What exactly is the e.Row.DataItem return.. MSDN says.. returns An Object that represents the underlying data object to which the GridViewRow object is bound.
Here is my DataGrid...
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataSourceID="ObjectDataSource1" OnRowDataBound="GridView1_RowDataBound">
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField DataField="PracticeCode" HeaderText="PracticeCode"
[Code]....
Note : There could be other ways to accomplish this, but I'm looking especially why my p1 is null... and is there any way to get the Patient Object back from GridView after binding.

I have a profile object in session with profile information for the currently logged in user. I wand to be able to inject it into my business classes so I can do validation etc in them without having to pass it in the parameter list in every method.
I have tried something like this in my ninject module:
Profile profile = HttpContext.Current.Session["Profile"] as Profile;
Bind<Profile>().ToConstant(profile).InTransientScope();
However it blows up with null reference when I do Kernel.Get() in my aspx. The BusinessObject takes a profile via the constructor. If I hard code the profile instead of using the HttpContext then everything seems to work. Not sure if ToConstant is the way to go, I am really looking for something that will get evaluated every time a new BusinessObject is created.
UPDATE
It seems that asking for injection to happen on a page level object inline is too soon for the session collection to be available. If I move in the Kernel.Get call to Page_Load it works just fine.

I am playing about just now trying to teach myself a little bit about the entity framework. I have a Gridview data bound to a Entity Date Source using the Entity Framework. If I select certain items in that list I then wish to redirect another page and populate another gridview with just the items selected (but with more detail, different includes/navigation properties)
This is probably the most simple thing but I have spent 2 hours banging my head on the wall trying to get this to work. Essentially I have a continue button which when clicked should identify all the UIDs (a column in the gridview) of the rows and allow me to subset to just these rows and pass them to another page to be rebound to another datagrid

I populate a DetailsView from an ObjectDataSource that is coded in a class - meaning that the ods Select, Update, Insert and Delete are class methods. The selected record is set to come from a GridView.SelectedValue.
My problem is that when the page loads the code crashes. I am pretty sure I know why: the DetailsView is pulling from a class object and instead of using the existing class object it instansiates a new one which is empty.
Here is the details view code:
[Code]....
Here is the odsDetailsView_1:
[Code]....
As you can see from the code the odsDetailsView gets it's information from a class object "Match". The detailsview is not controlled by any code behind.

Again, I am new to the ASP.NET world, and I come from a Windows Forms background. I'm working with an ObjectDataSource that retrieves a collection of business objects. With the collection, I am going to be binding it to a CheckBoxList and other various controls. The business object that I am using is an Employee.
To get all of the employees, I create an ObjectDataSource and set the "Select" method. I then set the DataSourceID of the CheckBoxList to be that of the ObjectDataSource. When I load the page for the first time, I see all of the employees. Now, the user goes through this page and selects all the employees they want to see information about (by checking the box next to the employee name). Finally, the user hits the button called "Display." Upon postback how do I get a list of those employees? I've tried the following solution, but I'm not sure if it's the best practice in obtaining all those employees again. Here's my solution...
In the CheckBoxList, I set the DataTextField to the Employee's name. I also set the CheckBoxList's DataValueField. This property is a little different. I set this to be a UNIQUE IDENTIFIER, which can distinguish this employee from other employees. Now, when the user hits the button "Display" I use my ObjectDataSource again and MANUALLY call ObjectDataSource.Select(). I cast the returned value as a List<Employee>. Finally, I iterate through all list items in the CheckBoxList...
[Code]....
If the item is selected, I parse through my list of employees that was returned from the bjectDataSource.Select(). I use the item.Value and compare it to each employee's "key." If the key is found, I know that the employee is selected. I put this employee in another list called EmployeesSelected.
Finally, I take EmployeesSelected (which is a List) and set my GridView's .DataSource and call .DataBind() on the GridView.
Is this the "best practice" of re-obtaining the Employees that are selected on my page, or am I making this too complicated?

I've posted the same question in the Object Data Source forum. This is a link to it http://forums.asp.net/t/1554083.aspx. Maybe I should've posted here to begin with. There seemed to be some overlap so I wasn't sure which was the best on to post the question in.
I'm trying to get a better understanding of how I could've designed my app so that the Object Data Source could work with the properties of my business objects. Please read the other post to see how it's currently being done. Sorry for the link to the other page. I didn't want to post a bunch of duplicate information. I would love to get some suggestions for alternative ways of doing this.

I have an ASP.NET 4.0 site that I expect to come under extremely high volumes in the next month or so and I am attempting to maximize performance. The site is divided into the front end UI pages, as was as a business and data layer. My thought was to pull the business and data layer out and wrap them in a NamedPipes Connected Windows Service running in Singleton mode.
I created the windows service, got the connection setup correctly and now I am wondering if this is just asking for trouble. Is this a good idea or should I just leave the Business/Data layers in the main solution and let IIS spin those objects up and down for each request? In essence I was thinking that using a WCF Windows Service as an Application Server would be more efficient but that is just a theory

I am working on Vs2005 and asp.net 2.0. I have a solution with 4 projects (business object, components, data access, webclient)When I change any existing method or property in Business object or data access, it is not reflecting in the application. I have deleted the existing references to the project and added them after the new build. I always get errors like "method not found or No overload method "It seems like old verion of dll is still there in the reference.

I have a DetailsView (DV) control, an ObjectDataSource (ODS) control, and a button on a page. I have 2 classes in the App_Code directory (Customer and CustomerDAO). The DAO class provides static methods for the ODS control and simply hack values in (ie...no real database selects/updates). The Customer class has 2 properties (Id and Name) and a default constructor. The page takes an ID on the querystring and determines if the DV control is in insert or edit mode. If in edit mode, it sets the SelectParameter on the ODS (id field), calls ODS.Select(), and then calls DV.DataBind(). The existing (although fake) customer is loaded and display properly when this happens. I then change the name of the Customer in the DV and click the Button to save the new data.
Everything seems to be wired up correctly as the UpdateMethod that is specified in the ODS control is called and succeeds (even in my real example with my database). The problem is that the BoundFields in the DV control have not been updated with the new values and therefore the existing values are updated in the database and my changes are lost. I have handled the OnUpdating event of the ODS and the values are still the old values. I have also handled the OnItemUpdating event of the DV control and the NewValues IOrderedDictionary still has the old values in it also. In looking at the MSDN article for the UpdateMethod, it states the following:
Parameter Merging
Parameters are added to the UpdateParameters collection from three sources:
From the data-bound control, at run time.
From the UpdateParameters element, declaratively.
From the Updating event handler, programmatically.
I am using the BoundField classes in my DV control so I would have assumed that the first bullet above would have handled the updating of values, but it doesn't appear to work with the way I am doing it. If I set the values explicitly in the OnUpdating event that is fired by the ODS control (the 3rd bullet) the right values are updated (again...even in my real database situation). It seems like my only issue is that the automatic binding that I expect from the DV control isn't working as I would expect it to. Here is the code that I have in my fake example:

Traditionally with an Object Data Source, the wired up class will have its public properties available for binding (i.e. Gridview columns, etc.) which works well. But what if one of my wired up business objects has a property that is an object itself; can I drill down to a property on that object property and still use it?
So in additiona to the traditional:MyBusniessObject.OrderID...I want to use:MyBusniessObject.Customer.NameID
Your 1st response might be to just wire up the 'Customer' class, but I need properties both on 'MyBusinessObject'and 'Customer'. I do not think this can be done, as the ODS will not display properties on an object instance property. I have tried manually typing in the drilled down value as well, but that wasn't a success either.

I think I'm getting mad here...I thought this should be super simple, but I just can't figure out how to do that.This is what I'm trying to do:I want to create an rdlc report using the ReportViewer control in ASP.NET 4 (VS 2010), and, as its datasource, use a class with some properties.I tried everything I can think of, but I just can't figure this out. All the docs I found state that the object should appear in the DataSource pane of the website, but I can't make it appear there.I would like the fields of the class to appear in the report desiger so I can use them - but I can't do that either.Using the designer, I can only define new dataset - I don't want to use dataset, but business objects!So - how can I do that? Do I have to use some kind of DataSource control? How can I make the report designer know about the business object?

I am writting a website using .net in some of my pages I need to use datagrid for showing some datas and for binding my data to datagrid I use object datasource something like below :
//this is
public class userData
{
private long userid = 0;
private string username = null;[code]....
and then in my apsx file I put an objectdatasource and bind the select statement to the GetUsersAmount() and then bind obejctdatasource to my datagrid but I think the way I've chosen is not efficient I just want to hear about your way of doing such these things.

I set up a DAL layer in a dll. This had a couple poorly named methods such as GetData(), which is the default name offered up in the tableAdapter wizard. I also added a few other methods for various reasons, all with better names. I then built the dll and referenced it in an ASP project. On one page, I added an ObjectDataSource, and set it to that tableAdapter (which isn't what I wanted to do, but that's a different story). Under the Select tab, I see the GetData and the other methods. Under the Update tab I see a variety of Update methods. Under the Insert and Delete tabs....I see the same methods as I saw under the Update tab. The Insert and Delete methods that exist for the tableAdapter were not available.
I figured that I did something wrong, and I didn't like that GetData name, so I went back to the dll and changed some things around (I think I added an Insert and Delete method, but by now I can't remember, except to say that I wasn't all that surprised not to see those two methods the first time). I also changed the GetData name to something else, then rebuilt the dll.
Since that time, I have yet to be able to change what shows up in the Object Data Source configuration. The Select adamantly insists on the GetData method, which no longer exists under that name, while the other three tabs all show a variety of Update methods, but neither Insert nor Delete. I noticed that just adding a reference didn't have any impact until the ASP project was built, which moved the dll to the bin folder where it needs to be for the Object Data Source configuration wizard to see it. Therefore, I deleted the dll from the bin folder, then rebuilt. I've also removed the reference, deleted the dll from the bin folder, rebuilt, added the reference, rebuilt again to get the dll back into the bin folder, and anything else I can think of. It still seems to be retaining the original schema from the tableadapter without ever updating to the new name for the GetData. Since that hasn't updated, the rest doesn't surprise me.
