Security :: Connections Betweeb Users And Any Othere Data?

Feb 19, 2011

i'm a real beginner, so my questions may sound rather stupid but i did not google anything on it.

Suppose I create a standard mvc 3 application having an authentification system. There are the questions:

1. As I understood the information about users is stored in App_Data folder. Is there a way to store it database? obviously, there should be one,

but i cant figure it out .

2. Suppose I want to link a user with entities belonging to him (like articles in a "shared" blog, photos, whatever), How do I do this?

the standard MS tutorial (MVC music store) doesnt cover neither of these questions which are rather basic.

Security :: Data Connections Strings / Web Config?

Apr 4, 2010

I am helping a club create a site that has a password protected "members only area". I have never done anything password protected. I used VWD and created the user names and passwords. Apparently using the AspNetSqlProvider. The site and password protected area work great when tested locally. The problem is when the site is uploaded to the hosting company, the login area will not work. I found that I had to create an SQL database in the appropriate area of the hosting company. The login still won't work. I am thinking that I have to create a connection string in the web config file. The problem is - when I tried that the site wouldn't work when I tested it locally. I really need lots of help with this part.

Security :: By-pass Authentication For Intranet Connections?

Feb 26, 2010

The company I work for has a web app running on IIS that has been strictly internal (uses a port other than 80 not accessible to the internet). Recently we started using mobile devices and need to access it over the internet. So I simply made it part of our company web site and secured that portion using forms authentication. The problem is that it is also our home page in the office and it is a pain to be logging in several times a day. In fact some of the staff are irate they have to login in at all when at their workstations. Is there a way to by-pass authentication when the referrer is http://servername/ and still enforce it when accessed via http://www.domainname.com?

Security :: SQL Express Handles Membership/Roles Connections Differently To The Full Versions Of SQL?

Jan 15, 2010

I have incorporated the asp.net membership and roles feature in my web app on my local dev setup that uses SQL 2008 Developer edition, all works as it should.

My remote system uses SQL 2005 express and I went through the process of creating the ASPNET membership tables via the "aspnet_regsql" command to my remote target database. I then created a few users, adjusted my app connection strings accordingly and uploaded.

My login page uses the "login" server control and when I try and login using credentials from one of the previously created users I get a "Your login attempt was not successful. try again." error. I know the users are in the DB as I can see then via the SQL Management studio on the remote DB. I have triple checked the username/passwords and I am definately entering the correct info. The connection strings are correct as the initial page renders content from another table in the DB. I am getting no errors.

My best guess at the moment is that SQL Express handles Membership/Roles connections differently to the full versions of SQL?

Security :: How To Stop Users Accessing Other's Data

Jul 12, 2010

We have a few scenarios which mean users can see other users data if they're on the same machine.

Scenario 1

Login User A Browse to forms with perosnal data Logout User A Login User B Either hit back button until you reach User A's personal data or.. Use browser history to jump directly to user A's personal data.

Scenario 2

Login User A Browse to forms with personal data Close browser New Browser, Use history to go directly to User A's data.

The 2nd one was caused by the browser displaying the page from its cache, so for that one, I added the following to the web.config..

[Code]....

[Code]....

which seems to do the trick, but I need to know how to fix the first part and whether the web.config changes are all that's needed to clear any cache.

Security :: Trying To Store Users Full Name And Other Data?

Jan 13, 2010

this is the ecenario, we're developing a web application in vb.net using vwd 05, and everthing has been great so far, we've recevied a lot ideas from the guys on this great forum. now we're facing a problem relating with usernames and userids. Our web application has 5 different roles, and theres a funtionality needed on a dropdownlist related to the user roles.

we're trying to store users full name and other data, i've seen the tutorials about storing addtional information and everthing is very clear there, the problem now is this code we have already to fill a dropdownlist.

Dim techUsers As String() = Roles.GetUsersInRole("tech")
For Each usr As String In techUsers
DropDownList1.Items.Add(usr)
Next

So basically were looking at storing the user id of the user just created with the create new user wizard to our table where full name is gonna be stored.

table is like this:

userid

full name

and other data required here. etc

so basically, we're filling the dropdownlist with the usernames of the users in the tech rol with the coded i posted above, but we need to instead of showing the username(which is our case is just number) ,show the full name of that users belonging to the tech role, obviouly its just a query, but how to get the full names of users beloning to a specified role? thats the main question and problem we have right now.

Security :: Folder Security / How To Block Anonymous Users

Jan 12, 2010

I have a web page where I am denying anonymous users from accessing. In the web site I have a folder called FileManager. In the web app the usres have the ability to uploaded files and when they do a folder gets created under the filmanger and the files are saved. I have created a web.config in this folder that denies anonymous users. The problem is if the user knows the directory structure they can type in the url of the site add /FilManager/x/x/NameOfFile, where x are the sub directories. If the file is an image it shows the image in ie, if it is a .xls or .doc or what ever they get the prompt to either download or save the file. What am I doing wrong. Will the web.config file not stop an anonymous user from access files? I put a webpage in the folder and it is blocked and the user gets sent to the login screen, but files seem to be unsecured.

How do I block anonymous users from being able to access the files in this folder?

We have developed web application using Asp.net, C# and SQL Server. However, When viewing the Process Info Tool for MS SQL Server, we see lots of processes (150-1000+) with Status = 'sleeping' and Command = 'AWAITING COMMAND' (Application = '.Net SqlClient Data Provider')The DataReaders and Connections are all being closed, but still the sleeping connections are accumulating. The problem becomes so severe that we finally get a "General Network Error" or a "Internal system error" and if we restart IIS. We have tested a lot but no success.

Security :: Users With More Than One Role?

Mar 4, 2010

I have an application that uses Forms Authentication and Role Management. I have a few users with more than one role associated to the user. Based on certain roles, the navigation menu displays certain menu options.

Right now, if the user has more than one role, the menu shows the items that are in both roles instead of the items that are in the particular role that the user is logged into or currently set to.

I'm creating an Authentication Ticket to log the user in and I'm passing the active user role as follows:

authenticationTicket = New FormsAuthenticationTicket(1, UserName, DateTime.Now, DateTime.Now.AddMinutes(20), False, UserRole)

Is there anyway to set the user to one particular role and have the application see the user in this single role instead of reading all the roles that the user is in?
