I can't believe my eyes it's so hard to do just that ! Why can't I use MS Access instead of SQL Server Express ? So since I'm stucked with SQL Server Express, how can I make it work on my dedicated IIS 7 Server on Windows 2008 ?
I have copied under the root directory of the server. The website works until I try to login then I get:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server
how to deploy this simple example used by Microsoft or can I ?
Update: in case it does matter I have installed SQL Server 2008 Express Advance Services Edition.

I have created on my local machine with targetframework 4 in visual studio a simple website using the default template (the one with css problem solved here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3897781/google-maps-api-in-asp-net-masterpage-why-it-stays-blank)I uploaded it to my IIS 7 server which was first configured for .NET 2 so in web.config I deleted the line
<compilation debug="false" targetFramework="4.0" />
so that it can run on .NET 2.Until then that was fine.Then I edited in ISS7 my website to use .NET 4. When testing the site again, I got this error:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path.I hadn't told you that I didn't install any sql server yet so this message may be normal but why didn't I get it with .NET 2 ? Could I configure something in .NET 4 so that this error is ignored like on .NET 2 ?

In fact, I DO NOT want to ask a question but to share one solution to this. One cause of this problem is you did not register your sql express on iis.I installed .net 3.5 sp1, then ran aspnet_iis -i, then installed sql express 2005 advanced. Yes, here came the notorious alert. So, I ran aspnet_regiis again and everything is OK.Run aspnet_regiis before you have installed sql express.

Is it possible to choose a specific database that will be used with the entity framework? At this time, I use the connection string in the Web.Config as database authentication.
I have twelve databases, each of them has the same structure and the same stored procedure.
There is one database for each client. When a client wants to login into the system, he needs to choose his database name from a listbox.
I would like to create a dynamic connection string which will include the database name chosen by the client.

we have an existing ASP.net application that is undergoing expansion. The new functionality is all written in Silverlight 4. As part of that expansion I gutted all the old Linq to SQL and put Entity Framework 4 into place. To do this I created a standard .net Class Library and added my edmx files there. Naturally, the business entities created by this cannot be used in Silverlight. So I created a Silverlight Class Library and added all the business entities to that Silverlight Class Library as linked files. I changed the name space to be the same.
So I have the following assembly / namespaces
Company.Project.Dal.csproj / Company.Project.Entities (.net 4 class library)
Company.Project.Entities.csproj / Company.Project.Entities (SL4 class library)
With this architecture I was able to share my business entities with my SL enabled web services, my asp.net projects, my silverlight projects. Really it's a beautiful thing.
Once this was done I added "message" classes to Company.Project.Dal and again shared them with the other entites using linked files. These messages are things like MyObjectRequest; they are classes that have properties that can set to the ID of the record in the database you want to get, a search string for filtering by last name, first name, etc. (This is in the style of the Web Service Factory if you're familiar with that.)
Finally I turned the whole message into a generic using a base class called EntityRequest
[code]...
I corrected this error and everything went well for a week until I had to make my first change to the service interface. I added a new operation contract, clicked the handy Update Service Reference on my client and boom.

I just installed sql server 2005 to my pc and when i try to log in to the server instance i get an error log in failed for user xxx (error 18456).I browse to the server instance and i keep getting the same error even though i chose windows authentication option during the installation.
I restarted the service for the sql server instance (which is running).The only problem i can think about is a problem with permissions but again there should not be any problem there because i logged in as administrator

I have a database table with a list of locations. I need to generate addresses for each of these automatically when a user provides a minor amount of input.
The address is a 12 digit numerical witch looks like this;
702200100105
Broken down as follows;
7 is static
022 is selectable as 022 or 076
001 would be a routing reference automatically incrementing
001 would begin the list of address range
05 is static
The user would need to select the list of locations and then provide either the 022 or 076. The background programming would need to build the list of addresses and then finally update the database table with this information.
