Security :: Trying To Run The Application From The Shared Location(not From The Local Machine)?
Aug 13, 2010
when I am trying to run the asp.net application from the shared location(not from the local machine), I have encountered a security exception as 'request for the permission of type 'system.web.aspnet hosting permission'. I have given the full trust rights to share folder.. but still I have got the same error..

In my ASP.NET application, I need to be able to authenticate/authorise against local Windows users/groups (ie. not Active Directory) on a different machine, as well as be able to change the passwords of said remote local Windows accounts.
Yes, I know Active Directory is built for this sort of thing, but unfortunately the higher ups have decreed it needs to be done this way (so authentication against users in a database is out as well).
I've tried using DirectoryEntry and WinNT like so:
DirectoryEntry user = new DirectoryEntry(String.Format("WinNT://{0}/{1},User",
serverName, username), username, password, AuthenticationTypes.Secure)
but this results in an exception when you try to log in more than one user:
Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.
I've tried making sure my DirectoryEntries are used inside a using block, so they're disposed properly, but this doesn't seem to fix the issue. Plus, even if that did work it is possible that two users could hit that line of code concurrently and therefore try to create multiple connections, so it would be fragile anyway.
Is there a better way to authenticate against local Windows accounts on a remote machine, authorise against their groups, and change their passwords?

Basically what I am trying to do is have my webpage project folder located directly on my local machine (ex. Local #1). Our database is located on a server (ex. Server #1) . I am building my web applications on my local machine and then trying to debug them in Visual Studio 2008. Only every single time I click to debug my project I get a "Security Exception" error that looks something like the following...
"Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.
Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed."
I'm somewhat leaning towards the fact that I need to connect to the database to pull information from it and I don't have the proper permissions is the reason why this is happening but I've also read that it can be something that deals with improper configuration of my Web.Config file (i.e. I do not have something enabled).
Note #1: A co-worker of mine is having the same problem if he tries to put the project locally and then debug it. He has full administrative access to the DB and everything else.

i developed an asp.net(2.0) applicaions which contains the attachments of the clients . these attachments are saved in the shared folder and retrive the file when the user requests.if i maintain the application and the shared folders in the same system it will work properly.if i maintain the application in one server and the file folder in the other server i face a lot of security issus like1.Access Denied2.Couldnot find the part of the path......for this i made an common account for the application server and the file server and also set impersonation to true.Even the i got the couldnot find the part of the path error.i already gave the everyone with full control to the shared folder and i added the common account and gave it to full controlIs there is any alternate for the save and retrive the files to and from the shared folder.

On one of my pages I display a datetime (from a database) and it is formatted correctly as a UK date time (dd-mm-yyyy) on my local machine. However when I deploy it to a server it reverts to American format (mm-dd-yyyy). Does anyone have any idea of when this might be happening?This might be outside the scope of stackoverflow

I basically want to transfer a file from the client to the file storage server without actual login to the server so that the client cannot access the storage location on the server directly. I can do this only if i manually login to the storage server through windows login. I dont want to do that. This is a Web-Based Application.

WebClient client = new WebClient();
NetworkCredential nc = new NetworkCredential(uName, password);

I have had a real nightmare with Server.MapPath(). When I call Server.MapPath("~") in my application that is running in ASP.NET Development Server it returns root directory that ends in a back slash like f:projectsapp1, but I call it in published version, installed in IIS, it returns root directory without any back slash like c:inetpubwwwrootapp1.
string mainRoot = HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~");
DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo(mainRoot);
//added to solve this problem with Server.MapPath
if (!mainRoot.EndsWith(@""))
mainRoot += @"";
FileInfo[] files = di.GetFiles("*.aspx");
foreach (FileInfo item in files)
{
string path = item.FullName.Replace(mainRoot, "~/").Replace(@"", "/");
//do more here
}

I would like to connect to a password protected shared location that has an access database using an ASP page. I have the user name and password needed to connect to the shared location but I am not sure how to set up the connection string in order to get this done. The access database I would like to connect to does not need a username or password, only the shared location does.

I am tasked with migrating a copy of our live website to the local drive so that changes can be made. Most of my focus has been getting the web.config file to work on the local drive. I used the aspnet_regiis tool to unencrypt the connection string, because this was causing a runtime error. I was getting the following:

I have an application which is installed on local pc and is using SQL db. It is a client management system where I want to add capability to register new clients and give them access to my web site which is sharing the same SQL database with local application.
At the moment clients can register on the web site and I have ASP.NET authorisation system set up with aspnetdb_user, aspnetdb_membership and etc tables. But sometimes it happens that I need to register clients on my local application on PC and ideally would like that registration to create online account for the client as well. Then I want to be able to send him user id and password by email and let him know that he has been registered in my database and online account is ready for him as well.
Basically I want to have full synchronization between asp.net membership service and local application through SQL db. As I said both online and local apps are shareing the same SQL database. what would be the best practice to implement it.

How can I test an application that I am publishing to a remote provider's IIS7 hosted site, with the VS2008 development server that is built in with VS2008 on an XP Machine?
My membership/roles work perfectly up on the remote host. On ths hosted IIS7 site when I try to access a secure directory it redirects to login, and I am able to login, however when I launch (debug - F5) from VS2008, it will provide that folder/resource, no questions asked. Same build, config, etc... nothing has changed.
I am running XP, and local IIS version installed is 5.1.
My guess is what is happening is that the new format required in the web.config is configured properly for IIS7 deployment, which is why it works remotely, but when running locally through VS2008/XP it is running with an older version on IIS and does not recoginize the new tags.

I've built an ASP.NET application that's using Forms Authentication. In our hosting account control panel, I set up an automated task that requests a web page once per week. When the page loads, a number of emails are sent out.I'd just like to know if there's any way to determine in the code-behind if the request is coming from the local machine (as with Windows authentication). Using a separate web.config file in the page sub-directory with Windows authentication mode doesn't work.

I am having some trouble with an ASP.NET website I've set up and it's very difficult to debug.Background Information:There is a page on my website that allows the user to upload one or many Microsoft Word documents. The user can then press a button, and the code is supposed to open the document(s), count the words, and then return the number of words in a table.This works perfectly fine when I am in Visual Studio running the debugger, however when I try to do it over the web from another computer, I get an error.

{
String file = this.lstFileBox.Items[i].Text;
// MicrosoftWordOperations is a custom class
MicrosoftWordOperations wordOps = new MicrosoftWordOperations(file);
String contents = wordOps.GetContents();
int numWords = wordOps.CountWords(contents);

Because of security reasons, we will not be able to use IIS on our local machines. I'm sure that many of you have faced the same problem, so how did you solve it? Here are the options that we're looking at:Create a VLAN that is isolated from the network for development. This will allow us to use any software, including IIS, that we want. A disadvantage is testing Web services with external organizations, which can be overcome by using stubs.Not use a VLAN and use only the ASP.NET Development Server that comes with Visual Studio, and then deploying that code to the development server. This has the disadvantage of not being able to replicate the production environment during local development.
