SQL Reporting :: Troubleshooting No-data In Report?
Jun 11, 2010
Got an rdlc report that I'm running in sharepoint 2007. Works fine on the test server, shows no data on the prod server. Don't get any error message, just don't get any data. There is data in the database, and other pages in the app correctly access the database.
App is running from the in folder under the sharepoint site. I noticed a "failed to load app dll" message in event viewer, so i'm guessing there's some permissions issue possibly going on. App dll loads fine for when I hit other pages, however, i'm guessing since Report Viewer is running from the gac there may be a problem calling the partially trusted in dll?? I'm just guessing here. Like i said this app is working correctly on the test server, which has the same configuration - same os, same app, same web.config settings. Apparently something is different though.

Report viewer from SQL reporting services in VS 2008 report control If I create a new report in VS 2008 they have a .rdlc extension and work correctly.
I have some reports that I was using in SQL reporting services. Extensions are .rdl and want to get them to work with VS 2008.
I copied the rdl files and the .rdl.data files over to VS 2008 (SP1) project but when I go to select the report in the control it does not see the file (I assume it is looking for a .rdlc file)
I tried rename the file to .rdlc and loaded the file up and got
The report definition has an invalid target namespace [URL] which cannot be upgraded.
I see this
[URL]
[URL]
It says
"RDL files are fully compatible with the ReportViewer control runtime. However, RDL files do not contain some information that the design-time of the ReportViewer control depends on for automatically generating data-binding code. By manually binding data, RDL files can be used in the ReportViewer control."
But the link for how to manual bind the data is broken.

I'm a rookie at all this and need some insight from veterans.
I'm working on a web form that submits data to a database. I'm using C# as my code behind language and am using LINQ to SQL with a LINQ data source. I'm working in the code-behind page to format/concatenate the user's data before going into the database.
Everything looks like it's formatted and aligned correctly. I am not receiving any errors or warnings, but on submission none of my data gets entered into the database.
My question is... how should I troubleshoot or go about finding out what's keeping my data from being entered into the db.

Exporting Datasource results to excel not just report data.My datasource is a stored procedure that returns a lot of fields that are not on the report itself. I would like the entire result of dataset to export to an excel file if user chooses.

'm learning about reporting in VS2008 (no we haven't moved to 2010 yet!), and I like the idea of rdlc files because it seems you can deploy the report as part of a web app rather than mess around deploying it to a report server. Is this correct? We develop tiered apps that use LINQ to SQL, and the .dbml and LINQ queries are in a separate project to the web application. Also, depending on whether we are developing an internet or intranet web app, it will either reference that project directly, or call its methods via a WCF service. However I can't seem to hook up my rdlc to either. From what I've read, this could be because we create "web application" projects and not "web site" projects. So my question is, is it possible to create an rdlc report within a "web application" project and have it use either a business object or a WCF service as its data source? If I try and create a data source in my web app project, it simply creates an XSD, and don't know what to do with this! If I go through the report wizard, all I can do is choose a database data source (i.e. from what's listed in the VS2008 server explorer) - there is no option to choose an "object" or "service" data source, like you can when the rdlc resides in a report project.

I am wondering if the Microsoft Report Viewer control allows for display changes. Say for instance a user wants would like to see all the data requested then another time would like to toggle thru the pages of infomation. So does anyone know if the control allows for display changes from complete view to paginated viewing. I am using MS VS 2008 with ASP.NET 3.0.

I am using a reportviewer control to display some key reports on my page. These reports are RDLC reports and some of them have multiple tables in them each being fed by a separate datasource.
There are times when some datasets do not return any values. When this happens these table show up as blank with just the headers in them.
Is there a way to hide a table, when there is no data returned by a Dataset (or the filter) on the table?
At the least, can a message "No Rows Returned be Displayed" when there is no data?

This is regarding ASP.Net (VB) 2.0 and SQL Server 2008. My project's (there is only one in my solution) has a "Start Action" set to a "Specific Page" (..FormsfrmMain.aspx). Occasionally (though not always) a large number of connections (30+) will be opened prior to the frmMain.PreInit event. These connections stay open for quite some time. I am closing all of my connections with extreme prejudice. In my "finally" clause of my try...catch I have myconnection.close. Immediately after the "End Try" I have myconnection.dispose (redundant, I know). I have accounted for all connections. I placed a breakpoint on frmMain.PreInit and then (sometimes) a large number of connections (used SSMS to run sp_who and sp_who2) will have just opened. What would open a large number of connections prior to the starting page's preinit event? I am closing (and then disposing) all of my connections. I thought that I must be missing a myconnection.close in the "finally" clause, but I have looked repeatedly and cannot find anywhere that a connection is open and then not closed. Also, I do not believe that I have even opened a connection prior to the frmMain's preinit event.
