Session Lost When Opening IE Window From Application Hosted In Outlook?
Apr 28, 2010
An ASP.NET application (actually with Silverlight but it doesn't matter) is hosted in Outlook as folder home page. In this application there's a link to open popup window, which opens a separate IE window, not in Outlook.
The problem is that in this case it seems that ASP.NET session is lost. A call to ASP.NET service has nothing in Session and Session._id is different. I suspect that Outlook has different cookies than IE.
How do I preserve session when opening IE popup from Outlook? Maybe pass session id via URL somehow, or configure this in web.config?

I need to open a second browser window or tab, but it must have a different session ID.
Opening the new browser window from an ASP.NET page is easy, but then it shares the same cookie and thus session ID with the original.

Existing applications works fine with IE 6 and 7, the problem occurs only with IE 8. A new session is created everytime a window.open is used to open a new asp page. This does not happen in IE 6 or 7.

I created HttpHandler class in ASP.NET and configured a website to handle any request with the *.test path.
public class GameHandler : IHttpHandler, IRequiresSessionState
{
public bool IsReusable
{
get
{
return false;
[Code]....
I suspect the problem is that ASP.NET doesn't know these requests sent from javascript belong to the same session and that's why the Session values are lost.

I have this code in the end of link button click:
Response.ContentType = "application/zip";
Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=download.zip");
Response.TransmitFile(Server.MapPath("download.zip"));
Response.End();
Response.Flush();
to download a zip file from an aspx page.In the previous page i set a session variable, after going to this download page and download the file, then press back i find the session=null "this happen after downloading more than 1 time", and the application_end in global.ascx called. Do you know why this may happen??Note: this is happening on all browsers, on IIS7 both local and on my server.

I have a web page, that has lists of documents for a user to look at. I have the page working to allow a user to view any of the documents when they click the link. The only thing that wont work is a document that is .msg format for Outlook emails. I did some research and found that in order to get Outlook to open the document when opening a .msg document, you have to add the MIMEType application/vnd.ms-outlook to the list of MIMETypes that IIS will accept. I gave this a shot but still couldn't get it working.
Then what I tried was to output the MIMEType associated with a .msg when I was Saving the document so I could see what it was using. When I did this I got "application/octet-steam" So then I set the .msg extention to use octet stream. This allowed the document to be open, but used Notepad which then had really messed up formatting because of the email headers etc.
Does anyone know how I might get outlook to open up and show the email when a user clicks to view that document as opposed to Notepad?

we are running a click-to-call service, my idea is basically like this: website have a link on their page, when the link is clicked, a web page(say it is popup.aspx) hosted on our server is popup, user can input their phone number, and click "call me" button to let the website call him. In the button click event, I want to get Request.UrlReferrer, then query the db to get website's phone. But in IE, Request.UrlReferrer is null(firefox is ok, not test chrome yet),my question is how to get opening window' url in IE? we put popup.aspx on our server because
our client website is not force to use asp.net. we have the control what we put on the popup window, and can modify the page just from our side, if we put the pop window on our partner's side, if we have 100 partner, and we change the page's design, we will notify everyone of them to change this, change that. we can implement a statics system to know how popup a day, which site is most popular,etc

I need to make my asp.net session cookie as secure but whenever i check user authentication and after that i am trying to set cookie to true then my session lost my user information and so it always redirect login page. I am settings user to HttpContext.Current.Session["user"] and check every time, is user is valid and if valid then move ahead. but before that i make my asp.net session cookie as true.
[Code]....
but after that i observe that somehow "Session_Start" event gets called.

Trying to open up a form in a new window while passing some values. It is working, but it is client side (My ASP co-worker finally grabbed the reigns and implemented a bit of his ASP magic to open the form and transfer the values.) But it's so messy, and I hate the fact that I have been bested by old technology.
I was doing this client side before, using window.open and transfering the variables in the URL, but I was getting flack for doing that. So I looked at alternatives and found session variables, which you set server side. So now we want to open the form. I tried the following (individually): Response.Redirect("OtherForm.aspx") and Server.Transfer("OtherForm.aspx") Which replaced the original form in the open window instead of a new window.
I spent a lot of time searching for a solution but the answer keeps coming back to "Just inject some JavaScript to open your form." Is there no "normal" way to open a form in ASP.NET. In any case I guess the real question I would like to ask is what is the best way to open a child form from a parent form?

I need to open a new window or page keeping the existing page open. I plan to put a Button on the existing page and when a user click the button, a new page or window pops up with what I have coded for that page. My preference would be that the user don't have to tweek any browser options or configure anhing else to open the new window with the click.

The fils containing these control work fine in another project and they work fine on visual studio so I guess it is safe to assume that the problem is not in the files or with the server but has something to do with the project? What could be causing this?

When the user close the popup window, how can I put the value of the session variable back to the server control textbox of the parent window?

I have a form with a field which could be populated manually (by typing in it) or through a window.open popup window. The user just have to select the value in the window and it's written in the field of the parent window (all in javascript).
When I enter the value manually, all is fine. However, when I do it through the popup window the value is correctly written in the parent window and the popup is closed, but the click event of the submit button is not raised when i submit the form. The Page Load event is raised and the IsPostBack is set to false.
