I do not want to install Excel on theserver and instead want to utilize the Excel installed on the user's computer for this purpose as every user's computer is expected to have Excel installed. Is this possible to do? How to do this?

Dec 27, 2010I have a web application (ASP.NET 3.5) that allows the users to upload their own excel sheet. This sheet contains information about items that needs to be inserted to SQL Server 2005.
I already have this functionality, however, it's very slow (it takes almost 20 minutes to finish the request). I need a better way to handle this problem.
The sheet contains information about an item. These properties will be inserted into multiple tables for example (Books, Authors, Titles ... etc ...).
What I'm currently doing is the following:
The user uploads the file. The application opens the file. Read each row and update the database accordingly.
I'm using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel
Edit: I'm working with 10.000+ rows per sheet.

Jul 23, 2010I have a large dataset (35,000+ rows) that I need to export to excel and then let the user download. I have done this the conventional way (with a gridview), but the data has grown, causing a OutOfMemoryException on the web server.
So I thought, would it not be better if I can export the data into excel on the sql server, and then transfer this data to the web server.
Note that this is not a one-off job. This will be ran regularly (twice a month), but the user. Hence I need something that the user can initiate.

I have also implimented a Export to Excel function. The Export to Excel works by itself if the Search in Grid function is not included in the footer.The Export to Excel function errors when trying to render the Grid for the export. Is there a better way to incorporate both functions and accomplish the same thing? Am I missing something simple?

I have searched a bit and got my page to export a data table to a tab delimted file and also used the HtmlTextWriter to take the data from a gridview. However I am trying to find something with a little more control I think without losing me : ). I would like to be able to export directly to excel with out displaying it on the page and also have a couple different datasets export to the same excel file with multiple worksheets.

Set it up exactly the same, but have it export to Excel rather than print, probably using some other type of object than RemoteReportPrinter.
