Security :: Impersonate A Connection To SQL Server Under IIS App Pool Account If Windows Authentication?

Aug 31, 2010

I have a requirement I should connect to MS SQL server under IIS Application pool account from ASP.NET application where Windows Authentication is enabled. I cannot use user name and password in connection string.

ASP.NET application should use Entity Framework 4.0 to work with data.

IIS Express - Impersonate A Windows Account?

Dec 3, 2010

I'm using IIS Express to host my website, and I would like to do something similar to Directory Security in IIS 6. In IIS 6, I was able to go to the Directory Security tab and allow the anonymous user to be a local windows account.

Is there something equivalent in IIS Express for that? What changes do I need to make in applicationhost.config?

Connect To SQL Server Using Windows Authentication And Specific Account?

Feb 21, 2011

I have an ASP.Net app, that runs using windows authentication. The connection to the SQL Server is usually done by creating a sql server account and using that in the connection string.

However, in this specific very restrictive hosting environment, we have been asked to use a specific WINDOWS/active directory account to connect to the SQL Server.

note it is not the windows credentials of the user of the website, we need to connect to the SQL server with - it is one specific windows/AD account.

How do I configure that in my connection-string?

Configuration :: IIS 7.5 Application Pool Identity Account And Windows Folders?

Nov 1, 2010

"My application (ASP.NET) writes certain files in folders on my servers. In IIS 6.0 I used to give write access to IUSR account so that IIS can write to the folder. Now what I see is my application pool runs under App Pool Identity account. That is good but users are able to create files in the folders without App Pool Identity user being given specific permission to do so.

Visual Studio :: Add Connection / Use SQL Server Authentication - Fails On Windows 7 Pro

May 5, 2010

I'm using VS 2010 RTM and SQL Server 2008 on my clean development laptop, running Windows 7 Pro.

Using Visual Studio's Server Explorer, I can easily do an Add Connection by simply right-clicking, and then completing the dialog, and choosing "Use Windows Authentication". I can then click the button "Test Connection".

However, if I wish to do an Add Connection, and then choose "Use SQL Server Authentication", I get a message "Login failed for user 'appSlir'", as shown here:

When I try the same thing on my other development machine, which is VS 2008, SQL Server 2008, and Windows XP Pro, it works fine.

There seems to be a problem/bug that prevents Add Connection with "Use SQL Server Authentication" to SQL Server 2008, when running on Windows 7 Pro.

Security :: Running App Pool Under Administrator Account?

Mar 3, 2010

We have a website that calls a utility from the command line to create thumbnails places them in a directory and then the page will display the contents of this folder to the user. The utility seems to only work when we run the application pool under an administrative account, we have tried the network service, local system, and local service all to no avail.Just wondered if anyone had an opinion on how secure/unsecure it would be if we ran the website under the administrative machine account? Does this open up a massive secuurity hole etc is it that likely that we are comprimising the network.

Security :: Identity Impersonate - False And IIS In Windows Mode

Feb 21, 2011

I have a webpage stored on a local server (Site A) which when I browse to it is given my windows account details, this site then checks within AD to get my email address. My email address is then passed to another website (Site B) and consumed. The Website A is set in IIS to Integrated Windows Auth Only, WebSite A has

<identity impersonate="false"/>

set in the web.config What I dont understand is what user is accessing AD from site A - with impersonate = false that is telling the site not impersonate the windows user, but this seems at odds with the setting in IIS.

Security :: Windows Integrated Security And Application Pool Identity?

Aug 9, 2010

My website security is configured with "Windows Integrated Security" only (anonymous is disabled).

I also want to set a specific account to run the w3wp.exe process using the
Application Pool Identity to a domain account.

Running directly from the server works without any problem but from remote computers I always get the authenticaion window then the 401.1 error (after 3 attempts).

It seems that its the combination of "Windows Integrated Security" along with the "Application Pool Identity" that causes the problem. When I disable one of the two it works properly.

My server is Windows Server 2003 R2, running IIS 6.0.

Windows Authentication To SQL With AD Username And Password In Connection String?

Jul 29, 2010

I'm writing an ASP.Net MVC intranet application which is accessed via handhelds and a range of browsers. My users all have AD accounts and have different permission to our SQL database views/procs depending on who they area. The database also uses CURRENT_USER for horizontal partitioning.

Because of the range of devices that need to access the application I can't rely on impersonation/delegation or the trusted subsystem. I want the user to simply input username and password (same as AD) when the above mechanisms fail.

Does anyone know how I can use AD username and password in a connection string to access the database without creating a set of SQL mirror accounts? I can't login with network service or a sql proxy account because the database needs to be user aware.
