C# - Manage Back End Data Layer Class Instance Throughout Site?
Jan 21, 2011
I'm new to web dev. and I'm using asp.net/C# to build a website. I currently have a class called DataLayer that I'm using to perform all of my database functions, and also store some queried information. I initially had this class as static, because that's how I wanted it to behave, but then realized that will be all kinds of bad for multiple users.
I have to make an instance out of this class in order to use it, but I need to maintain the same instance throughout several webpages for that user. Any thoughts or ideas on how to go about this approach? How to pass this object from page to page? Store in session variable, as a global object somehow?

My repositories throw exceptions (System.Exception) when some things go bad and I know this is bad practice.. so i will create a custom exception (DataException). My question is should this custom ex class be in the repository layer or the domain layer? Im thinking it should be in Domain layer where all business objects and repository interfaces live but just want to make sure.

I am using DotNetOpenAuth in my ASP.Net Website. I have modified it to work with Facebook Connect as well, using the same methods and database structures. Now I have come across a problem.
I have added a Facebook Connect button to a login page. From that HTML button, I have to somehow pull information from the Facebook Connect connection and pass it into a method to authenticate the user. The way I am currently doing this is by:
Calling a Javascript Function on the onlogin function of the FBML/HTML Facebook Connect button. The javascript function calls a Web service to login, which it does correctly. The web service calls my data access layer to login. And here is the problem: FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie is set at the data access layer. The Cookie is beyond the scope of the user's page and therefore is not set in the browser. This means that the user is authenticated, but the user's browser is never notified. So, I need to figure out if this is a bad way of doing what I need or if there is a better way to accomplish what I need. I am just not sure and have been trying to find answers for hours.

We have chosen the asp.net 3.5 on creating our thesis project, building a mall website. Our first step was very simple, we've worked on the layout of the website, building the interface of the home page. and we are about to create some on the back-end part, which is creating a user-level maintenance and store maintenance.

I added the BusinessAccessLayer refernce in Presentation Layer. and I created DataAccessLayer[DAL] and ORM [DBModel.DBML]. when i try to create the instance for the Table in presenation layer[default.aspx], The Table name is not shown.After adding the DataAccessLayer refernce in the presentation layer, the table name[MM_User] instance are shown.Is it the right method [Adding the DAL refernce in Presenation Layer]? If not, whats the solution for for accessing the instance of the tables[MM_User].Is it related to the Creating the DataContextWrapper class in DAL?

I've created a Sign Out link on my page, just like the one you see on the top right hand corner of this forum.
This is the code i use :
<asp:HyperLink NavigateUrl="~/Login.aspx" ID="hypSignOut" runat="server" Text="Sign Out"></asp:HyperLink>
However, after signing out, I click the back button on my browser, I can still go back into the site. How do I prevent this?

I have a class instance which is created by using Activator.CreateInstance() method. That class instance contains helper methods which are frequently used throughout the application. In order to avoid creating the instance multiple times, I'm just thinking about implementing an appropriate caching mechanism. The following consideration should be taken into account:
1) I can't use static class and methods.
2) There are around 6 instances (1 instance per class) per App Domain.

I am building a web site following the tutorials on asp.net. I am using dataset as data access lay, and writing classes to access the dataset. But the example is just basic ideas, how do I retrieve individual table column value in the business layer?For example, if I have a table called Product, I only want to find out what is the product name by product id. I did this in my ProductBLL:
public ProductBLL
{
public int GetProductName(string productId)
{
ProductDataSet.ProductDataTable prodData = Adapter.GetProductById(productId);
[code]...
Is there a better way, or am I doing this correctly? Can anybody give me a reference to a more complicated business logic model?

To have a better secure application, we have to prevent cross site scripting.
I have application that use a bll.
All inputs have to pass bll before they were pass to database.
To prevent cross site scripting, is bll the correct place to validate the input?
To be exact, are all the properties of object should be validated?

I have an asp.net usercontrol (ascx) that inherits from an abstract class (that inherits from a UserControl). My Project is in a 3-tier architecture (DAL -> Bll -> UI/Views). Currently there are no class files in the UI layer (other than the code-behinds). Which layer should I add this abstract class to?

I've been attempting to walk through the "Creating a Data Access Layer" tutorial found [URL] I create the DB connection, create the typed dataset and table adapter, specify the sql, etc. When I add the code to the presentation layer (in this case a page called AllProducts.aspx) I am unable to find the NorthwindTableAdapters.ProductsTableAdapter class. I tried to import the NorthwindTableAdapters namespace, but it is not showing up. Looking in the solution explorer Class View confirms that there is a Northwind class, but not the namespace I'm l ooking for. I've tried several online tutorials that all have essentially the same steps, and I'm getting the same results.

I have a form with multiple TinyMCE instance. I created the TextArea controls dynamically using a Repeater control - They all have the same ID,but I gave each one a different class. I assigned each of the TextArea controls a TinyMCE instance using the editor_selector : option in the TinyMCE Init function.
tinyMCE.init({ mode : 'textareas',theme : 'simple',editor_selector : 'upperBlock',directionality : 'rtl'}); tinyMCE.init({ mode : 'textareas',theme : 'simple',editor_selector : 'middleBlock',directionality : 'rtl'});
I want to refer to a specific TinyMCE instance in a JS function and get its content. In the case when each TextArea control has a different id that could by done by using :
tinyMCE.get('IdOfYourTextBoxWithTheTinyMCEContent').getContent()
Is there a way to get ref to a specific TinyMCE instance content by the class assigned to it in the editor_selector option of the TinyMCE Init function ?

I've a class that hold all the necessary properties. I want to pass the instance of that class in RedirectToAction. Right now, I can pass the instance but the action to which it redirect, doesn't receive that same instance. The target action has new instance of class.
eg.
AbcFilter a = new AbcFilter();
a.ABCname="abc";
RedirectToAction("AbcAction",a);
Public ActionResult AbcAction(AbcFilter a)
{// this method receives the "a" as new instance, but not the same that I pass in RedirectToAction
}

I have an ASP.NET web site project where I am using both VB.Net and C# class files. I have included separate sub folders in the App_Code directory for classes of each language.However, while I can successfully make use of a C# class in a VB class, I cannot do the opposite: use a a VB class in a C# class.
So, to illustrate, I might have two classes such as this:
Public Class VBTestClass
Public Sub New()
End Sub [code]....
I get an error that "the type or namespace "VBTestClass" could not be found". What am I missing here?
