SQL Server Express 2008 Using (local) In Connection String

May 18, 2010

Is it possible to connect to a SQL Server Express 2008 database in ASP.NET with a server name of (local) like "server=(local);integrated security=SSPI;database=DBNAME"? I'm working with another developer on a project and it's getting annoying having to have 2 different version of web.config because he is using SQL Server 2008 and (local) works, but I can't seem to get it to work with SQL Server 2008 Express locally. The database is located on the same computer as the .NET code in case that matters.

SQL Server :: Connection String To Connect With 2008?

Sep 23, 2010

be it's a wrong place to ask the following question. Sorry for that. Our hosting provider has recently upgraded their database server from Sql Server 2005 to 2008 and I'm getting errors to connect with remote server from my development machine. Error Message "Invalid connection". Tried to find solution on net but couldn't find it.I'm using .Net 1.1. Though we've updated versions 2.0,3.5 & 4.0 but due to some certain circumstances I've no way to update it. It's a web based project. The following connection string works fine for Sql Server 2000 & 2005 but not for 2008.<add key="ConnectionString" value="Data Source=Remote Server's domain name;Initial Catalog=database name;User ID=user name;Password=surround;Persist Security Info=True;Pooling=false;Connect Timeout=45;" />Here Remote Server's domain name indicates to remote db server like: test.mysite4now.comdatabase name for example: test_surrounduser name like test_surroundpassword: surround. Can anyone inform me what's wrong with the above connection string to connect to Sql Server 2008.

Configuration :: SQL Server 2008 - Can't Get Connection String Right After Many Attempts

Mar 8, 2011

I have a new server that I am attempting to deply my very first asp.net website on. I have installed SQL 2008 r2 and loaded my DB on it. I am able to access the server/DB through Visual Stuidio. At least I know i can call it from the webserver to my local PC.

For some reason I just cant get my we.config's connection strong right. It might even be the <provider> info that I have wrong. I am just too inexperienced to know for sure. My Web.Config is very short so I will post all of it here.

-- Code is posted at the end --

How do I modify my local project to use my webservers DB instead of the standard SQL Express DB? The only connection string

Machine.Config that points to the sqlexpress database. Again I lack the experience to know how to do this. I am using Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 r2 on my local pc.

Configuration :: Encrypting The Connection String In Web.config On Windows Server 2008

Mar 30, 2010

When I try to encrypt the "connectionStrings" section in the web.config file of my asp.net web application on Windows Server 2008, I'm getting the following error:

Administration utility (2.0.50727) to install and uninstall ASP.NET on the local machine. Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Note: This utility has limited capabilities on the Windows Vista operating system. It is recommended that you use the "Turn on or off Windows features" option of the "Programs" component of Control Panel to install or remove ASP.NET. It is also recommended that you use the IIS Manager component or the Appcmd.exe tool to configure ASP.NET applications.

The above information is followed by the list of valid options to aspnet_regiis.exe.

The command that I've used is:

aspnet_regiis.exe -pef "connectionStrings" "C:Usersuser1DocumentsMywebsite" -prov "DataProtectionConfigurationProvider"

But, the same command is working fine when used on a Windows Server 2003 machine. The problem is occurring only on Windows Server 2008 with IIS7.

Visual Studio :: Upgrading SQL Server Express 2005 To SQL Server Express 2008?

Jan 8, 2011

After I installed Visual Studio 2008 Standard edition, then I upgrade "SQL Server Express 2005" to "SQL Server Express 2008 SP2". Process upgrading SQL Server Express 2008 was going succesfully (none of the process was fail).

But when I create a New Website I could not add a new item "SQL Server Database" into my website file. Because Visual Studio always rejected any new "SQL Server Database" by giving message below (underline):

This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported.

DataSource Controls :: Connecting To SQL Server In Visual Studio 2008 Using Code - Error: 25 - Connection String Is Not Valid

Feb 2, 2010

Background: I use SQL server 2005 developer edition and visual studio 2008. Visual studio 2008 is running on a local machine with Vista business edition. SQL server is running on a remote server using Windows server 2003. Both computers are within the same domain.

Problem: First, I used the server explorer to connect to the SQL server. Everything works as desired. Then I write code to do the same thing. I keep getting the following error message:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid)

However, I used the exactly identical connection string as the one used in the server explorer. So connection string should not be the problem. In addition, I tried the test code in MSDN, which tells whether my domainusername can flow the network. It turns out the user name is fine. I also went to the SQL server management studio and found the login for my computer is NVCWeihao while my computer login name is NVCweihao. I am wondering if this uppercase letter really affects the connection.

.Net Connection With SQL Server Express?

Feb 22, 2011

My set up is as follows

IIS + SQL Server Express running on the same machine.

SQL Server Express has named pipe connections.

IIS hosts an ASP.Net website(v3.5)

ASP.Net site has web config entry to database using integrated security. In regard to this, how are the connections between the ASP.Net app. and SQL Server express handled? Does each user connect using the same login to SQL Express (think its NETWORK-SERVICE)? If 2 people hit the same web page at the same time how many connections are opened to SQL Express? Is it up to the setting in connection pooling? E.g. if connection pooling is set to 10 then in this example 2 connections are opened?Or is it that only one connection is used and users must wait for the previous user's webpage to finish all database operations before their request can be processed.

Visual Studio :: Publishing Website And Windows Server 2008 IIS Setup?

Jan 26, 2010

I have created a web app using Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition and have come to the point where I need to publish the site onto my server (which is running window server 2008). I found that the publish function is not limited in the express edition, so published the app to a local file and FTP'd the contents across to my server. I then setup a website through the servers IIS manage and pointed it to the folder containing the FTP'd files.

My question is, how do I run the app? Do I need to point to a specific file?

I have tried to view a number of the files in browser directly from the IIS but keep getting the same standard connection error i.e. "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

I have never used IIS Manager before and I can't find a resource which gives me a step by step guide to setting up a new site which has been created by Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition, are there any config changes needed.
