Media Chase Versus Aspdotnetstorefront

Jan 20, 2011

I'm starting an ecommerce project that has very heavy backend integration requirements. I need an ecommerce package that is easy to customize and can function at the enterprise level. If you are familiar with Media Chase and Aspdotnetstorefront, could you let me know what your experience has been and if you lean towards one or the other (or if you recommend a total different platform).

Can Integrate AspDotNetStorefront And Sitecore

Feb 2, 2010

integrate AspDotNetStorefront and Sitecore? I've been trying for the past couple of days to come up with a way to get the two systems to play nicely together, but it doesn't seem feasible from what I can tell. A couple issues I've run across so far:

Authentication between the two (AspDotNetStorefront has its own implementation, Sitecore just uses/extends .NET Membership)The main DLL for AspDotNetStorefront is what pops up in the stack trace when I get yellow-screened, but that DLL is obfuscated so I can't figure out what the problem is.

we need to keep our existing AspDotNetStorefront application as an e-commerce backend and use Sitecore to do everything else. AspDotNetStorefront has a CMS as part of it, but it's really not an acceptable solution for anything but really basic content pages.

EDIT:

I've decided to break this whole thing down into the different problems that I am facing at the moment and solve each one as efficiently as I know how. I'll detail the ones I have here and then update when I run into new ones.

Problem 1: Authentication between the two systems.

This one isn't too bad actually if you're knowledgeable about forms authentication tickets, which I wasn't at the time but am learning quickly enough. As long as the two systems share the same encryption info, it's easy enough to pass information back and forth between them using cookies as stated below in the accepted answer. The other kicker is that I needed to set the CustomerGUID in the AspDotNetStorefront Customer table to be the user ID from the Sitecore user tables (standard ASP.NET membership). So far this approach seems to work pretty well (I'm still in the proof of concept stage at the moment.

Problem 2: Getting at the product data

This one was a little more troublesome. The aforementioned web service has a few issues I've had difficulty working around. However, since the databases are going to be on the same server, I simply decided that since all I really need is the price and ID I would go ahead and set the ProductGUID column of each product in the Storefront database to match the Sitecore item ID of the corresponding item in the Sitecore database. This way I just need a quick query to grab the ProductID and price information which is only used in a few places. Everything else is going to be housed in Sitecore.

If anyone has anything to add feel free, as far as I can tell from Google, no one has actually done this before, so I'm having a lot of trouble finding resources on this particular topic.

UPDATE:

The integration is in fact possible and our site has been up for a week and a half now with very few integration related problems. This isn't something I recommend doing really on a personal level, but it is in fact possible to pull off.

Web Forms :: How To Interact Between Windows Media Player And Windows Media Services

Jan 12, 2011

I have an ASP .NET 2.0 (4.0 is an option) page that I've embedded the Windows Media Player to using OBJECT tags.

The player is connecting to a Windows Media Services publishing point on the Web server. This is on a 2008 server.

Everything works great, see it here: [URL]

If I understand correctly, the information the player is showing in its status bar comes from the ID3 tags of the current track. Continuing on this line of thought, the ID3 information must be coming to the player from the media server. Correct?

What I want to do is collect and use the information about the track that's current being played. I'd like to be able to create a custom display for the current track information. I'd also like to put a custom value in the track information to look up additional information about the artist/track from a database.

Application_Start Versus OnInit Versus Constructor?

Jul 23, 2010

I've gone rounds with this ever since I started programming classic ASP 12 (or so) years ago and I've never found a great solution because the architecture of ASP and ASP.NET has always been a swamp of bad practices, magic shared singletons, etc. My biggest issue is with the HttpApplication object with its non-event events (Application_Start, Application_End, etc.).

If you want to do stuff once for the entire lifespan of an HTTP application, Application_Start is the obvious place to do it. Right? Not exactly. Firstly, this is not an event per se, it's a magic naming convention that, when followed, causes the method to be called once per AppDomain created by IIS.

Besides magic naming conventions being a horrible practice, I've started to think it might be a reason there exist no such thing as a Start event on the HttpApplication object. So I've experimented with events that do exist, such as Init. Well, this isn't really an event either, it's an overridable method, which is the next best thing.

It seems that the Init() method is called for every instantiation of an HttpApplication object, which happens a lot more than once per AppDomain. This means that I might as just put my startup logic inside the HttpApplication object's constructor.

Now my question is, why shouldn't I put my startup logic in the constructor? Why does even Init() exist and do I need to care about Application_Start? If I do, can anyone explain why there is no proper event or overridable method for this pseudo-event in the HttpApplication object?

And can anyone explain to me why in a typical ASP.NET application, 8 instances of my HttpApplication are created (which causes the constructor and Init to run just as many times, of course; this can be mitigated with locking and a shared static boolean called initialized) when my application only has a single AppDomain?

Error CS0029: Cannot Implicitly Convert Type Media.WebService.multiValuedAttribute To Media.WebService.multiValuedAttribute[]

Aug 5, 2010

In Visual Studio 2008 I have a Class Library project (called Media) to which I added a Web Reference (not a Service Reference) to a third-party web service (wsdl). In the Class Library project a proxy class is created for using the service along with several classes for the types used in that service.

I also have a second Class Library (called Sync) that references the first one. And then I have a Web Site project that references the second class library. All of this is .NET 3.5

So Web Site > Class Library (Sync) > Class Library with web service reference (Media)

I want to step into the generated code, so I fire up the web site in IIS 7.5 and trigger the call to a method in the second class library (Sync) that in turn should call the web service proxy. I was fully expecting to hit the breakpoint, but instead got an exception:

Unable to generate a temporary class(result=1). error CS0029: Cannotimplicitly convert type Media.WebService.multiValuedAttribute to Media.WebService.multiValuedAttribute[]

Why is ASP.NET trying to generate a temporary class? Don't I already have the generated class from the first Class Library (Media)?

Second Request From Media Player In A Web Page?

Oct 9, 2010

I have an ASP.NET web application where a Microsoft Media Player object on the page (in IE) is issuing a request for an .aspx web page. In the page I use TransmitFile to send back the audio file. This works fine most of the time.

But, in some cases (a combination of IE version and a specific client, at least from what I can see) there is a second request issued, with the exact same URL. The only difference I can see between the first and second request is the user-agent value. The first request will have User-Agent: Windows-Media-Player/9.00.00.4508 and the second one will have User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729)

This second request is causing the audio file to be sent a second time over the net, which is wasteful. This is what I'm trying to avoid. I had a related question here, but in this case there is no Range request. It is just the same exact request again (same headers, except for the user-agent).

I was trying to suppress the second response (based on the user-agent in the header) with all kind of HTTP status responses (304, 404, 500 etc.) This works for some clients, some of the time, but breaks occasionally (the Media Player will just not play the audio, even though Fiddler will show it was transfered on the first request).

I would like to "convince" the browser to avoid the second request, if possible. As a second option I would like to find a response to the second request that will not break the playback, but avoid sending the whole audio buffer.

Web Forms :: Can't Get A Media Player Control On Web Application In VS

Jan 10, 2010

First of all, I have done a few C# applications, but are new to C# asp.net web applications.

What I am trying to receive is a simple Media player control on an aspx page. And furthermore a button (not the button on the media player control), that starts the media player with a videostream url. Thats all!

I can easily achieve this in an ordinary c# application form, by importing:

AxInterop.WMPLib.dll, Interop.WMPLib.dll and wmp.dll references in the project. Now i am able to choose a "Windows media player" control in the toolbox, which i can drag into my form. Nice and easy.

But when i import these dll´s in my ASP.NET Web application, I cannot see the media player control in the toolbox. Ive tried to right-click the toolbox, and click "Choose items", and see that 'Windows media player' is checked under the COM components tab. But i still cannot see the control in the toolbox. Only in an ordinary c# application form.
