SQL Server :: Converting String To Datetime To Shortdate?
Sep 14, 2010
I have a field (varchar) field that holds date. Some data was transferred to this column but the transferred data was a timestamp (datetime in the format of say 10/26/2009 4:54:13 AM). Now, I need to modify the new table to only contain 10/26/2009. How can I write a statement to delete the time leavin gonly 10/26/2009? I can use trim function but the # of characters vary as the date might be 1/10/2010 12:50:00 PM, etc?

I am trying to figure out the best way to convert a string object into a DateTime with only using the year. I have something like:
[Code]....
But it is still giving a "String was not a recognized as a valid DateTime." In the full context, I have a webpage with a formview on it and within the formview is a TextBox control that is taking a user input such as "1999" then an ObjectDataSource picks it up and runs it through a BLL. And within the BLL is where I am trying to convert it before it gets inserted into the database.

I have a maskededit extender
Code:
TargetControlID="dateTextBox"
Mask="99/99/9999 99:99"
MessageValidatorTip="true"
OnFocusCssClass="MaskedEditFocus"
OnInvalidCssClass="MaskedEditError"
MaskType="DateTime"
[Code] ....
So the input format looks like this 12/23/2012 12:12 AM
And I would like to convert this as datetime so i tried to do
Code:
Dim ab As DateTime
ab = DateTime.Parse(dateTextBox.Text)
But it's showing me an error
Code:
at System.DateTimeParse.Parse(String s, DateTimeFormatInfo dtfi, DateTimeStyles styles)
at System.DateTime.Parse(String s)
at admin_trackadd.saveButton_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e)

Using Entity Framework with MVC2, I have a series of date textboxes, that I want to display data from the model in a short date format, but I have to use Html.TextBoxFor in order for the update code to work (Having tried using HTML.Textbox the data never gets saved to the model).
<%: Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Item.Date, String.Format("{0:d}", Model.Item.Date))%>
I've tried manipulating the string format expression, and have added metadata to a partial class mapped to the Entity Framework model class, however still I get the following populating my textboxes at form render:
'01/01/2011 00:00:00' rather than '01/01/2011'

using sql server 2005. I am working with an existing database field and there is a field where the string in this format: YYYYMMDD, for example 05/16/2002 is displayed as:
<example>
20020516
</example>
anyways I am trying to convert that string to a date like so:
[Code]....
however when I try to do this I am getting the following error
<ERROR>
Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime.
</ERROR>
does anyone know a good solution for this? I just want to convert the string to datetime so I can use the value in my WHERE clause.

how I can get around the following error with the following code?
[Code]....
Error: Msg 8169, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier. As you can probably tell, the datatypes are: m.UserId = uniqueidentifier l.System_User_ID = varchar(256) I was hoping the casting of one to the other would solve the issue, but it doesn't. How can I re-code this? I see from other forums it would probably be best to set all these fields to uniqueidentifier, but would prefer not to at this stage as it will involve changing quite a bit throughout the whole site!

I am confuse in understanding date storing in sql server and retrieving it in C# and converting date formats. guide me on the following basics:
1. In SQL Server datashould be stored as datetime or as string ?
2. To get date in different format (in SQL Server) why we convert it in string, is there no way that date can be obtained as date but in different formats ?
3. For getting date in some particular format is it better to convert date in format from SQL Server or it should be converted in C# ?
4. On C# end what should data type to hold date ?
5. In C# what should data type (string or date) if date is coming from database ?
6. In C# Cant we format date when its data type is date ?

I would like to know how to format a string date so it can be inserted in a DataTime field in MS SQL 2005 using ASP.NET 3.5 with C#.
I have a form with 3 Dropdownlists; 1 for selecting days(1 to 31), 1 for month (1 to 12) and 1 for years (say 1980 to 2010).
When the form is submitted, I want to join the selected values from the dropdownlist as a string ( say dd/mm/yyyy) and insert that into a datetime field in a database table.
I am using the following code, but I get the error message "String was not recognized as a valid DateTime." when i submit my form.
[Code]....
