In webform one could add pages to his website simply by adding them to the correct directory in the virtual directory.
In MVC however you need to write new controlls is that mean i should "recompile" the whole site all over again?
My site is alreay online and i dont wont to go off line to add additional feature.
We (out IT partner really) recently changed some DNS for a web farmed site we have so that the two production server have round-robin DNS switching between the two. Prior to this switch we didn't really have problems with WebResource.axd files. Since the switch, when we hit the live public URL, we get an error:
CryptographicException
Padding is invalid and cannot be removed.
When we hit the specific servers themselves, they load fine. I've researched the issue and it seems since they're sharing assets between two servers, we need to have a consistent machineKey in the web.config for each server so they can encrypt and decrypt consistently between the two. My questions are:
Can I generate a machineKey via a tool on the server, or do I need to write code to do this?
Do I just need to add the machineKey to the web.config on each server or do you think I'll need to do anything else to make the two server work together? (Both web.config's currently do not have a machineKey)
i m not able to open certain sites from internet explorer 7.it is showing all sites as restricted .

I am having problems adding a reference to a custom assembly in my Bin folder within a controller class I am writing. I can see the dlls in the Bin folder of my Solution file and when adding a new 'using' block to the top of code page, its not picking up any of my assemblies as I try to spell them out.I tried just typing them in and building the solution, but I get errors, it just wont pick these up!

Is there an way to do this without moving all the code to asp files and adding a controller and from there use the Authorize attribute? I would really prefer to not need to do this!

UML and Patterns: An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis and Design and Iterative Development, that follows the UP(Unified Process). It uses a Grasp Controller pattern to interact with domain classes by some methods like NewSale(), AddNewItemToSale() and CloseSale. In windows form, I can instantiate a object of this class in the UI and then use its methods to perform the actions. This works well in Client apps, but when I use asp.net mvc, I cannot find a way to instantiate an object (one for each user) that was always visible for a Controller (MVC). I cannot insert as an attribute inside Controller because it always create a new one.

my MVC2 delete and only my delete controller is refusing to return any class information. Its really similar to my edit function and the views are all auto-generated so I don't see the problem.

I have a simple model where a Person has Gifts. I have a view which is a list of Gifts belonging to one Person.
My problem is with the Create action for a new Gift. I want it to default to the PersonID that we are already viewing the list of Gifts for. I tried simply passing the last PersonID (they are all the same)
Html.ActionLink("Create New", "Create", new { id = Model.Last().PersonID }) which works fine if there is already at least one Gift for that person but if this is the first Gift I don't have a value.
My Gift List controller knows the PersonID I want to pass but the view doesn't.
How do I pass this PersonID from my Gift List controller to my Gift Create controller via the Gift List view? Or is there a better way to do this?
I have a filter on my MVC web site. I display some records in a few different controller actions but when moving from one action to another I want to apply those filter values.
How can I persist values from controller to controller?
Should I use Session? TempData?
I am using Structure Map for IOC.
Maybe I could have a class that contains a Property for each Session Value that I use in my application and inject it on the controllers that need session?
How do you get the current action / controller name in a controller or class?

I have a User entity and a department entity. I have a UserViewModel and DepartmentListModel which has List of departments.
UserViewModel has a property of type DepartmentListModel .
Now on user/create action I need to populate DepartmentListModel by calling DepartmentController's list action. List action returns populated DepartmentListViewModel.
From UserController how do I set DepartmentListModel ?

Say I have several Areas that are baed on user roles.Differnet roles have different functionality, but also have some "shared" functionality like say "Payments"Now, I created a PaymentController (and it's views for listing, creating messages) in Shared (not an area) and it works fine.
Would it be possible (and how?) to create a PaymentsController class in one of the Areas, have that inherit the PaymentController Class in Shared?
If I can do this, I can successfully share common functionality across areas, and at the same time extend the derived controller to include some 'area specific' functionality to common shared controllers. (Such as the "REturn to xxxx" text and route of the returnurl, which are a bit more complicated than I just made it sound)

View 4 RepliesI am having some trouble getting a second site to work with SSL in IIS 6. The server is Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
I am getting the error "IIS was unable to start the site, Another site may already be using the port you configured for this site. Please select an unused port"
Both sites have different IP address but are on port 443.
When I stop one - I can start the other. But cannot run both at the same time.
I have tried editing MetaBase.xml file as a workaround but the file seems to be readonly. When I go to save, I get prompted to create a file.
I have custom redirection implemented in a module. Do I have to modify each config for all sites or is there a more general approach?Also, I have files in App_Data for this module, which would cause replication.

I found out that the main site has been developed using the .NET Framework, and the forum has been built using PHP based vBulletin.
Are these two different domains? In other words, is the Forum some folder inside the Visual Studio Project www.example.net running as part of the ASP.NET website? Or is "forum.example.com/content a link to an altogether different website?
I have two websites that run on two different servers and they both both have their own asp membership databases. One is http:// and one is https://. Is it possible to create a way that a user can access both websites while only entering username and password once? Or if the user logs onto the https site can I then redirect to the http site and auto authenticate?
View 3 RepliesI want to be able to quickly deploy updates to a site that is fairly busy. For smaller sites I would just FTP the new files over the old ones. This one, however, has a few large dll's that regularly get updated and while they are copying the site is effectively down (plus there is the hassle of making backups of them in case something goes wrong.
My plan is to use TortoiseHg to synchronise with a staging copy on the server over FTP (using netdrive or something similar). I can then check all is running smoothly and once that is complete I would like to run a .bat file (or something else) that will create a backup of the live site (preferably only the files that are about to change, but that is not critical) and then copy the newly changed files over to the live site.
If possible I also want to have the copy ignore certain directories (like user uploads) so that it won't overwrite those files on the live site?
I've heard RoboCopy is the way to go but I'm not sure of where to start. Would I need to call 2 commands (1 for the initial backup and one for the copy)? Is there any way to restore the live site to it's previous state should something go wrong?
The site is in ASP.NET and would be copied to Windows 2003 server.
EDIT: It gets a little tricky when web.config items have changed and need to be merged so that the staging servers settings (appsettings, connection strings, etc) don't get deployed to the live site. How does that get handled?
