I am connecting to remote server for web service using ASP.NET 3.5 web site. something like, [URL]. Remote server is providing digest authentication to access the web service. I dont have access to modify authentication on the remote server but I have an windows account on that server. If I try to Access service WSDL through programming I get the following error:
The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. Same web service if I try to access through browser, [URL], it asks for user name and password. Entered windows account user name and password, still getting error: You are not authorized to view this page, HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized. How to pass the digest authentication credentials to the web service through visual studio or any other programmatic method?

i searched on google for a simple explanation of digest authentication but didn't find any good ones. How does it differ from Basic Authentication other than sending credentials as plain text?
give an example of the transaction.

I've recently enabled Digest Authentication on an intranet website/application I am creating for my company in ASP.NET.
The reason I have done so is because Windows Authentication seemed to only work for some users, and not for others. I could not figure out why nor do I know enough about IIS to try and trace the issue. After some trial and error, I found that digest authentication seemed to give me the behaviour that I wanted. That is: allow only users with a valid account on the domain to log in to the website with their credentials.
The problem now, is that Firefox (3+) seems to ask for the user to authenticate on every HTTP request sent to the server. This does not appear to occur in Internet Explorer (6+) or Chrome.
I've tried searching for solutions but I always arrive at dead-ends. I'll find a discussion about the issue, and every posted solution leads to a dead link...or it's on Experts Exchange and I don't have access to view to solution.
The issue appears to be related (from what I've read) to the way the different browsers send their authentication headers vs how IIS interprets them. I'm not sure what I can do to change this though? One of the solutions I had found mentioned writing an ISAPI filter to fix this, but of course the link to the finished filter was broken and I have no idea how to go about making one myself.
I've tried messing with the NTLM and other auth related strings in about:config to try and force Firefox to trust my server but that doesn't seem to work either.
From a few other sources I've read, it appears that everything should work if I switch back to Windows Authentication, but then I'm back at square one where the authentication would work only for some users and not others.
A solution for either problem would work for me, but I have very little information for the Windows Authentication issue. If someone could guide me through tracing the problem I'd gladly post more information for it as well.

I get the following message while trying to access the Security tab in ASP.NET Web Site Administration:A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)I have configured my own data store following this guide. Which essentially tells you to run aspnet_regsql.exe to set up a data store in order to keep authentication data for a SharePoint site (which is what I want to do).This is what I've written in the web.config at the end of the tag <system.web> for the Visual Studio 2008 project initiated to deal with the Web Site Administration:
<membership defaultProvider="AcAspNetSqlMembershipProvider">
<providers>
<add name="AcAspNetSqlMembershipProvider"

I am taking an existing ASP.NET site with authentication, membership & roles and updating it. In the process I am pulling the authentication portion off of the site and using an SSO (through Central Authentication Services - CAS). I need to retain the use the membership and roles of .NET. Right now my site allows users to add an account and I approve and add them to groups. Since I will no longer do the account management I still need a way to add them to the proper groups once they have an account.
The question is sort of a chicken/egg question... Since I am the admin I need to add myself first, but since the authentication is no longer local how do I do this? Do I develop a special function just to add my account and then other pages to manage the rest?

I'm trying to connected to a third-party server, that allows API access via XML post/response. I've created just a very simple test page with a button to press.... the button should just go to the URL, log in with basic authentication and then return the response. if I use a browser and go to the URL, I see the XML response. Usuing my app, I'm still getting 401 unauthorized. I've been at this for hours, I've searched the forums and googled extensively, still no luck. Also, this is an internal app to internal server so security is not the highest priority. I'm setting the UN and PWD for authentication in a simple form.
Here's my VB code behind:
Dim request As HttpWebRequest
Dim response As HttpWebResponse = Nothing
Dim reader As StreamReader
Dim result As String
'disables self-signed SSL cert errors
[Code] ....
And the username and password are 100% accurate - as I mentioned above the code (well, implied).
I feel like this SHOULD be pretty easy: Overall request for testing: Submit a web request to a URL, disable the SSL check (self-signed certs used), login with basic UN and PWD I supply, return the response to a textbox.

i m trying to set up an Intranet site with Windows Authentication. I have configured the web.config as shown below.
<authentication mode="Windows">
<roleManager enabled="true" />
I wanted to do authorization by roles so
<authorization>
<deny users ="?"/>
<allow roles="D820MySite_Developers, D820MySite_Admins"/>
</authorization>
I'm in the D820MySite_Developers group. When I attempt to login, it wants my password. I thought that with Windows Authentication it should not prompt for the password. If is use <allow user="*"/> it does not.
1. Is this the correct behavior?
2. My aspnetdb does not appear in the App_Data folder. Should it and is this causing the problem. If it should be there, how do I get it there?
3. I was under the impression that by using Windows Authentication, I can prevent users from accessing pages by folder. Is this provided by IIS or is this provided by Windows (using Windows Explorer)?

<system.web>
<authentication mode="Windows"/>
<authorization>
<allow users="domainuser, domainuser2" />
<deny users="*" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
I can log in with my own credentials, but I have virtually all the rights in AD. User2 can not log in. The website is set to use Windows authentication in IIS manager. And I've tried setting permissions in IIS manager and NTFS permissions for the folde

I'm working on a new project and I would like to use forms authentication to protect the necessary pages. The project is going to be focused on companies where a company would create an account and have multiple users. Each company should have its own data and should not be able to see other companies' data. What would be the best way to go about this? I've considered using a subdomain for each company which would tell the application which membership provider to use. I've also considered using an additional credential such as company ID to specify which company the user is logging into.

I am trying to build a web app for an intranet site that for security reasons needs to make the user type in their Windows or Active Directory username pwd manually. I have previously worked with Integrated Windows Auth but in this case, we do want them to use type in their AD credentials.
I have been trying to look up how to do this and frankly I am a bit lost. It should be a fairly straightforward task and am hoping you can point me in the right direction, with some tutorials or examples. We will be using SSL so, dont have to worry about passing pwd in cleartext over the wire.
My environment is visual studio 2008 in C#, .net 3.5 if that matters.

I have an intranet site that i set up to windows authentication. It works fine most of the time but some departments wont be able to access the site and will be asked to enter user name and password.I checked their Active Directory account and the only difference i could see was that the organizational unit parameter was different than the rest of the users.

I'm using a WCF with windows authentication.
I also use custom binding:
[Code]....
While trying to access the service without specifing the user credentials everything work's ok and the current user(Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name) at service is the logged in user.
When I try to set user credentials this way:
[Code]....
The service just ignores them.
When I try it this way:
[Code]....
I'm getting this error: "The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Negotiate'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Negotiate,NTLM'."

We have a link in our site that pin points to sharepoint documents and we are retreiving some documents files (*.doc). Our sharepoint uses IWA (integrated windows authentication) which is prompted if we're trying to access that documents, unfortunately we don't want to prompt that window to authenticate the user. We need is to create a username and password and authenticate it. how can we do that.
Note* we have 2 server one for our application and the other one is for sharepoint.

I keep redirected to a "401 Unauthorized" page, which is the Login page. It first loads a 302 Found (Failed to load source for: http://localhost:4558) page then
the redirection.
<!--<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="~/Login" timeout="2880"/>
</authentication>-->
Everything works well when I comment the attribute Authentication at web.config or if after I logged-in.
Before this happens, I delete all files at (C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Temporary ASP.NET Files). Don't you think this is the reason?
I'm under MVC, even if I remove the action filter Authorize(), I still get redirected to 401.
</httpModules>
<identity impersonate="true" />
</system.web>
I use VWD 2008 SP1 and MSSQL2005.

I want to implement a custom authentication in my application using the basic authentication schema. I've configured it in the Web.config and enabled the basic authentication in the IIS, but when I try to open the service in the browser... appears a login dialog... what do I have to put ther? Besides, I want to control the authentication, I mean, I want to check whom is allowed in my custom list... where is it looking now?
When I use the WebRequest class, I'm getting a "401 - Unauthorized":
req = WebRequest.Create("http://localhost/RESTfulService/Service1.svc/Test");
req.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultNetworkCredentials;
WebResponse res = req.GetResponse();
What do I have to do for implement a custom basic authentication? (I cannot use membership providers).
I've set up in the Web.config:
[code]....

this is a bit of a strange one. have my front page of my intranet site and I am trying to pull an RSS feed from a subdirectory forum.
Root
Default.aspx
--->Forum
--->Rssfeed.aspx
On my default.aspx I can pull RSS Feeds from the BBC or any other external website so my code is working fine but when I try and pull a RSS feed from my local server I get "The remote server returned an error: (401) Unaithorized".Now, if I go to the Forum directory within IIS and change the directory secutiry from "Integrated Windows Authentication" to "Enable anonymous access" the RSS comes through to the front page without any errors, however, the forum requires "Integrated Windows Authentication" to be enable to that my users can post on the forum. If I turn both on then Windows authentication is still ignored for my users when they visit the forum.I have hardcoded my credentials in to the Default.aspx.cs to see if that helps but I still get Unauthorized message.My code is here:
[Code]....
As you can see I have tried a couple of different ways to get the credentials to work, it just seems to ignore my credentials and I have full admin access to the server and when I visit the forum it picks up my username.
