Repeater Content Limits?

Aug 16, 2011

I have a requirement that the user wishes to be able to scroll through as many as 4000 records in a dataset on the screen. The average number is around 500 records in the dataset, and there are 12 columns of data in each record. I am using a repeater to do the binding of the data, no problem.

Around 500 the system performance is fine. The actual data binding is taking about 2 seconds and the screen painting is taking about 10 seconds depedning on the time of day (other internet usage within the company bogging down the pipeline).

However, when I try to do 2300 records, the performance is abysmal. The binding time is acceptable, but the screen painting is SO slow. Essentially a 11mb web page is generated.This seems like an awful lot of data to me for a web page.

1) Is this normal to have a web page served up that is that big? We're talking text, not photos.

2) Is there a limit on the number of records that a repeater can work with? Obviously I can throw as many records as I want, so I am looking at a practical limit vs an actual limit.

3) I notice when I throw a drop-down into the repeater, the time lag is even greater. Is this because of the need to render the drop down?

I have tried to convince the user that they should use paging instead, but they are insisting on using scrolling. I get why scrolling would be good, but I am concerned that the performance is hideous above a certain threshold and I don;t think I can make it render the page without throwing a significant network speed upgarde and dedicated line for the website.

Find Size Limits For POST On IIS?

Jun 3, 2010

I have a web service on which the end users will be uploading ZIP archives that can be very large (one test file is over 200MB). I'd like to handle oversized files proactively and size-limited upload failures gracefully.

Since the web app will be deployed on customers' machines, so I cannot easily ensure that the configuration matches any fixed size. I've documented how to use the appcmd command for them to set the requestLimits.maxAllowedContentLength value beyond the 30MB default.

But I'd like to handle it in the web app; I'm hoping for two things:

To show the current limit on the page where they initiate the file upload, something along the lines of:

Each file upload is limited to 15MB. If your archive is larger, (etc., etc., etc.)
To give a meaningful error when that size is exceeded. Currently, it takes a long time for the data to be sent, and then I see a misleading 404 page.

[Edit][URL]

I found the above article -- but while I can intercept the error I keep getting a connection reset in the browser on Request.Redirect() or Context.RewritePath() so it's really no better than the 404. Hmmm, actually that's with VS2008's debug server, not with IIS.

The Size Limits For Arrays And OrderBy()?

May 23, 2010

I'm very new to the whole thing and am slowly building a little app which takes a series of numbers into an array,orders them,does calculations and outputs the result.To this end I'm using arrays declared like:

string[] and the function OrderBy().

Eventually this little prog is intended to read text files containing perhaps thousands of values so I thought I should find out:

What are the size limits for such arrays?What are the size limits for OrderBy() ?
Is OrderBy() an effective sort routine for large arrays or does it get very slow?
I hope it is okay to ask these questions.I realise I could find out for myself as soon as I've got it to where it can upload and read a text file and process it...... but I'm not there yet.

Memory Limits And Application Pool Recycle?

Jun 22, 2010

my web applications app pool configuration is
PeriodicRestartMemory : 512000
PeriodicRestartPrivateMemory : 196608

although the virtual memory limit is higher than private memory, app pool is recycled with virtual memory limits exceeded errors in the event log (instead of private memory).

what is the reason for this? how could it exceed virtual memory limits before exceeding private memory limits? it seems that systems other allocations in virtual memory cause limits exceeded before applications private allocations exceed the limits, but what are those allocations of the system? or what is the root cause of this.

JQuery Validate Formatting Rules For Range Limits

Jan 25, 2011

I have a large table of text inputs for which a set of custom attributes are being created on the server side. These attributes included "min" and "max" which were used with the jQuery Validate plugin. Due to a change in the requirements (of course), we now have to update the attributes to a range type, however the Validate plugin isn't interpreting the formatting of the range rule correctly (or perhaps it's more accurate to say I'm not formatting the rule correctly) and now I have problems. The generated output for the input boxes looks like this:

<input type="text" producttype="CCC" code="ESTFEE" range="460, 500" class="currency required" id="txtEstFeeCCC" value="460.00" name="txtEstFeeCCC">

I've also tried the following:

<input type="text" producttype="CCC" code="ESTFEE" range="[460, 500]" class="currency required" id="txtEstFeeCCC" value="460.00" name="txtEstFeeCCC">

In either case, the message returned is either: enter a value between 4 and 6. or enter a value between NaN and 4 respectively. Neither of which has anything to do with the 460 - 500 range in question. The jQuery code calling the validate function is just the vanilla call:

$("#btnSave").click(function() {
validator.form();
...
});

How should an input attribute for jQuery Validate range be formatted so that the correct number range limit is displayed?

Forms Data Controls :: Conditional Control Based On Repeater Content?

Oct 8, 2010

I have a repeater control with a delete button on each row. I also have a link on the same page (not within the repeater) that I only want to be visible when the repeater contains at least one row.

My problem is that, when the delete button on the final row is clicked, this triggers a postback during which the ItemCommand event is called to process the delete click. However this event is processedafter the Page Load event in which I would normally render or not render the conditional link. So I don't know at the time I'm rendering the link whether the user has just deleted the last row.

Am I misunderstanding the chain of events or is there a better way of handling this? Could I, for example, determine from the Sender & e arguments available within the Page_Load event, that the postback has been triggered by clicking the delete button in the repeater? The only other way I can see of dealing with this is to force a second postback once the final row of the repeater has been deleted which seems like overkill.

C# - Nesting Repeater In Gridview: Hiding Gridview Row And Repeater Header If Data Is Not There In Repeater?

Apr 21, 2010

I have nested a repeater control in Gridview. Right now it is showing gridview rows and repeater header for every case(whether data is there or not for that particular grid view row in the repeater control). I want to hide the gridview row and repeater control header when there is no data present for that particular gridview row. That case I handled at code level by filtering the resulted data table.

Now the another problem I am facing: I have allowed the paging on the gridview i.e. pagesize 3. When page loads it works fine, but when I go to page 2 then it generates following error: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index

Below is the code to fill the grid, paging and fill repeater on rowdatabound event of grid.

Forms Data Controls :: ImageButton Inside A Repeater That Is In Another Repeater & Events?

Jan 18, 2010

I have a user control that displays a shopping cart in an ecommerce application.

The main cart display is a repeater that renders as a html table. In one of those table columns, there is another repeater to display people associated with the products int he cart (it's a repeater in case there is a line item >1 with multiple people).

I've added an ImageButton that I want to use to change the person associated with the item. At first, when I'd click on it I was getting this error:

Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation="true"/> in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation.

So as an experiment I disabled EventValidation on the page (not the control it's self) and now I do not get an error, but I also do not ever hit the breakpoint I set in the innermost repeater's ItemCommand event.

So I wonder how I might do this without disabling EventValidation, because this control will show up on multiple pages and we don't want to edit them all. Also, I'll need to know not only the repeater containing the control's row that the event came from but also the row index of the repeater containg this one. Is this possible?

Nested Repeater Show Data That Matches Parent Repeater?

Something similar to that.

row1 tour1
row2 tour 1
tour1 subtotal
row3 tour2
row4 tour2
subtotal
total

but this shows all the data in the nested repeater not the ones that match the parentrepeater fields for example tour,theme,dep7 should match in the child repeater

Forms Data Controls :: Hiding A Repeater Div Using A Link Outside The Repeater?

May 25, 2010

I'm so confused I wasn't even sure what to make the title so that it would make sense.

Here is what I have:

[code]...

I have links at the top of the page that are the letters A-Z. What I want to do is click on one of the letters, then show only the div IDs that start with that letter. I can't figure out how to do this since I'm dynamically creating the ID names. I had it set up nicely with Javascript and CSS, but the function call was inside the repeater. The layout is changed now, and I don't understand how to make the div ID available outside the repeater.

Forms Data Controls :: Show / Hide A Div In A Nested Repeater By Clicking On A Button Inside Parent Repeater?

Nov 12, 2010

what changed do I need to make to my code for it to achieve what I'm after.

At the moment I am getting a "cannot cast to type" error message with the below code.

I have also tried calling the ItemDataBound method in with the parent repeater tags and had no errors but when I clicked on the button it would just move back to the top of the page and would not hide or show any data. Also I have made the div style to none but the first record still shows its child but the rest don't.

How To Show / Hide A Panel Within A Repeater From A Button In The Repeater Itself

Apr 7, 2010

I have set up an asp repeater to go through and display a list of people based on input parameters. Within that repeater I have a repeater that displays specific details about each person. No problem so far.

However, my requirement is that I only display the names, with a plus/minus sign to the left of the name. Clicking on the plus sign will expand that person's information to show the details. Clicking the minus sign will collapse the detail info.

I have a panel set up within my primary repeater that encompasses the secondary repeater.

C# - Nested Repeater With Child Repeater In A User Control?

Feb 18, 2011

Edit: I have a working solution already - I would just like to know why my original attempt didn't work. My original attempt is the code below.

I'm using the approach I found here:[URL] 306154 to implement a nested Repeater. Each parent item has one or more children items (the point of having the nested Repeater) with a dropdown horizontally aligned to each child item. In an effort to re-use the nested part of the Repeater I wanted to develop that piece as a user control but couldn't get it to work. I am wondering if it is even possible and if so how?

Here is my user control apsx:

<asp:Repeater ID="NestedRepeater" runat="server">
....
<ItemTemplate>
<tr class="text" id="RepeaterItemRow" runat="server">
<td>
<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "Name") %>
</td>
<td>
</td>
<td>
</td>
<td>
</td>
<td>
</td>
<td>
</td>
</tr>
</ItemTemplate>

And here is my code behind for the user control. I noticed when I debugged NestedDataSource was null even though in the parent page load the data is there:

public DataSet NestedDataSource
{
get;
set;
}
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!IsPostBack)
{
NestedRepeater.DataSource = NestedDataSource;
NestedRepeater.DataBind();
}
}

In the parent Repeater in the `<ItemTemplate> I have:

<asp:RepUC ID="NestRep" runat="server" NestedDataSource='<%#((DataRowView)Container.DataItem).Row.GetChildRows("nestedrel") %>'>

And finally the page code behind:

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!IsPostBack)
{
BuildWBS();
}
}
private void BuildPage()
{
DataSet ds = new DataSet();
ds = DataAccessLayer.GetData("System");
ds.Relations.Add("nestedrel", ds.Tables[0].Columns["Id"], ds.Tables[1].Columns["ParentId"]);
ParentRepeater.DataSource = ds;
ParentRepeater.DataBind();
}

The page loads but nothing relating to the repeater appears on the screen. So, can you see anything wrong with what I have? Is the way I tried doing this even possible?

How To Access Repeater Item Template Controls Outside The Repeater

Feb 2, 2011

I am using a repater whose item template is having a dropdownlist. Now i want to access that dropdownlist from a button click event. Here is the code iam using :

protected void btn1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
foreach (RepeaterItem item in rptWord.Items)
{
DropDownList ddl1 = (System.Web.UI.WebControls.DropDownList)rptWord.FindControl("ddlWord");
}
}

But m getting ddl1 as null. For this i created a function which is as follows:

public void myFunction(object sender, RepeaterItemEventArgs e)
{
foreach (RepeaterItem item in rptWord.Items)
{
DropDownList la = (System.Web.UI.WebControls.DropDownList)e.Item.FindControl("ddlWord");
}
}

using this function iam able to access the repeater but i guess its not possible to call this function on button click event .
