MVC :: DropDownList Can Either Select Item OR Save Selected Item Back To Controller?
Jul 7, 2010I have a project that queries a set of times from a database and uses these entries to populate a dropdownlist. Once the page is loaded, the user can select one of the items in the DropDownList. When the "Save" button is clicked, the Selected item value is returned to the [HttpPost] version of the controller action. This item is then stored into session. If the system returns to the page containing the dropdown, I want the saved Value to be selected in the DropDownList. What actually happens is that the DropDownList is always set to be the first item in the list.

When I select from the first dropdown I want to populate the second. However, this is not happening. The postback is happening, but the SelectedIndexChanged handler isn't being called (I have a breakpoint which isn't being hit). The user controls are created dynamically and put into a PlaceHolder which itself is within an AJAX Updatepanel, with ChildrenAsTriggers set to true.

How do I make it a member? When I do not put OnSelectedIndexChanged="DropDownList1_SelectedIndexChanged" in mark up, BC30456 does not pop up, but nothing happens when dropdownlist selected item is changed.

Nov 20, 2010I am new to asp.net (I may use some incorrect termology while I explain my issue...) and need some help with DropDownList in Gridview. Currently I have a GridView set up with three Columns bound to a database: Column1 - some kinda of index, Column2 - string, Column3 - DropDownList(called Active). So far when I build the page, all the columns show up and the DropDownList appears and the values are bound correctly. I want to change a value in the DropDownList and automatically update that value in my database.
I have set AutoPostBack = true and I made a DataObject (called UpdateActive) to update the database (it takes 2 inputs, the Column1 index and Column3 DropDownList value).However, I don't know how to find the row that I am changing, is there a way to figure out what row it is (like finding the Column 1 index?). Also, I don't want to have to click a button to update the data.

Handling Exceptions That Happen In A MVC Controller Constructor?
Apr 22, 2010What's the best way to handle exceptions that happen from within a controller's constructor?
All I can think of to do is use Application_OnError() or put a try/catch in my ControllerFactory.
Neither of these solutions seem ideal. Application_OnError is to broad - I have some non-mvc content in the site that has its own error handling. Using a try/catch block seems kinda hacky.
If I'm serving different content type -html/text/json/rss.... I would like to be able to handle the exception from within the action method instead of having to write all kinds of conditions to determine what kind of error message to serve.

There is nothing upstream from a controller except a view, which is simply a presentation of what happened in the controller.

Dropdownlist Does Not Trigger The SelectedIndexChanged?
Nov 9, 2010I have a dropdownlist (dr1) that is supposed to trigger the update of dr2 without affecting dr3. The problem is that dr1 triggers the update, but does not go into dr1_SelectedIndexChanged. I know that because the label does not change and that the pause does not happen

DropDownList SelectedIndexChanged Reverting To Some Other Value
Sep 21, 2011There are a couple of things going on in this post:
1. The DropDownList (DDL) reverts back to index = 1 on postback (this has been solved, post #10)
2. Use of General Lists to populate the DropDownList (Post# TBD)
I have a series of DropDownLists (DDLs) one depending on the other for its selection value. The first one specifies the table name. On the SelectedIndexChanged event of the table name DDL the second DDL is populated with a list of field names contained in that table. And the third DDL with unique values contained in the selected field (In case you are wondering I am building a custom query tool).
The problem is that the Field names DDL, after selecting a new field, reverts to the second field listed in the table, something to do with the postback I would presume. The interesting thing is that it does not happen for the Table name DDL, though I am doing something a trifle bit different there.
I'll include the code for the three DDLs and the two SelectedIndexChanged events.
