I am creating a Web Application in asp.net 2.0 and sql server 2005.I want to use an existing database.
I have created a login and a signup page. Then i replace the new SQL database (the one that is created automaticly by the visual studio) with the exiting database I have.If I create a new user, the new user goes to the database and I can login with the new user. I cannot login with the existing users. If I go to the asp.net configuration, I only can see the new users I have created, I cannot see the users that were in the database already and I can't see the roles also.
I can I make the new application to recognize the users and roles of the existing database?

you could create your own custom Profile provider that operates against existing database tables .i want u to help me out if u have an idea where i can get steps by steps to carry out the above operation.i know there are various options in creating profile , particularlly the use of web. configuration, the default ASPNETDB, and XML files, BUT i wish to use an existing database which i prefer.

I would like to use the Role Membership and User Security database as my application database too. That is, just add the tables and relationships required by my application's data access layer to the Membership and Roles Database to save on hosting fees, (I have to pay extra for having two databases instead of one). Of course, the connection string would have to be adjusted, but I don't see a downside considering the application's database is actually an Access database. What can I say, it was a requirement at the time.
Basically, I would like to do the opposite of this:

I've taken over a website which has around 3000 users registered using the standard asp.net membership provider on a SQL database. When the website was set up there were a lot of gaps in the system and we have a lot of tidying up to do of users with the same email addresses etc and invalid addresses so i'm just starting to look at how i can wrap all of this up and make administering the user accounts easier.
At the moment the account passwords are stored in "Hashed" format set in the web.config and obviously this doesn't allow for password retrieval. I want to know whether there is a way of converting all of these passwords from a hashed format to an encrypted format thus allowing me to create a password recovery page that doesn't then send the user a new password which is quite often something like "a*ns7#<3lx"
Ideally i'd like to convert all of these if that is possible so that I do a much simpler password retrieval system. If this is not possible can you tell me how i go about setting the passwordreset value not to contain all sorts of non-alpha/numberic characters?

We need to expose some services (i.e. AddressValidatorService, CustomerFinderService) that currently reside in an ASP.NET application to other applications within our organization. Exposing these services via WCF seems like a natural fit, but I don't see any best-practices for how to pull these common services into a WCF wrapper in such a way that my existing ASP.NET application can continue to use them with minimal code changes and/or awareness that the service they are consuming is no longer in-process. I'm especially looking for recommendations on how to structure the existing ASP.NET solution and whether to host our new WCF in the same solution or in some new shared WCF solution referenced by both our ASP.NET application and external callers. Also, is it bad practice to simply promote the DTOs currently only consumed in-process via ASP.NET to full fledged data contracts or is it preferable to create duplicate DTOs that are explicitly decorated with [DataContract]?

Creating a system with web front end and SQL backend (microsoft obviously). I have tried using the asp.netsqlprovider but i can;t as i am only allowed one database on the server, so i then tried to update my current database with the triggers to input the schema into the already existing database.Next step i create my own table with two simple fields of username and password and try and authenticate that way, i can't get that to work either.
I ahve limited permissions on the network as i am a University Student. I really don't know what to do. Never had to create a log on system before and i thought it would be far simpler than this. I ahve used Microsoft's sqlprovider schema before and it worked fine. I have also authenticated via IIS and AD too before. I can't do any of those two in this instance it seems.I need an alternative for logging in users, if needs be in can be crude. I also still need to have some kind of two different views too for logged in users and not logged in users, but that can change if needs must.Don't let me down people, haha. Think this posts in the correct place, i could not find another one i thought could be more relevant.

I have a development database and one in production. There are two different sets of data in each database. On my dev system, I have mostly dummy data that I test with and in production is the real data for my web application. I recently added a new feature to the app that required a new table, and a new field for a foreign key in an existing table. I now need to upload that new structure to the production database without overwriting the live data with my test data.
If I run the Database Publishing Wizard, and choose "Schema Only" will it import the new structure and leave the existing data alone, or will it drop the records in my production database tables?

I am in need of making a web application that has the ability to load word documents from sql server(onto the web page), edit them, then save them back to the database. I've read a couple of articles that show that you can integrate MS Word into .NET, so it looks like it is possible. My question is whether or not there are major security holes in doing so. Since I want to be able to save my changes back into the database, I am a little hesitant on what certain people might try to exploit if I do this.

I have setup a Web Site Administration Tool for a web application and it work great
Now i have another custom application that was built on a different server and site but i want to use the users in the existingWeb Site Administration Tool for authentication and authorisation. So i deployed the custom application to the the same server where the Web Site Administration Tool resides. and just changed the connection string to point to the same database. But when i login with a username and pass it says login no correct.http://myserver/IntranetAdminTool/default.aspx?pplicationPhysicalPath=C:Inetpubmyapplication&applicationUrl=/myapplicationwhen i go to the link above it works and i can see all my usershttp://myserver/IntranetAdminTool/default.aspx?pplicationPhysicalPath=C:Inetpubmyapplication2&applicationUrl=/myapplication2When i go to this link i can't see users as its th new custom application i just moved to the site.
I get error There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store. The following message may help in diagnosing the problem:Server cannot access application directory 'C:Inetpubmyapplication2'. The directory does not exist or is not accessible because of security settings. Is my approach a resonable one and is this possible?

I am using Visual Studio 2008 Express.
I did this simple test:
I created a new Web project with a simple page that has a Log In. There were no databases in App_Data.
I used the configuration tool to create a Role and User.
I refreshed the project folder and behold AspNetDB.mdf has appeared in the App_Data folder.
I have checked the Web.Config file and there is NO Connection string to this database.
So how do I move the Roles/Users application data storage away from AspNetDB.mdf to my own database ?

I was just wondering if anyone has ever had to port the schema across? Are there any experts that could pitch their opinions on the achievability of this (mad) idea? I'm using the IBM Migration Toolkit and as expected its throwing a bunch of translation errors some of which were relatively easy to solve (vendor specific function calls for example) and some will take quite a while to pin down and work round.... however this is not my main concern.
If completed I expect I am going to have to basically rework all the System.Web.Profile/Roles/Membership namespace classes etc to work round the SQL limitations of informix (i.e. IDS11.x SQL server doesnt have a DEFAULT (newguid()) so that would have to be put into the calling method) (and any MVP comments really as I can slap my boss round with the weight after he ludicrously agreed to this project for a client without doing any research...)

My question: I have a site where '*' users can look at the public directory and '?' users can look at the /Auth directory. It works out of the box as you'd expect. I have the connectionstring un-changed from the VS2010 template ASP.NET (C#) website pointing to the DB file under App_Data. When I run it on my machine on Casini it works perfectly. What I want to do now though is change the data source from the database file to an actual 2005 database. I have a blank 2005 SQL Database ready to use.Is there anything I have to do other than change the connectionstring to point to the database? Will the asp:Login control create the database tables, storedprocedures, relationships, etc.??I tried it (without concentratin admittedly) and it returned with something about schema version stored procedure not present??
