Shared Host Session Timeout

Dec 5, 2011

What are the kind of things that would cause a session to timeout. I know the default is usually 20 minutes. A website I have set up for a friends business seems to timeout after a few minutes sometimes. I think it could be them recycling a shared application pool.

MySQL As Session State Not Working On Shared Host, Only Localhost

Feb 25, 2011

I have encountered this problem before on a few shared hosts but cant remember the fix. I have spent almost 2 days googling and I have even gone through 2 external hd's of backups of old projects and read the web.configs but I just cant put my find it and I dont think I am googling the correct terms...

I am using Mysql Connector/Net to store asp session state.

The mysql db is on the hosting server ( I have no mysql locally).

Opening a page locally creates a session in the db.

Opening a page on the host does not.

I have seen this issue before but was a long time ago and I have searched a few of the answered questions here but not too extensive, I'm sick of searching.

State Management :: Form Timeout Vs. Session Timeout Vs. Connectionstrings Timeout?

Jan 27, 2011

We have the timeout value set to 120 in our <form> tag within the web.config. We do not have a session timeout set.. and we have various connection strings.

We are having a problem where a session variable will disappear (become NULL) .. but, the form evidently remains 'open'.. or no re-login is required..... so, my question(s):

1. what is the relationship between form timeout and session timeout

2. how do I set session timeout

MVC :: Running On Shared-Host Providers?

Jul 25, 2010

i want to run an ASP.NET MVC 2 web application on a .NET 3.5 shared-host provider, I will not mention this provider's name. I will refer to this provider as FOO.

The general community that uses FOO states that it can be done, but the Tech Support at FOO are not consistent:

"What is MVC?" or "Yes, but only on dedicated hosts", or "Yes, it can upon both dedicated and shared hosts" -but they do not know the details.

The general community states that FOO can host ASP.NET MVC 2 on shared hosts, but details on how it is done is inconsistent.

What are general rules of thumb about setting up an ASP.NET MVC 2 for a shared-host environment?

Let us say that we create a vanilla (default) MVC 2 web application from withinVS 2008/2010. What modification should I perform, other than use .NET 3.5 andcopy local System.Web.Mvc.

Getting Security Exception With OpenWebConfiguration On Shared Host?

Oct 13, 2010

After moving my web site from my local development environment to a shared host I get:

Security Exception

Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.

The problem occurs in my web application everywhere the following is called:

WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration(Request.ApplicationPath)

Since my web application is only trying to open it's own web.config file, I don't know why this is flagged as a security exception. Maybe someone can explain... But more importantly I need a solution, the couple solutions I found via Google are painful.

Configuration :: System.OutOfMemoryException In Shared Web Host?

Oct 14, 2010

I have a website that I have run for years running a custom built CMS. It has had no problems ever. I decided to create a demo (temporary url) of the CMS using the exact same website. Only people I give access to would be able to login and change it, so it basically is not in use for the most part.

I tried this demo site the past few days, and I noticed that I kept getting System.OutOfMemoryException errors. I would wait for an hour or so, then it would work. Next day, same thing.

What could explain this? 2 exact same websites....one that is used all the time (no memory issues), and one that is hardly ever used (memory issues). Doesn't really make sense to me.

Web Forms :: Finding Barcode Solution On Shared Host

May 12, 2010

I have a need to generate a barcode on an ASP.NET page. I know how to do this, but the catch is I need this to work on a shared hosting environment. Being a shared host, I don't have the ability to install custom barcode fonts on the server.

Does anyone know of any barcode solutions (possibly open source) that encapsulate fonts in the bin assembly and don't require the barcode fonts to be installed on the server?

Differences In Forms Auth Timeout And Session Timeout?

Feb 1, 2010

The session state timeout is set using this web.config element

<sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="120" />
The forms auth is configured using this web.config element
<system.web>
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="Login.aspx"
protection="All"
timeout="30"
name=".ASPXAUTH"
path="/"
requireSSL="false"
slidingExpiration="true"
defaultUrl="default.aspx"
cookieless="UseDeviceProfile"
enableCrossAppRedirects="false" />
</authentication>
</system.web>

What is the difference between the timeouts specified in each of these elements? If both are different, how would it work?

Configuration :: Deploy VWDE 2010 Application To Shared Host?

Jun 19, 2010

I have a single contact.aspx application I want to use on a web host but am confused with the publish feature in VWDE 2010. I can't run any commands or packages and was hoping just to upload the .aspx and .cs files and have jit compile to run them.

Why does VWDE 2010 create a .dll and .pdb in the bin folder of my project? I thought the Express versions of VS didn't produce DLLs? On previous editions of VWDE all I needed to do was copy the .aspx and .aspx.cs pages to the host.

I have ASP.NET session set to Xmin. I want when X+1 min expires, I have expiration page. what I did was to set the JS timer to validate every x+1min to see if the session expired (the problem is that the JS and the ASP session timeouts are not synced)

Security :: Valid Session Isn't Created On Re-logging In After Session Timeout

Feb 3, 2011

I created a user control for my web application that checks for Session Timeout. If the criteria are met for Timeout, I use Response.Redirect to send the user back to the login page. I include this user control in my Master page, and run the SessionTimeoutcode in the user control's Page_Init event. That all works great. However, once the user logs in again after time-out (and I have verified that the OnLoggedIn event does fire) the user is redirected to the DestinationPageUrl. That page runs the Session Timeout check when it loads (as it should) and the Session Timeout code "says" that the session is still timed-out.

ASP.NET: Session Does Not End, Session Timeout Checks Are In The Home/Customer Action?

Dec 9, 2010

I'm working to set up/correct my session timeout code, and have consulted numerous articles like this one and this SO post for ideas on how best to do this. The solution to detecting a session timeout that I continue to see over and over is to first check the Session.IsNewSession property for true, and if so, then check to see if a session cookie already exists. I guess the logic here is that the user has ended their last session that timed out, started a new session, but the old cookie wasn't yet removed. The code for those checks looks like this:

[CODE]...

The problem is that the session does not end, and all of my session timeout checks are in the Home/Customer action (I use MVC). So I'm redirected to Home/Customer, and I run through the checks above, but when I get to Session.IsNewSession, it's false, because the session is still alive (I assume because I'm still within the 120 minutes I have set)

Way Around Session Being Shared Across Multiple Tab Windows?

May 13, 2010

I'm storing some value in an asp.net session on the first page. On the next page, this session value is being read. However if multiple tabs are opened and there are multiple page 1->page 2 navigation going on, the value stored in session gets mixed up since the session is shared between the browser tabs.I'm wondering what are the options around this :Query String: Passing value between the pages using query string, I don't want to take this approach since there can be multiple anchor tags on page 1 linking to page 2 and I can not rewrite the URLs of each tag since they are dynamic.Cookies??? In-memory cookies are shared across browser tabs too, same as the session cookie, rite ?

How To Set Session Timeout

In ASP.NET application's web.config, I have something like this

<sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="30"/>

Is this the only place where Sessions timeouts are defined Is this timeoout in web.config the only one for all the sessions in the application. Can I not set the session timeouts for each session individually.
IF so, where??

ASP.NET 2.0 Session Timeout

Jul 16, 2010

I have an asp.net 2.0 application which times out after say 15-20 minutes if user didnt do any activity and presses a button on the page(he is redirected to sessionExpired.aspx page). I have set the session timeout to 60 minutes in my web.config file but still somehow the user is timed out.

I have another question related to this regarding the Session Timeout Precedence. Does IIS session timeout take priority over ASP.NET session timeout. Say if IIS session timeout is set to 20 minutes and ASP.NET session timeout is 60 minutes, does ASP.NET override IIS session timeout.

Use Session On A Shared Hosting Server With Load Balancing?

Oct 4, 2010

My website/application is in ASP.NET. I use the traditional Session object when people connect so they have their preference, etc. My problem is that sessions were lost very often. I discovered that my hosting company was using load balancing on their servers, so one request on my website can be on one server, and the other on another one.

I tried to store the session data in a SQL Server database, but I quickly discovered that I can't create the needed database on my shared server because I only have one database in my package. Also, there is no guarantee that the rest of the script would have been able to run.

My questions: is there any other way to get around this problem? Should I buy another database only for this? Is there another type of session that I could use? Is there anything else I can use instead of session to keep track of my user when they are connected on my website?
