I am creating a website, where my client is planning to target 1000's or user registrations with their login area etc. Is it a good idea to use role management/aspnetdb for this purpose?

To work with the ASP.NET 2.0 Membership and Role, we will use Forms authentication for the public Internet.
On the other hand, we use Windows authentication for Intranet applications. uestion: In a website with Windows authentication, can I still have some kind ofole management for different
groups of the Intranet users? If yes, how?
I have created data base called"AspNetServicesDB" in sql server and then created login called"AspNetServicesUser" under login section.After that I created new user called "AspNetServicesUser" under my newly created database.Then I used "aspnet_regsql.exe" command and successfully configured.Once I checked "AspNetServicesDB" data base I could see all the tables were successfully created.
Problem I always getting error "Could not establish a connection to the database. " when I try to select provider. My connection string as follows.

I have ticketing application developed in very unprofessional coding technique.
I am doing an upgrade and i am thinking to use master pages role management. i have few questions?
1) How can i use controled view for users/administrators on the page.
2) how can i use active directory to use authintication?
3) but i want to use .net role management to control the role management?
I'm using my own role management and user management in my application, i now need to use forms authentication. How can i do this?

View 1 RepliesI have deployed an MVC application that uses ASPNetDB for Membership and Role Provider.
now when i browse to the site on the actual server where it was deployed to i can use the login page to login on to the site and gain access to views that are restricted to users like myself by role.
However when i try and access the web application from any client computer who has access to sites on the server since the server is on the same domain - i experience the following strange behaviour:
when i navigate to my login page and enter my username and password (as stored in the aspnetdb database)
and click login
the page refreshes (looses my userid and name) and it does not go to the view i requested.
it also does not show in the top right links that i am logged on.
it is as though it spits out my username and password and refresh the page and that is that!
Why does it work on the server where the site is hosted - but not from external clients?
i can access all pages that do not require users to be logged on or haev a specific role - but cannot log on and view them since login is broken?
I am creating a interface for User Role Management based on built in membership provider.I want to display all the roles as check boxes for a selected user. I am able to display all the roles in the database, but not able to load the specific user roles. For example, I am able to publish role 1 role 2 role3 role 4 as check boxes. But if the user is already flagged as role 1 and role 3, I am not able to show that data (role1 and 3 should be checked when form loads, but right now, they are not checked)...How do I get the roles as checked boxes display on a page.I am using a repeater control to display roles as check boxes on the page..

i was hoping to build the user/role configuration utility into my website. I have posted before, and from what i have read, you need to create your own user/role membership utility in your website.but, i noticed in the
Microsoft.net directory C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727ASP.NETWebAdminFiles, that this is the entire interface for managing roles and users for a web site as long as you use standard asp.net security.is it possible to copy this site into my site to have a ready-to-go interface for user management without a user needing to have visual studio? It seems like it should be possible with minimal code changes, but I might be wrong. Im just looking for a shortcut.
Usually in sub-folder we will limit the access right to some roles and this feature requires pre-defined database schema.
However, if i still want to use this role feature of asp.net, but I do not like the pre-define database schema, I want to extract role information from my own database table and bind it to the role.
Why asp.net sql role provider does not allow to update the role name , whats its reasons.

However i wanna use the membership API to use the tables generated in the aspnetdb.mdf. Is there a way to generate thoses tables in my own database and then use my database instead? cause many host only enable us to use one database.

I am not usign SQL Express
1. Installed VS2008 + sp1 after that Installed SQL 2008 Standard x86 + sp1
2. Used aspnet_regsql to add aspnetdb to the sql (I can see that db in MSSMS)
3. From my WebProject I can access WSAT but when I click on the Provider and try to test I am getting above error.
Tried diffetent settings in the web.config and also check machine.config Check different solutions form different forums but nothing seams to work.
I strongly believe there is something wrong with my <connectionString/> as by default WSAT points to .SQLEXPRESS but I do not know which file should I update (web.config or machine.config or Web.config)
Do I need to add <connectionStrig> tag to web.config ?
I used aspnet_regsql -W wizard approach to create DB for membership tables. and added script as follows in web.Config

In one of my web app's pages, the code behind needs to grab the UserId of the person logged in, so that it can then be inserted into a table which was added to the original aspnetdb.mdf. This table contains a column with a uniqueidentifier primary key which is in direct relationship with the aspnet_Users table; however I seem to have trouble retrieving the UserId. This table contains the additional information of a user which is not included in the provider, and it has a one-to-one relationship with aspnet_Users.
I hope this makes sense. I haven't written any code for it yet; I'm only at the thinking part of this stage. But my mind keeps going blank.(perhaps I need a break from the solution???).

We needed to move it to anotherserver, after we moved that, the membership database (aspnetdb) did not work.....finally i solved the problem, and now I have another problem. although in the web.config enablepasswordretrieval is set to true, and the type is clear, i get error in password retrieval.
View 7 RepliesI have developed a Silverlight app using forms authentication and the asp net membership, aspnetdb, the whole enchilada.The bug I see is that the password for my users change by them self every bow and then, the way I fix them is by deleting the user and creating them again, this has been I problem all the time.In a post I read the problem was manifesting because I didn't have a machineKey in my web.config, I now do, so I dunno what the problem is this time...Is there a definitive fix to this? can you please provide assistance?

I have a named instance of sql 2008 developer edition installed. I have changed the Server name but the query string will still not work. I want to be able to use the default db "aspnetdb.mdf". I use Windows authentication to connect. How can i change the connection string to get this to work?
I am using Visual Studio 2008 Express.
I did this simple test:
I created a new Web project with a simple page that has a Log In. There were no databases in App_Data.
I used the configuration tool to create a Role and User.
I refreshed the project folder and behold AspNetDB.mdf has appeared in the App_Data folder.
I have checked the Web.Config file and there is NO Connection string to this database.
So how do I move the Roles/Users application data storage away from AspNetDB.mdf to my own database ?
I am in the begininng stages of designing (or redisigning) a site. I am using VWD Express 2010 and the project is configured for .net 4.0. I am designing it offline so its currently just on my laptop, which is also running sql server express 2008 R2.
When I ran the ASP.Net Configuration tool, it automatically created a database called aspnetdb in the app_data folder where it stores all the user and roll info. How can I use a different database that has the same schema as well as some additional tables of my own. I want to point it to mylocally running sql server.
Currently in security setting in website configuration, there us only User, Roles, And Access Rules.i want to add Groups as top level for Users. is it possible?
