SQL Server :: Concatenating Ntext Datatype Columns?
Dec 6, 2010
i have the below query where MessageText column is of ntext datatype..whe n i run the below query it is giving me the below error. Error :The data types ntext and varchar are incompatible in the add operator.
select li.LookUpPageInfoId,
li.PageMessageID,
li.PathMessageID,
li.IsActive,
m.MessageID,
(select messagetext from messages where messageid=pagemessageid and channelid=m.ChannelID)+'/'+
m.MessageText as TotalText,
m.ChannelID
from
LookUpPageInfo as li left outer join
Messages as m on m.MessageID=li.PathMessageID and li.IsActive=1
Can some one suggest me how to concatenate the ntext column....but the above works good if the column MessageText is of nvarchar(max) datatype.

Possible Duplicate:
Are there any disadvantages to always using nvarchar(MAX)?
Is there a general downside by chosing 'ntext' as column type instead of a type that contains chars but with a limited max size like 'char' or 'varchar'?
I'm not sure whether a limited column size is applyable to all my colums. Therefore I would use 'ntext' for all columns containing text. Might this lead to problems in the future?
(I'm using Linq-To-SQL in a ASP.net Webforms application)

I need to concatenate several columns of a table into a single value, then show that value in an asp dropdownlist. The SQL code I'm issuing is as follows:
SELECT UserID, CustomerNum, UserName + ' - ' + UserAddress + ',' + UserCity + ' ' + UserState AS UserInfo
FROM Users
WHERE (CustomerNum = @CustomerNum)
ORDER BY UserName
I then set 'UserInfo' as the text field in the dropdownlist.This generally works, except occasionally one of the columns in the database is null (for example, UserState). When that happens, the entire concatenation is null, and I get an empty entry in the dropdownlist.
Is there something in SQLServer that will allow me to ignore those NULL results, or will I have to code something up in the DataBind event?

adding data from more than one columns of a table in drop down list but not concatening them.
Like a table having columns Station_1 , Station_2 , Station_3. All these columns having place names.
Now I want to list the distinct station/place names from each columns Station_1, Station_2 and Station_3 in my drop down list.
How to do this I serched everywhere in but not found the solution..

A variety of files (pdf, images, etc.) are stored in a ntext field on a MS SQL Server. I am not sure what type is in this field, other than it shows question marks and undefined characters, I am assuming they are binary type.
The script is supposed to iterate through the rows and extract and save these files to a temp directory. "filename" and "contenttype" are given, and "data" is whatever is in the ntext field.
[code].....
This works, but the file should be saving to the server instead of popping up save-as dialog. I am not sure if there is a way to save the response to file.

So I have a ntext column in a table with a combination of large random data (hence why ntext in the first place) and sometimes contains a uniqueidentifier.
I need to find and delete rows based on the uniqueidentifier.
I can't do the comparison with it being ntext, but I changed it to varchar(max) in my dev enviornment and it let me do it without any warnings and I can now do my comparison like I want to, so all is good.
I just want to make sure I'm not changing any of my large random data by changing the data type.

I'm using Cute Editor for ASP.NET for the first time, and it's occasionally refusing to insert or update a record. Basically the records are just composed of a bunch of HTML and text. So far I can't detect a pattern to the problem and I'm wondering about my data type.
I tried VARCHAR(MAX), NVARCHAR(MAX), and NTEXT, doesn't seem to fix it.
So what is the best SQL data type for HTML?
And could that be causing CuteEditor to refuse to insert/update records? Or something else?

<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource2" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT TestID, Title, Description FROM aspnet_Test WHERE (Date

<asp:Parameter Name="testdate" DbType="Date" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
and the result should filter on the basis of testdate

testday = System.DateTime.Now.Day.ToString();
testmonth = System.DateTime.Now.Month.ToString();
testyear = System.DateTime.Now.Year.ToString();
testdate.Text = testyear.ToString() + "-" + testmonth.ToString() + "-" + testday.ToString();

i need to save multiple documents stored in SQL server as Image type to disk.
What i want to do is "backup" all files in a table (column) to disk, zip them and Response.TransmitFile(FilePath) to client.
I could use C# ot VB but that would require a lot of connections to database or a lot of server memory and i don't want that, becauze there are a lot of files to be saved Since SQL can write files to disk i was thinking about saving those files to disk directly from sql. Something like when u're doing a backup

I'm having a strange behavior in my .aspx page. I'm internationalizing some pages, but as I want to keep only entities or value object in my resource I want to have a key-value like:
(pt-br)
CITY - Cidade
STATE - Estado
But when I list the entities, I want to put the " : " at end. Like:
<asp:Label ID="LabelCity" runat="server" Text="<%$ Resources:Localizacao, CITY %>:"></asp:Label>
But, if I put the " : " after the resource in text property, the page only shows " : ".
My simple solution is put after all definition of label, but I think this too wrong:
<asp:Label ID="LabelCity" runat="server" Text="<%$ Resources:Localizacao, CITY %>"></asp:Label>:

I have been led to believe that the performance benefits of using StringBuilder over normal concatenation means that you should always use stringbuilder when concatenating more than 2 strings. However when I test them this does not seem to be the case. Take these 2 methods
public void TestMethod5()
{
for (int i = 0; i < 1000; i++)
{
string t = string.Empty;
t = "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd" + "dddddddd"; ;
}
}
public void TestMethod6()
{
for (int i = 0; i < 1000; i++)
{
StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
sb.Append("dddddddd");
string t = string.Empty;
t = sb.ToString();
}
}
TestMethod5 takes 0.03 milliseconds so complete but TestMethod6 takes 1.43 milliseconds What is going on?
