Security :: Compare The Hashed Answer In Database To The One Typed In Textfield In Form?

Jan 15, 2011

So as the title suggested, I'm currently trying to compare the hashed answer in my database against the answer typed in the textfield by the user in the form.

I thought of hashing the answer in the textfield typed by the user first, and after that compare this newly hashed answer to the one in the database (which is already hashed). But when I typed in the SAME answer (before hashing) and hashed it to get the hashed value, by right the 2 hashes (in web form and database) should match? Somehow, it didn't. And I can't seem to get security answer right anymore (even though I typed the SAME security answer).

This is the code behind the button:

[Code]....

I tried in another way too, but still the same thing.

Security :: Convert Existing User Database From Hashed To Encrypted

Aug 12, 2010

I've taken over a website which has around 3000 users registered using the standard asp.net membership provider on a SQL database. When the website was set up there were a lot of gaps in the system and we have a lot of tidying up to do of users with the same email addresses etc and invalid addresses so i'm just starting to look at how i can wrap all of this up and make administering the user accounts easier.

At the moment the account passwords are stored in "Hashed" format set in the web.config and obviously this doesn't allow for password retrieval. I want to know whether there is a way of converting all of these passwords from a hashed format to an encrypted format thus allowing me to create a password recovery page that doesn't then send the user a new password which is quite often something like "a*ns7#<3lx"

Ideally i'd like to convert all of these if that is possible so that I do a much simpler password retrieval system. If this is not possible can you tell me how i go about setting the passwordreset value not to contain all sorts of non-alpha/numberic characters?

Web Forms :: Want To compare A User-entered value On a Web Form against An Array Of Existing Values From The Database

Apr 7, 2010

I want to compare a user-entered value on a Web form against an array of existing values from the database, and do so on blur. If match, then show error. Scenario is to stop user from needlessly filling out other fields if this record has already been entered.

how to trigger this? What parts are client-side, what parts are server-side? Can I do it without Javascript?

Security :: How To Compare Login Information With Database

Jul 27, 2010

I have created a login form through VS 2008 using C#. There are 5 different aspx pages in my application.

1)Default.aspx: It contains only a hyperlink to direct the user to login.aspx page.

2)Login.aspx: This page has texbox for Username and Password, sign in button, textbox for displaying error and hyperlink (Create an Account) if the user does not created an account yet.

Here is Login.aspx code:

[Code]....

Now, I want to do following with my application.

If the user already has an account, he can put his username and password and click on the sign in button. If the username is existed in databse, application should compare the user input with database and if both are matched then the application should redirect the user to "welcome.aspx". If username does not exist it should show that Username does not exist.

JQuery Form Submit Handler Doesn't Trigger When TextField Changes By Watin In MVC App?

Aug 20, 2010

I am writing Watin test in MVC Asp.net app. I mvc app, all input are wrpped with form and every time an input or textarea is changed their form gets submitted by jquery like code below:

$("textarea", context).change(function() {
$(this).parents('form:first').submit();
});

This is perfect when changes are done by keyboard. However this doesn't trigger the form submit when input/textarea are changed by Watin TypeText() method. I tried to call Change() and Blur() events by Watin and also tried PressTab() with no luck.

Security :: How To Manually Check A User's Security Question Answer

Jan 30, 2011

I simply want to know how to manually check if the value a user has provided for the answer to their security question matches their current answer on record. I want to use the build in support of the membership and membershipuser objects.

I see that via the passwordrecovery control that the actual answer can be returned. However I am currently not using this control and it would take a good bit to integrate it as it does not meet our user's requirements.

In a worst case scenario, getting the actual answer (like the passwordrecovery control does) and manually checking it in our application would be acceptable.

A best case scenario is some sort of API where I can pass in the user name and the answer to their security question that was provided and simply get an indication of whether answer was correct or not.

Security :: PasswordRecovery Not Completing Security Answer Verification?

Jul 12, 2010

I'm using asp.net's built-in membership provider with security question-and-answer enabled for password recovery against a SQL Server 2005 db. For some users, this works fine and they're able to receive their passwords. For others, and it's not clear what separates the two groups, the security answer is never properly processed. It doesn't matter if the answer is correct or incorrect, the page merely reloads without confirming or denying the request.As for events, VerifyingAnswer is being triggered, but not AnswerLookupError (if answer is incorrect) or SendingMail (if answer is correct). I ran a SQL trace during one instance, and the aspnet_Membership_GetUserByName stored procedure is being called, but nothing else gets called after. I would expect that aspnet_Membership_GetPassword would be called, which passes the security answer as a parameter, but it isn't.

Security :: How To Change Hashed Passwords To Clear Text

Jan 3, 2010

I setup a website to use hashed passwords with the membership provided by Asp.net. I'm looking for a way to convert all passwords to clear text. Hashed passwords are overkill for this site and many users can't figure out how to cut and paste the complex temporary password when they request a forgotten password. I understand that you can't retrieve a hashed password.

Security :: Migrating Existing Cleat Text Users Password To Hashed Password Membership Provider?

Sep 9, 2010

I had been trying to solve this but there is a hidden key i wish someone point me to.

I had a simple membership database with users in first the Membership Provider configured for clear password to retrieve the original password .

Now a new requirement say that the password must be hashed and reset .

I configure the Membership password to hash , and Implemented the Reset Password Module.

My problem is as follow.

If the user is new registered user with the new configuration the password and the security answer is hashed.

also when I go and reset the password it continue to be hashed.

Now I thought that with new configuration if any previous user with clear text configuration , If he use the password Reset module , because my configuration now is hashed , I expected that the new password and security answer will be hashed . what happen is old user continue in clear text even if the configuration is hashed. so If I had new users everything is fine.

old users Membership Provider somehow know they had been stored in clear text and it keep change password and security answer in clear text . If I delete this user and create it , Membership Provider understand that everything will be hashed. I need to know how it know this , I need to migrate users not to delete and recreate users .

Also if there are no solution for that , I wish Microsoft Consider it in future cause it is a real user scenario, that can happen imagine a business system that related to membership user Id , deleting users and recreate them is not a solution .

C# - How To Post Form From View Strongly Typed To ViewModel?

Mar 31, 2011

I have a view model as such:

public class MyViewModel
{
public MyObject myObject{ get; set; }
public List<MyList> myList{ get; set; }
}

I have a view with a form strongly typed to MyViewModel This view allows you to enter values for the properties of MyObject, as well as create a list of MyList objects. The List part works fine although I thought that would be the more difficult of the two. Assuming MyObject has a property Description I create a textbox to enter the value as such:

@Html.EditorFor(x => x.myObject.Description);
The text box renders with an id of MyObject_Description...The problem is when I post this to my controller action, MyObject does not get bound at all(althought the list items do as they recieve the appropriate IDs of "MyViewModel_MyList[guid].myListValue")
What am I doing wrong here??
EDIT: more info
The first line of the view is:
@model MyApp.ViewModels.MyViewModel
And the Action method:
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Create(MyViewModel myViewModel)
{
}
I am passing a new MyViewModel into the partial view to begin...
public ActionResult Create()
{
MyViewModel model = new MyViewModel();
return PartialView(model);
}
EDIT 2
Ok When I render my partial view that contains the forms I call :
@{Html.RenderAction("Create", "MyController");}
this is called from within a View of type @model IEnumerable<MyApp.Models.MyObject>
(this view displays a list of currently existing MyOjects, and at the bottom the partial is rendered to allow the user to add another MyObject to the DB)

Strongly-typed Or Weakly-typed Binding In Codebehind In Front End?

Feb 23, 2010

So my question is more in relation to what people consider to be the best practice and why:

I've been dropping literals into pages and repeaters and binding them in code behind for a while. Is this considered bad practice?

ie:

ASPX Page:

<asp: Literal id="litTextToInsert" runat="Server" />

Code Behind:

litTextToInsert.Text = objData.MyText;

OR (repeater):

[code]....

I personally dont like doing this as i find it makes it harder for me to know if someone changed the field name, or mis typed it during development - the other way you won't know until the page loads.

With the strongly typed version if something changes in your DAL etc the build will break - letting me know I've messed up.

Why do so many people appear to use weakly typed code in ASP.Net (in examples, MVC, etc)?
Am i missing something?

MVC Strongly Typed Versus Dynamically Typed Views

Given the benefits of using strongly typed views to eliminate typed errors and the use of lambda expressions why would one use a dynamically typed view? When I use them I don't feel as safe as with strongly typed views. Am I missing something? Is there a special use for them?
