MVC :: Posting Data Versus Model Data?
Nov 24, 2010
Lets say I have a model Model1 with the property say "IsAccessed". Now lets pass this model to a view using the View("Action1", model1). Now lets say user performs some operation in the View and then submits. Basically a Post happens to an Action "Action1" and the same model1 is passed to the Post Action. Now if I had set "IsAccessed" as true in my get Action of "Action1" and if this property is not accessed in the view ... its getting reset to false. Is there any reason for the same?

I have faced with some strange behavior and I hope you will be able to tell, what I do wrong. My goal is to change the order of some object. This object has property Priority which defines the order. Objects render as a list and user can drag elements for prepare order. When user click save, JS code modifies Priority property in hidden fields in accordance with order of elements in the list. And this form is sent to the server.

I am trying to understand the fundamental differences between the Provider Model and Repository Pattern.
I have used the Provider Model in many many situations and am confident with it when designing applications. However, the more examples I encounter on the internet and asp.net evolution I keep coming across "Repository" Interfaces for classes that look like a Provider Model.
I have dug around a bit but all I can see is that they kinda do the same thing, or closely overlap by enforcing an inheriting class to adhere to a "contract" of implemented / abstracted methods etc...is there more to it?

In Model-View-Presenter what is the correct pattern to do a page that:
a) contains a grid for browsing a list of items
b) an alternate mode for editing single items .maybe you are toggling between two asp:panels.
Do you just make the presenter smart enough to do two types of presentations?
Make 2 presenters?
I'm new to this pattern and want to do it correctly. I understand how I would do this functionality on two pages. Just not sure what is the accepted practice when the browse and detail exist on the same page.

I am posting data to an external website server side. This works when the data parameter is less than about 640 characters. The data gets truncated beyond around 640 characters. The code I'm using is below:
Function PostData(TransId As String, QuoteNumber As String, data As String) As String
Dim url As String = "http://localhost:49608/test2.aspx"
Dim encoding As New ASCIIEncoding()
Dim request As WebRequest = WebRequest.Create(url)
request.Method = "POST"
Dim postData As String = "WAA_PACKAGE=Vendor&WAA_FORM=blahblaj&WAA_HTML3CLASS=nHTML&VendorID=ENG3135&"

I am designing my database and wanted to know the best way to handle this problem. I have tabs on a page that looks like this:
Tab1
--SubTab1
----Data1
--SubTab1
--SubTab1
Tab2
--SubTab1
--SubTab1
--SubTab1
Tab3
--SubTab1
--SubTab1
--SubTab1
I can put this information in the database that will be stored in multiple rows like this
TypeID---------------Name
1--------------------Tab
2--------------------Data
ObjectID----------Parent-------------TypeID
1-----------------0------------------1
2-----------------0------------------1
3-----------------0------------------1
4-----------------1------------------1
Or I can just put this in the database like so:
<root>
<tab name="MyTab">
<tab name="MySubTab">
<data>1234567890</data>
</tab>
</tab>
</root>
If I pull just the xml from the database then I would not need to select multiple rows i just need to select one row then parse the xml into a class then pass that data to the controller. I just would like to know if this is a good idea? Will I be making a mistake if my site to scale in the future? Will this make more maintenance as the site gets bigger and want more features?

I've been used to decorating data model classes with data annotation attributes, but the purist in me baulks slightly at including purely presentational attributes such as display format here. I am, however, quite happy to keep validation centric attributes here. One good reason I have to continue keeping all annotations etc. in the data model is that my view model aggregates data model classes, e.g.
my ViewModelBase.DetailItem<TEntity> property in the view model is just a reference to an entity class in my data model. If I wanted to move presentational annotations to the view model, I would have to quite radically revise my design to one where I duplicate data model properties in my view model and use an object mapping tool to populate view model objects based on data model objects.

I have a simple Usercontrol that has an image and textbox. This has just been really difficult to use, and I am wondering what I am doing wrong.
[Code]....
The first problem is the in the Page_Load procedure. It seems that if I create this control dynamically, the Page_Load is called before the image or textbox are created making it impossible to intiantiate the objects. Since this was so difficult, I just created 5 of these usercontrol and put them on the page.
[Code]....
I can now set the image src from my code, but when I click submit, there is no information about the textbox contents (as well as the image contents). The information shows in the browser, but it is not returned to the server code behind section of my code.

I am developing web-app in .NET for 5 months (and enjoying it =)) and I am reading 3 books, all of them teachs at least 2 methods for acessing data: ADO.NET and SqlDataSource object.
I am used to work with ADO.NET method because I feel that even if it needs coding by hand, I can separate the SQL routines from the page and I can customize database routines better.
For now I am using DataReader mode because the application and the database is on the same server and there is only 1Gb RAM available so there is no advantage using DataSet on this moment.
Am I thinking this right? There are some things with SqlDataSource that I don't know how to do it well...
For example:
I have a routine that inserts a record on a table then gets the ID of this record using SCOPE_IDENTITY() function of SQL Server, than it uses this ID to insert another record on another table. Because I use a one-to-many relationship on multiple tables...
How can I work this situation using SqlDataSource object, is it even possible?

I have a some problem while Posting xml data Using HttpWebRequest. Actually I want to Post 3 Form variables
2 of them are for credential and the third one is for XML data to an api, The api will authenticate and will process the xml data, and will return success if no error found.
Here is what there documentation says.
The data will be passed to the gateway via an HTTPS FORM post and a string value of "success" will be returned upon successful receipt of the data. Three total FORM variables will be posted, two of which will contain credentials, and the third will contain the HR-XML data. A string value of "error" will be returned if the posting fails for any reason.
Form Fields integration_field1 = 1234, integration_field2=2345pwd, hrxml=form field containing the HR-XML order (string)
Here is what I have Coded..

I have an aspx page like this:
[Code]....
Well, as you see clicking the button will redirect user to "http://www.somesite.com/somewhere" and also will post three specified fields as data to that page; which can be retrieved using Request.Form["field#"] at destination.
I want to do all these works using C# or VB.NET code, because I don't want my hidden fields to be accessible to users (who may use firebug or something similar).

I've gone rounds with this ever since I started programming classic ASP 12 (or so) years ago and I've never found a great solution because the architecture of ASP and ASP.NET has always been a swamp of bad practices, magic shared singletons, etc. My biggest issue is with the HttpApplication object with its non-event events (Application_Start, Application_End, etc.).
If you want to do stuff once for the entire lifespan of an HTTP application, Application_Start is the obvious place to do it. Right? Not exactly. Firstly, this is not an event per se, it's a magic naming convention that, when followed, causes the method to be called once per AppDomain created by IIS.
Besides magic naming conventions being a horrible practice, I've started to think it might be a reason there exist no such thing as a Start event on the HttpApplication object. So I've experimented with events that do exist, such as Init. Well, this isn't really an event either, it's an overridable method, which is the next best thing.
It seems that the Init() method is called for every instantiation of an HttpApplication object, which happens a lot more than once per AppDomain. This means that I might as just put my startup logic inside the HttpApplication object's constructor.
Now my question is, why shouldn't I put my startup logic in the constructor? Why does even Init() exist and do I need to care about Application_Start? If I do, can anyone explain why there is no proper event or overridable method for this pseudo-event in the HttpApplication object?
And can anyone explain to me why in a typical ASP.NET application, 8 instances of my HttpApplication are created (which causes the constructor and Init to run just as many times, of course; this can be mitigated with locking and a shared static boolean called initialized) when my application only has a single AppDomain?

I am using asp.net mvc 1.0. In this I have to create an UI for modifying the profile of the user. Now this modfiy profile will contain jquery tabs. and each jqeury tab will show some results such as user's personel information, professional info, etc on seperate tabs. I also want to give user ability to modify the fields and save this modified data. I am just not getting any idea how to do that. I have searched on internet for various jquery examples. most of them are just showing data to user by creating some partial views. Also i am not getting exactly how this functionality can be achieved through ajax on click of button.

Since we can't post data to cross domains, I want to post the data to my aspx page and a code-behind code will take the data and submit to cross domain (which is not being operated by me, so I don't have permission to modify source code for jsonp) and also the website to which I pass my post data is also returning a cookie which includes shopping cart info and I need to store it on my local browser cache as well.
What I know is I need to use WebResponse and WebRequest classes for that manner.

I have a Person class with an Address property. The Address contains a Country property of type Country which in turn has a CountryCode property of type string, as follows:
Person.Address.Country.CountryCode
I have a select element on the page with a name of "Country.CountryCode". With MVC 1 this was bound perfectly to the CountryCode property of Country. In MVC 2 however, I get the following error when the page is posted back:

Is it better to have the calculated field returned with the rest of the results or is it better to calculate it later when you need it?
Example: I have a GridView that displays search results that has many fields like:
Application ID
Name
Account Type
Account Number
etc.
The account number field is not always consistently the same thing though. For accounts of type A they are eight digits long and for accounts of type B they are twelve.
After the search if they select a record and choose to continue the application I need to check the eigit digit account number for any access restrictions. All accounts of type A and B have an associated eigit digit account number, it is just that type B are the only ones to have the twelve digit number.
So should I add a redundant hidden field like "Common Account Number" to the search results and just hide it, thus making the heavily used search take slightly longer and making the results grid take up more space in the view state?
Or
Should I call the database when they try to continue the application and translate the Application ID into the eigit digit number so that I can use it to do my access restriction check? This will require one extra call to the database but the translation should be fast as both fields are in the same table and the application ID is a primary key. The continue application button will be used less as there are many other command options.

I have an application that needs to post data to a url on the web and then receive an xml response. I have an HTML form (provided by vendor) that posts the data correctly, however when clicking the submit button the page is redirected to the post url and the xml is displayed in the browser. I need to do this on a postback within an existing asp.net project. Basically, the user will fill out the form, the form data will post to the url, the xml response will be received, and the appropriate values will be displayed on the screen. I've found a bunch of examples for doing this but I just can't seem to get my head around it. Can anyone point me in the right direction or explain how I should go about this?

data["__RequestVerificationToken"] = $('[name=__RequestVerificationToken]').val();
The <%= Html.AntiForgeryToken() %> is at his right place and the action has a [ValidateAntiForgeryToken]
But my controller action keeps saying: "Invalid forgery token"
