View 1 RepliesCan you edit a website (in Visual Studio) on a server from your PC by going:File -> Open Web Site -> File System -> My Network Places -> Entire Network -> Microsoft Windows Network -> FooDomain -> FooServer -> Foo_Public_Shared_Folder (which is actually a web applicaiton in C:InetpubwwwrootfoobarWebApp).I suspect it is bad practice to edit a website that is pubished on a server like this - or at least highly unusual? Would I be right in saying that you should create a new website on your local PC then build and publish to the server in question?
One last point as well -if you need to make a copy of a published website and make some enhancements without losing the original - how can you do this i.e. you don't have the original Visual Studio project only the published site (i.e. this could be made by some web site authoring/wizard tool).
I am new to mobile app development and I dont want restrict myself to one platform. Some days ago I read an article that stressed on the fact that soon web apps running on mobile browsers may replace dedicated apps (at least for non-game apps). View 1 RepliesI've been worked with web services so far, and I'm interested in expanding my services to console applications as well so I started digging up with WCF but I'm conserned that I won't be able to use the HttpContext collection that I've been used to do with web services one important thing which is to generate a random value from HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["ALL_HTTP"] that I need to reckon if it's the same or at least near what machine that is calling my service. How can I overcome this problem?
I need to know what machine is calling to count the number of attempts to login into my system for example. So must do it inside of the svc code otherwise if I let the client inform what ip address or what computer he is using, anyone could forge this argument and surpass by another machine. May be I'm approaching this matter wrongly. And I should count the number of attempts per state session, but how is it done?
Our corporate intranet is designed so that each web application is a child application in the primary application.. Everything has worked fine with Visual Studio 2008 and even in 2010 running the website locally works great, the output directory for the child apps is ..in and the ProjectName.dll copies to that directory.. When I do a publish however it does not and I have to manually copy the dll from the bin folder in the project folder to the parent bin folder, this isn't hard of course but more of a pain in the butt each time I need to publish something. I made sure the output directory is correct for both debug and release yet on publish is just copies it to the child bin and not the parent bin as needed.

Currently there is a dashboard on the homepage of the website where all the pending approvals are displayed in a webpart. I want to build a plugin for MS Outlook so that whenever there is a new request for approval I want that request to show up in MS outlook. Where do I start with this? Do I have to expose my business logic layer through webservices?

We've got a product built using ASP.NET web forms (3.5), and are investigating adding an API to allow other applications to access data and business logic within the application.
What is the best way to implement this? I'm inclined to go down the route of using Http Handlers to read posted XML and return XML, but I'm sure there must be a better way. Is it advisable to use something like WCF instead?As the product will be downloaded and installed by users on their own servers (instead of hosted), it seems like there's a lot of pressure to get it right the first time as making changes will be hard once users start downloading and using the product.

I've searched around and found a lot of advice saying to modify the hosts file as such:

I've done that, but my actual site at mydomainname.com is still being used. Any other troubleshooting steps I could take?

Its working fine on test and all the payment processing is working well. But aI want to update my database after succesful payment and for that I have created one THANKS.ASPX page where I fetch the response and if it is verified that update the database and also it working fine.
After redirect to paypal and successful patment I received page from Paypal site for successful payment where transaction ID and other information are displayed.
There is a link in paypal page called "Return to Merchant Test Score" and when user click on the link it redirects to my Thanks.aspx where I fetch the response and if verified the update the database.
But my problem is that If after successful paymet user not click the "Return to Merchat Test Score" and directly close the browser then it not update my database.
