In SQL Server Data Should Be Stored As Datetime Or As String

Apr 10, 2010

I am confuse in understanding date storing in sql server and retrieving it in C# and converting date formats. guide me on the following basics:

1. In SQL Server datashould be stored as datetime or as string ?

2. To get date in different format (in SQL Server) why we convert it in string, is there no way that date can be obtained as date but in different formats ?

3. For getting date in some particular format is it better to convert date in format from SQL Server or it should be converted in C# ?

4. On C# end what should data type to hold date ?

5. In C# what should data type (string or date) if date is coming from database ?

6. In C# Cant we format date when its data type is date ?

SQL Server :: Datetime Format Checking In Stored Procedure

Nov 2, 2010

is a way of proofing a stored procedure in terms of the datetime localisation. For example, in the C# we may use the web.config or machine.config to set the application's localised date settings:

<pre>globalization uiCulture="en" culture="en-GB"></pre>

This helps when we do a date comparison in a static class of ours to return a certain rating factor. Is there an equivalent way of us checking whether or not the date we pass into the stored procedure is in e.g. UK format and will be compared against our dates in the UK format too? We have 2 datetime columns, DateEffectiveFrom and DateEffectiveTo in our table and we use those dates to compare with the date passed in to return the relevant data.

Now, I need to modify the new table to only contain 10/26/2009. How can I write a statement to delete the time leavin gonly 10/26/2009? I can use trim function but the # of characters vary as the date might be 1/10/2010 12:50:00 PM, etc?

Nov 22, 2010

I would like to know how to format a string date so it can be inserted in a DataTime field in MS SQL 2005 using ASP.NET 3.5 with C#.

I have a form with 3 Dropdownlists; 1 for selecting days(1 to 31), 1 for month (1 to 12) and 1 for years (say 1980 to 2010).

When the form is submitted, I want to join the selected values from the dropdownlist as a string ( say dd/mm/yyyy) and insert that into a datetime field in a database table.

I am using the following code, but I get the error message "String was not recognized as a valid DateTime." when i submit my form.

I am developing a C# VS 2008 / SQL Server 2005 Express website application. I have tried some of the fixes for this problem but my call stack differs from others. And these fixes did not fix my problem. What steps can I take to troubleshoot this?

Forms Data Controls :: Formatting Date In Textbox - Getting Error "String Was Not Recognized As A Valid DateTime"

Jan 7, 2011

I am having trouble formatting the date on a textbox I get the error above if I don't enter the date in MM/DD/YY format in the textbox. I am also using this in a FormView so I can't format it or don't know how to in the code behind so if there is a way to format it in design view that would be preferable. Does anyone have any ideas on how I would do any of this.

Converting String To DateTime

Sep 11, 2010

I am trying to figure out the best way to convert a string object into a DateTime with only using the year. I have something like:

[Code]....

But it is still giving a "String was not a recognized as a valid DateTime." In the full context, I have a webpage with a formview on it and within the formview is a TextBox control that is taking a user input such as "1999" then an ObjectDataSource picks it up and runs it through a BLL. And within the BLL is where I am trying to convert it before it gets inserted into the database.
