Security :: How To Create And Manage The Back-end Of The Website
Aug 3, 2010
We have chosen the asp.net 3.5 on creating our thesis project, building a mall website. Our first step was very simple, we've worked on the layout of the website, building the interface of the home page. and we are about to create some on the back-end part, which is creating a user-level maintenance and store maintenance.
I'm using vs 2005 and asp.net 2.0 to create my website. Recently, I thought about applying membership instead of my customized security system in order to achieve higher security level and performance. At first thing went well, since it was easy to create/manage users and Role names from behind code, but when I came upon the "Access Rules" I faced what you can call it an 'obstacle' at least from my opinion.
The thing is, I don't want to use Asp.net Web Site Administration Tool to create and manage my access rules which I'm going to assign to each of my dynamically created Roles. What I want to be able to do is make a page where the Admin can create/manage his desired Role(s) and also, create/manage the Access Rules, then add such Access Rules to the previously created Role(s).
Now, what I need to know first is... is it even possible to do such thing in the first place? Because the way i understand it is, since the access rules are stored in the web.config of each folder/directory that you apply them on then it shouldn't be allowed to modify it from the running/published website.
I'm new to web dev. and I'm using asp.net/C# to build a website. I currently have a class called DataLayer that I'm using to perform all of my database functions, and also store some queried information. I initially had this class as static, because that's how I wanted it to behave, but then realized that will be all kinds of bad for multiple users.
I have to make an instance out of this class in order to use it, but I need to maintain the same instance throughout several webpages for that user. Any thoughts or ideas on how to go about this approach? How to pass this object from page to page? Store in session variable, as a global object somehow?
Working on my first asp.net webpage. i have followed video tutorials and implemented asp.net membership for login/security.Using Visual Studio 2010 i can open the Asp.net configuration page for management locally. But then if I want my site admin to manage users/security online, how is this done? Like manage through a web browser. I guess this asp.net configuration GUI is not available on the internet?
i want to manage all the design of my website(asp.net) through my css. my client requirement is he should be able to change all design of website within 4-5 hrs.
I am trying to create a login page on my website. When I view the page in a browser and enter the login name and password, I receive the following error message:
Server Error in '/membership' Application.
Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
Description:
An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

I was able to connect to the aspnetdb database using the Web Site Administration Tool. The aspnetdb database is not in the App_Data directory.
I need to create a membership section in my ASPX website and I was wondering how do I start. It should be a simple member log in section, where they could register, see their profile, and upload documents once they register. Do I need to create a database for that or visual studio 2010 already has some templates included?
i have only basic Knowledge of Master Page and a Small Knowledge of CSS,
Now i have to Create a MasterPage with Menus, images, header, footer etc, asĀ Educational Website must have.
Exmaple or any Link Through Which i can Learn how to use id and Classes, div Tag to Divide The Page, and id and Classes to give Nice Look to Menus and other items,
WARNING - Absolute beginner here with VS. I'm expecting a steep learning curve, but I'm up to it! I'm trying to create a website with membership/login. Followed the above walkthrough MANY time, and been very careful with the username and password entered, but I keep getting the message that the loging failed. The asp application name is "Membership" This is the whole thing, automatically created following the walkthrough, apart from adding 2 members - yes, did go to the memberpages folder at the set rules page.
Solution Explorer: Solution 'membership' (1 project) - //localhost/membership/ - App_Data - ASPNETDB.MDF aspnetdb_lpg.LDF - MemberPages web.config - Default.aspx Default.aspx.vb - Login.aspx Login.aspx.vb webconfig aspnet_Membership: (2 members) PasswordFormat = 1 The ApplicationId for the 2 members is different - should it be?..........
I can do the database and security side with no problems, I can also get the hostname from the URL, but what I am struggling to find out is how to create the basic plumbing that would allow a new customer to sign up online, provide their company name, and for the application to create the new URL, ready to be used straight away.
I have to create the custom pages/ templates. User has to specify the fields and controls from UI and then we have to display the specified controls on an aspx page. We have mutiple users that are adding their custom fields and controls. How we can manage this data in database? Do we have to create different database for each user or we have to create different tables for each user in a single database? Also, I can go with any other option (XML, Sharepoint etc) so that all the data will be managed in a simpler form.
I am using loginview control to manage membership loggled in data and anonymous data. But since I have to copy entire data to login view template. I think it is not perfect solution in case i just have few differences in all type of templates. I tried to use loginview whenever I actually need it. But it supports just after form declaration.
Also what if I need to have multiple loginviews. Is there any way to do this manually. I just dont like to copy entire design for each template and just like to manage identical changes.
I am working on an application that resides on a development server on our internal network. The application was originally written to use Membership and Roles. We got busy almost a year ago before the app was finished, and now we are trying to get it ready to use internally.
The login page works just fine, but I have lost the ability to controls users and roles. I am running Visual Studio 2010 Professional now on a Windows 7 VM. I can open the application fine but there is no Web Administration Tool available for me to manage users or roles. If I go to Website -> in Visual Studio, there is no option for ASP.NET Configuration in the drop down menu. It simply isn't there.
How can I regain access to manage users and roles for this application? We are using Forms authentication and the database resides on a SQL Server 2005 instance on a separate box from the web server and my local VM.
I have a mdf database in my computer. And I have sql management studio 2005 installed. I would like to mange the mdf database with this program and I do not know how.
I have a asp.net website in the IIS which is available on internet as www.xyz.com now I have been asked to prepare another website which will be accessed via www.xyz.com/abc.
For this, do I need to create a virtual directory under the website folder XYZ in IIS? or is there any other way to achieve this.
I have a website installed on one of our sales guys laptops and am having issues with the website hanging if left for 2 minutes. This doesn't happen on my dev box, my live machine or the other sales guys machine.
The website will hang. It's not just limited to this page, it will happen on all pages when I leave it for more than 2 minutes and then try and process a page that calls back via button or drop down ect. I have checked the IIS settings of the machine and everything seems the same as the other sales guys machine who is running the same version of the site.
Here are the specs:
Dev Box: asp.net 2, windows server 2008 64bit
Live Box: asp.net 2, windows server 2008 64bit
Working Sales Guy: asp.net2 windows 7 64bit
Broken Sales Guy: asp.net 2 Windows vista 32 bit (the only thing I can see different is windows version)
EDIT: For more information, if I stop the website from trying to load while it hangs, clear my history for the last hour and then refresh, the page comes back fine.
EDIT2: I have just spat out some debug information and it seems it doesn't even go into the post back I need.
EDIT3: This doesn't seem to happen when using Chrome but does when using IE and Mozilla.
I am creating a web site through command line. I am able to create a web site with single host address. But i want multiple host address for a website. this is the command I am using iisweb /create D:Test Test.com /d [URL]
