MVC - Factor Repository Interfaces Based On Multi - Level Object Model?

Feb 15, 2011

I've got a multi level dependency chain in my object model: An organization has the following children relationships:

Organization
.CompetitionGroups
.CompetitionGroups.Venues
.CompetitionGroups.Competitions
.Divisions.Games
.Divisions.Games.Participants
.Divisions.Games.Participants.GameSegments
.Divisions.SubDivisions...
.Divisions
.Teams
.Teams.Players
.Teams.Participants
.Teams.Participants.GameSegments
.VenueDates

This is just a glimpse at the object model, but it's focused on the complexity of the relationships and lists. What I can't really get is what's the best way to factor my repository interfaces, given the requirements to do a unit of work. For example, to create a game, you'll need a venuedate and two participants. Does that mean the GamesController should require an IGameRepository, an IVenueDateRepository, and an IParticipant repository? Should they be rolled into one repository?

Also, what about in the consumption cases? For example, to display a signle team's schedule, you'll need all of the Participants for that Team, all of the Games for that participant, and all of the GameSegments for the participant. If those are factored into individual repositories I can't see how you can do efficient queries. Does that mean you have Repositories specifically focused on different cases? for example:

public interface IScheduleRepository {
public ICollection<Game> GetScheduleForTeam(Team team);
// More consumption methods
}
public class ScheduleRepositry : IScheduleRepository {
public ScheduleRepository (ModelContext context) {
// Do stuff with context
}
public ICollection<Game> GetScheduleForTeam(Team team) {
return (
from p in context.Participants
where ((p.Game.VenueDate != null) &&
(p.TeamId == team.Id))
orderby p.Game.VenueDate.StartTime
select p.Game).ToList();
}
// more consumption methods
}
public interface IGameRepository {
public void AddGame(Game game);
// More crud methods
}
// Not showing games repository
public class GamesController : Controller {
public GamesController (IGameRepository gamesRepo,
IVenueDateRepository venueDateRepo,
IParticipantRepository participantRepo) {
// do stuff with repos here
}
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult AddGame(Game game) {
// Skipping validation logic
// this?
VenueDate = venueDateRepo.Add(game.VenueDate);
foreach (Participant p in Game.Participants)
{
participantRepo.Add(p);
}
Game = gamesRepo.AddGame(game);
// or this?
// how would the game repo know to persist
// the children elements? is that tight coupling?
Game = gamesRepo.AddGame(game);
}
// more consumption methods
}

My question is I don't yet understand to what degree factoring your repositories make sense based on a connected object model. I'd love to get some advice here.

Enable Multi - Factor Authentication

Nov 17, 2010

Does anyone have any pointers for implementing the following: I want to cheaply enable multi-factor authentication on an asp.net website. I want people to be able to use an app on their phone (iPhone at the very least) to generate the token used alongside their username/password to login to the site. I do not want the people to have to carry a third-party device/fob to generate the token.

I am setting up my new project..We are using entity frame work 4.0..

Is there any way to generate all classes and interfaces as we create manually for 3-tier architecture...

Or do i need to generate manually...

Ex:

Architecture :: Provider Model Versus Repository Pattern

Feb 4, 2011

I am trying to understand the fundamental differences between the Provider Model and Repository Pattern.

I have used the Provider Model in many many situations and am confident with it when designing applications. However, the more examples I encounter on the internet and asp.net evolution I keep coming across "Repository" Interfaces for classes that look like a Provider Model.

I have dug around a bit but all I can see is that they kinda do the same thing, or closely overlap by enforcing an inheriting class to adhere to a "contract" of implemented / abstracted methods etc...is there more to it?

How To Create Multi - Level Accordion Menu

I am looking for multi-level accordion menu (drill down to few levels deeper) (expand and collapsible) for my website. Is there a sample anywhere I can use? it will be nice if I can dock it to the left by clicking on an icon and slide back when I click on the icon again.

Something like this:

Displaying Multi-level Menu Without JavaScript?

Nov 9, 2010

I have a menu that looks like this:

[Code]....

Since I can search any of those categories, I'm looking for a more user-friendly way of displaying it as is without using a combobox and with no javascript. With the combobox, the deeper the menu, the more leading spaces it'll have. As seen above, that's exactly how it'd look like in a combobox.

The Model-Repository-Service-Validator-View-ViewModel-Controller Design Pattern

Jan 19, 2010

When I first heard about ASP.NET MVC, I was thinking that would mean applications with three parts: model, view, and controller.

Then I read NerdDinner and learned the ways of repositories and view-models. Next, I read this tutorial and soon became sold on the virtues of a service layer. Finally, I read the Fluent Validation documentation, and I'll be darned if I didn't end up writing a bunch of validators.

Tonight, I took a step back and thought about what had become of my project. It seems to have become the victim of the design pattern equivalent of "feature creep". Somehow I'd gone from Model-View-Controller to Model-Repository-Service-Validator-View-ViewModel-Controller. You want loosely coupled and DRY? We got your loosely coupled and DRY right here! But I'm wondering if this could be a case of too much of a good thing.

Am I right to be concerned? Or is this actually not as crazy as it sounds? On one hand, it seems crazy to have so many layers. On the other hand, every layer has a clearly defined purpose that makes sense to me. Have your MVC applications turned into MRSVVVMC apps too? If not, what do they look like? Where's that right balance?

AJAX :: CollapsiblePanel Not Working In Multi Level Of Nested Gridview?

Aug 2, 2010

Ques 1. I am pasting only excerpts of my panel code (limited length here) within which I have 3 levels. The collapsible panel works fine till level 2 but when I am clicking on level 3 it shows for a second and collapses back to level 2. The collapsible doesnt work on panel pnlUserAccess below.

Ques 2. Can I make collapsible panel work on particular button click or image click?. As when I just put to to 2 levels I have to edit within the gridview and as soon as I click on the checkbox to edit the panel collapses.. I need to just give it a tree view style of appearance.

Ques 3. Can I also make the collapsible panel enable on read mode and disable on edit mode (if there is no possiblity for Ques 2)how to make it work. Just to be more specific on the code.

C# - Multi-tenant User Model

Aug 14, 2010

In a multitenant system that hosts multiple organizations and applications, where an organization may use several applications hosted on the system, should my user and role model be such that a single user or role can exist across multiple applications and organizations? Or should I limit a user entity to a single organization/application pair and then define some overarching model to tie those user entities together? That is: John Doe is a person He wants to use ApplicationA and ApplicationB He works for two different companies (just bear with me), OrganizationA and OrganizationB Should the user model be:

johndoe@someuniquesuffix is his unique user name. This gives him access to both applications for both organizations. johndoe@applicationa@organizationa is his username for ApplicationA at OrganizationA. [URL]is his username for ApplicationB at organizationA...and the same for OrganizationB. Then have some "master" list that says that all 4 user accounts for the apps/orgs correspond to the same actual "person", John Doe?

The same scenario(s) described above applies to how I will design my Role schema.

MVC :: How To Display Model Level Custom Data Annotation Validation Error

Nov 30, 2010

I am a MVC newbie & am lost in various ways validation can be implemented in my application.

I created a custom model-level data annotation validator attribute, but am unable to display its error message in the view. Basically, I have let's say 5 properties in the Entity class Job (model-level custom attribute called UniqueKeywords defined on it):

1) LoginID: value comes in the URL

2) Title: Required property level attribute defined on it

3) CatID1, CatID2, CatID3 - 3 categoryIDs - these are dropdowns in the view with same list of keywords in all 3.

I want to mandate that the values picked by the user in all 3 category dropdowns should be different.

With reference to the code pasted below, here is the explanation of what happens:

When I submit the form without specifying a title or picking anything from any of the 3 category dropdowns, the validation occurs for the property level Required attribute as well as model level uniquekeywords attribute, but the error is displayed only next to the required field "Title". I can confirm that the custom validation also works by filling in some text in the Title field & then re-posting the form...this re-displays the view, but the error message "Category cannot be duplicated" is not displayed.

Only relevant code sections are pasted below:

My Entity class code:

Access Office Word Object Model Through Asp Results - Error 80070005 - COM Object Not Registered

Aug 13, 2010

I have developed a website that allows users to upload office documents then uses the office object model to convert the document to an HTML file that it then displays in an iFrame. I have, of course, included references to Office.interop.word, and the site works fine on my development machine. When I uploaded it to my production server the site functions fine until I try to upload a document. I initially got a similar error that said "COM object not registered". I realized that Word wasn't installed on my production server. So I installed word and now when the server tries to access the word object model I receive the following error:

Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {000209FF-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80070005 Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))

I searched the registry for the corresponding CLSID and found a corresponding folder. I added full control to the IUSR_ account and due to the persistence of the error I eventually added full control to "everyone" and ensured these permissions inherited down to the rest of the folder. I then added full control to IUSR_ and again eventually added full control to "everyone" to my microsoft office folder. I don't know what other permissions to grant and where in order to make this "Access is denied" error go away. I must be granting them in the wrong place, because as far as I know I can't be any more permissive than "Everyone" "Full Control".

Custom Role Provider - Additional Fields - Represent Multi - Layered Security Model

Apr 4, 2011

There are multiple roles. (Role A, Role B etc) There are multiple input/output fields. (Field A, Field B etc) There are multiple permission levels controlling access to each field. (Read, Direct Edit, Edit With Approval, None) Each role has its own permissions to fields. (Role A has Read Permission to Field A; Role B has Direct Edit permission to Field A etc) Every role can be assigned to users and they are assigned by Geographic information. (User A is assigned to Role A for Continent: Europe - Country: Germany; User B is assigned to Role A for Continent: Europe - Country: France; User A is assigned to Role B for Continent: Europe - Country: France etc) Users can have multiple roles User identity is coming from Windows Authentication.

is it possible to represent this type of kind of multi-layered security model using ASP.NET internal membership/role providers? If so, what should my starting point be? Creating only custom role provider with custom methods and fields be enough?

Pattern For Retrieving Complex Object Graphs With Repository Pattern With Entity Framework

Oct 13, 2010

We have an ASP.NET MVC site that uses Entity Framework abstractions with Repository and UnitOfWork patterns. What I'm wondering is how others have implemented navigation of complex object graphs with these patterns. Let me give an example from one of our controllers:

[code]....

It's a registration process and pretty much everything hangs off the POCO class Person. In this case we're caching the person through the registration process. I've now started implementing the latter part of the registration process which requires access to data deeper in the object graph. Specifically DPA data which hangs off Legal inside Country.

The code above is just mapping out the model information into a simpler format for the ViewModel. My question is do you consider this fairly deep navigation of the graph good practice or would you abstract out the retrieval of the objects further down the graph into repositories?

Web Forms :: Creating Application Level Session Object?

Mar 24, 2011

creating session object to use across my web application.

I'm working on an application that requires a login control upon which we would need to set around 10 different session variables (related to the user). These values are required/ used many times across the web application so it would be really handy to create a class/ object which can be accessed in all pages with doing multiple lookups into the user table on DB. Also, I would like to avoid any conflicts with multiple developers using same session variable names and thereby causing issues down the road.

I know this is not a new kind of request and must have been created and used by many of the developers.

Setting Up 2 Factor Authentication

Jul 22, 2010

We are in the process of building a new website which we want to lock down to specific computers to only allow access, then once the pc is authenticated we will do our in built user authentication. Also, when a pc is known, we dont really want anything on the pc which can be easily transfered (by the client) onto another pc in order to gain access to the website. the best way to achieve this 'lock down', we dont really want to go down the AD route and have loads of extra user data to maintain.
