Security :: Enable User To Edit / Delete Based On User's Role Permission

Feb 24, 2011

I'm trying to allow logged user who are in department XYZ to perform some task for my third party App. I have two SQL tables named Users & UserList. The third party app (GoldMine) graps the USERNAME from the Users table and store it as UserID which I then referecnce SessionID. The UserList table has two columns (GM_UserName & Department) which I'm interested in. When a user login into the 3rd party app (GoldMine), i then compare the USERNAME (from Users table) to GM_UserName (from UserList table) and see whether GM_UserName is in = 'Dept XYZ'. Take a look at the SQL query below.

sqlDept = "SELECT USERNAME FROM Users LEFT JOIN UserList ON UserList.GM_UserName=Users.UserName WHERE UserList.Department ='Dept XYZ'"

I'm able to do this.

If Session("Userid") = "TestUser1" Or Session("UserID") = "TestUser2" Then Do this Else Do that End If
BUT unable to do this...
If user's Department = 'Department XYZ' Then
Do This
Do that
End IF

Security :: Access Level / Ensure That A User From A Particular Group Is Redirected To His/her Summary Page?

Apr 1, 2010

I have a summary page that has an Add New Record button, andEdit Record butto and a Delete Record button.Every user has ReadOnly access.However, only users with administrators Access Level can add, edit, delete, view.Users with Staffers Access Level can only Add records but cannot delete or edit.So, basically, 2 access Levels, Administrators, Staffers.Administrators can view, add, delete, update records.The rest, Staffers, can only view and Add records.I am struggling to figure this out.I have done this a ton of times using Classic ASP, something like:

If AccessLevel <> "Administrator" Then
Response.Redirect"login.asp" 'so if user has admin password, s/he ccan log in with that.
End if

4 different groups will be using the system, each will be redirected to their own summary page based on their groupNumber.All I just want now is to ensure that a user from a particular group is redirected to his/her summary page, then that user is checked again against AccessLevel (view, edit, delete, update).

Security :: Access Denied For Logged User (anonymous User Is Fine)

Jan 7, 2011

I deployed a website where a logged user or an anonymous user can select data and download a XML file. The website generate the XML file in the server and then deliver it.

It works fine in my development environment, but after deployment, the anonymous user can download the file, but the logged user receive this error:

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'd:HostsLocalUserheringerwebsiteUpload20110107094051.xml' is denied.

It is weird that as anonymous i can do it.

The website server help states this:

"Grant write, modify, delete access rights on website's folder

Your website executes under unique user account that by default has full control over the website's folder.
So your application can create, open, read, write and delete files and folders inside of your root folder.

There is no need and no way to change this permissions.

If, when running ASP.Net application, you still unable to create file or update it, you have to check your Web.Config file for "<Identity impersonate..." tag and remove it.

The only exception is when the application tries to modify a file or folder in "Application_Start" event of Global.asax file. This is by design that user authenticated only after the Application_Start even. Before the user is authenticated your website runs under an identity of Application Pool which is "Network services". That account doesn't have access to the folder of your website.

To make it work you eather have to move the code that tries to modify files or folders out of the "Application_Start" event of the Global.asax file or inside the event you'll need to impersonate your user by code."

But i am not using impersonate and the tag is not in my web.config.

Security Tutorial 7 - User-based Authorization?

Nov 30, 2010

I am going through the Security Tutorials here on ASP.Net. I am currently working on the last part of the Membership - User-Based Authorization. The tutorial covers restricting access to specific pages or to directories using a second Web.Config file. I am running into a problem with the myLogin page DestinationPageURL. Here is what is happening: 1. When the website starts, the Login page opens. 2. If I log in with an existing user, I am sent to the Default.aspx page. That is what is in the yLogin.DestinationPageURL for the login page.

Security :: Send User To Different Pages Based On Their Roles

Nov 19, 2010

I'm using the built-in membership controls and classes to manage authorization and authentication in my app. Here's what I want to do: If the user is in "Manager" role, I want to send him/her to the manager page no matter where he/she came from. If the user is in "Supervisor" role, I want to send him/her to supervisor page no matter where he/she came from. However, if the user is not in any role, just a registered member, I want to send him/her back to where he/she came from as stated in ReturnUrl. If no, ReturnUrl is specified, I will send him/her to the home page.

On my login page, I'm using the Login server control but in my code behind, there's no method wired to the control because the control takes care of everything. I assume I need to add a method and wire it to the submit button, is that right? If so, I'll have to really handle the login event which means I'll need more info about how to do that.

Security :: How To Redirect Logged In User Based On Role

Nov 25, 2010

I want to know how can i redirect a user to a different page when he tries to access a page restricted to another role?

The scenario is as follows:

I have a folder "Gestao" that only allows users in role "Administrator"

If an anonymous user tries to access that folder he is redirected to the login page, but if a logged in user whose role is "friend" tries to access this folder he is also redirected to the login page. I want to redirect him to a page showing a message that he has no permission to access that page/area.

How can I do that? Should i have code on the Page_load event of the login page checking the user role and then redirect him to the correct page? Or is there some otherway to do this?

Security :: Custom Access Denied Page For Role Based Security?

Oct 27, 2010

I have implemented role based security in my 2.0 application using windows authentication and the windowstokenroleprovider and limiting access to certain pages using the location tag to specific active directory groups.

The issue is that when a user tries to access a page they are not authorized to view it brings up a login prompt and when it does not pass it takes them to the default page that tells them they are not authorized to view the page. I am wondering if there is a way to throw up a custom page that tells them they are not athorized to view the page that I can incorporate into the site itself with the header and so forth? if this page could come up in lieu of the sign in box popping up as well.

To Implement Code Access Security, And URL Based Security Using The Roles & Types?

Apr 24, 2010

[ASP.NET 3.5, FormsAuthentication, SQL Server]

In the Roles table there is Role, and RoleType.

I have 3different roles, 2 of which have sub-roles.

I need to implement Code Access Security, and URL based security using the roles & types...

For instance, the (Subscriber/Basic) would need to view a different set of pages, and have different access to things then a (Subscriber/Business).

I think I can handle the Code Access security with a custom attribute, but I am unsure to how enforce a User be apart of 2 roles in the URL Authorization.

I am currently using the web.config to deny/allow access to the directories/pages.

Is it possible to force the user to be apart of 2 roles with this technique?

Security :: How To Redirect To Specific Page Based On User Roles

Sep 12, 2010

I am using Formsauthentication. My situation is as per below:

the login form has codebehind :

protected void LoginButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
TextBox uname = Login1.FindControl("UserName") as TextBox;
TextBox pass = Login1.FindControl("Password") as TextBox;
CheckBox rm = Login1.FindControl("RememberMe") as CheckBox;
Literal fail = Login1.FindControl("Literal1") as Literal;
if (Membership.ValidateUser(uname.Text, pass.Text))

Now the problem is that when I try to login with proper credentials it first redirects to default.aspx( there is no such page in my project), after login again with same credentials it properly redirects to the correct page. Why such problem arises? to fix this?

For example:
