and does not work anyway.

One of the assemblies I am missing on the build server is System.Web.Mvc dll.Typical error messages include; "The type or namespace name 'Mvc' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Web' (are you missing an assembly reference?)"What do I need to do to fix this?

Security :: Postbacks With Authentication Causing Errors?

Jan 28, 2010

After adding personalization and authentication to my site, I was getting pitched out of my application( which is on a hosted server), and sent back to the log in screen . I disabled authentication to see if I could figure out what was going on. I found that

I was getting a system error:

Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.

This error has been reported elsewhere [URL] so I made the following change to my web.config

<pages theme="Theme1" enableViewStateMac="false" enableEventValidation="false" viewStateEncryptionMode="Never">

This seems to have worked to a point, because with authentication DISABLED, I no longer get the error. But when I RE_ENABLE authentication, I get pitched out randomly back to the login screen. Time out is not an issue. It only happens when I move very quickly through screens that are doing a lot of postbacks.

This is the authentication stuff from my web.config

<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name=".ASPXAUTH"
loginUrl="~/Login/Login.aspx"
protection="All"
timeout="3000"
path="/"
requireSSL="false"
slidingExpiration="true"
cookieless="UseDeviceProfile" />
</authentication>
<authorization>
<deny users="?"/>
</authorization>

I tried AutoDetect on cookieless as well. No change. I would appreciate ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem.

URL Rewrite And Button Click Event Causing Errors?

Feb 10, 2010

I am using the URL Rewriter (Intelligencia.UrlRewriter). I have a page with the name sitename/user/search.aspx and the rewrite is sitename/test/search Now the problem is... When I am on sitename/test/search and I click the search button, I get an error "The resource cannot be found." because when the page posts back to itself, it goes to sitename/test/searchsearch.aspx basically putting the original name in the URL which messes everything up. What should I do? Some pages do it and other pages do not do this problem with me.

Visual Studio 2005 - Web Site Project - Errors Not Caught At Compile Time?

May 7, 2010

For the first time in my career, I'm working on an ASP.Net (v3.5) project that has been set up as a Visual Studio 2008/10 Web Site Project.

I'm not keen on this way of working this way for various reasons but for the moment and until such time as the company sees the virtue in working in an environment with namespaces, designer and project files etc., I have to continue with the existing codebase.

I've run into some odd issues since I began this but perhaps the oddest one of all is that althought VS lets me build the code, it doesn't reliably pick up compilation errors so these are not noticed until runtime.

I know the website model allows dynamic/hot compilation when a request is made for a specific but I can't see why it wouldn't do this when I manually (F5) build/rebuild the project. Its immensely annoying as you can imagine and I can't find a workaround.

Duplicate System.Web.UI.AsyncPostBackTrigger Controls Keep Getting Inserted Automatically - Causing Parser Errors

Apr 8, 2010

I have an update panel with a number of [asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger...] controls, and everything was working fine. But now, something keeps inserting duplicate AsyncTriggers, and instead of simply being [asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger...] controls they're [System.Web.UI.AsyncPostBackTrigger...] controls, and I get parser errors as a result. So I delete the duplicate triggers, and they get re-inserted within a few minutes, seemingly randomly.

Aspx Page Doesn't Compile When Page Is Copied From Another Project?

State Management :: Master Page's Treeview Selected Node / Setting The Properties In Master Page?

Aug 2, 2010

I have a master page containing a tree and 3 dropdown lists. I am populating a context menu on right click of each node, and when clicked on any item of the context menu, it navigates to required pages.

My problem is after navigating to the required page, the selected values from the drop down lists and the selected node from the tree are getting cleared.

I can set the selected values for the dropdown lists by making some properties in master page.
But how do i maintain the selected node?

In my content page, i have got the valuepath of the right clicked node.

Or is there any other way than setting the properties in master page?

Referencing Page Class In Project Subfolders?

I just want to reference a page class that is not in the root folder (in subfolder from the root folder) in my usercontrol code-behind file like this

if (Page is ar_default){ //}Where ar_default is my page class name as it is in folder name "ar"The user control is also in the same subfolder as the page being accessed.Wnen I use the same method with pages in the root folder, there is no problem at all and it is working although I notice that the classes still not appearing in the coding drop down menu but if I typed the name correctly it work.like so:if (Page is _default){ //}When using the same code with classes in subfolders it is giving this error:The type or namespace name 'ar_default' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)I'm not using any namespaces also.
