Sharing State Databases Between Multiple Apps

Is it better for a collection of ASP.NET web apps to share the same session database, or should each one have its own? If there is no significant difference, having a single database would be preferable due to easier maintenance. Background My team has an assortment of ASP.NET web apps, all written in either Monorail 1.1 or ASP.NET MVC 1.0. Each app currently uses a dedicated session state database. I'm working on adding a new site to that list, and am debating whether I should create another new session database, or just share an existing one with another app.

I have 2 applications. One on asp.net webforms [URL] which should provide authentication, user logs in and I can use the cookie to authenticate on my asp.net mvc app located at [URL]. All I'd like to do is able to access the cookie so I can get the userId that was stored in it using the FormsAuthentication.
They use normal authentication provided by microsoft;

We have several virtual applications inside one main (root) application. How to share Cache between this virtual application and main application if they are located (and always will be) on the same physical machine? By Cache i assuming System.Runtime.Caching or System.Web.Caching. Hope that i do not need to setup AppFabric Caching for this...

If affinity is set to use multi core, aspnet_wp would be run individually on all cores.
So sessionstate, application and cache objects would be core specific. Is this understanding correct ?
Is there a way to share state - session, cache objects?

got [URL] - two separate apps in IIS.
Want the forms based auth to persist (they use the same database for membership)
I tried to simply add a "." before the domain name in the forms tags (see below for example) - but this didn't work - it acutally prevented me from logging in at all. how i can persist the login? Does the admin need the same values for "name", "path" and "domain" as the main site?

I'm having trouble getting 2 identical ASP.NET MVC applications to share the same Session using a Session StateServer. The reason I'm trying to do this is we will eventually be deploying this app across 3 web servers that need to share the same state. We need to use StateServer because we are trying to minimise use of the db for non data-related storage.
The Setup: I've deployed the same code base to http://localhost/App1 and http://localhost/App2
both have identical Web.Config files with the following:

The Result:For both deployments, when the page first loads I can see that the mode is StateServer and the timestamp is getting set to the same time as the realtime value.. However, if this was working, only the first page should have the same time as the realtime value. The second page load should read from the StateServer because that timestamp value is no longer null, and display that time value. But instead, it's displaying the realtime value again.
When I refresh the page, I the timestamp stays the same and the realtime value is always updating. This indicates that the timestamp is being saved to the Session, but the time stamp value is always different for both deployments when it should be the same, so this indicates that the Session is not being shared.

In my website I am maintaining cookies for the login so that if I open the browser again then no need to login again.
But when I am switching browser(from ie to ff or viceversa) then the cookies are lost and the user is not identified, I want to maintain them in this scenario also.

I have spent hours on the forum trying to find this answer. I have a requirement on a project. There is an internal (intranet employees only) site which has much more control over the data etc. and i have an external site (to allow customers to enter usage data). I am using forms auth and hitting a common sql server 2008 db with the standard aspnet schema. I have an internal web server and an external web server both windows 2003. The problem that i am having is that if you are logged into the external site and then open a new ie window and enter into the internal site, even as a different user it logs you out of the external and vice versa. I don't have access to update the machine config.
I started out as a single app in the db but now have seperated into 2 apps and i am able to log in as an external admin and see only the external users and vice versa. Creating a seperate security only db for the external app is not an option because i have a I have the application name listed in the web.config for both internal and external which matches the app name in the aspnet_applications table.

We have a server with lets say 5-10 internal ASP.NET (MVC) applications running in separate application pools as separate websites (on different ports and/or subdomains). I know nothing about the built-in ASP.NET authentication framework, so I was wondering if anyone could drop me a quick pointer in the right direction...
I want to secure all of the internal apps via one login mechanism (supporting 3-5 different roles; nothing complex). This login system would be another app/website running on the server, and to gain access to any other app, one must have authenticated via the one login system and the target app must be able to see the user's role. The internal apps will be modified at the code level to plug into this new login system (in other words, we'll modify the current apps to support the authentication).
The whole point of this is that I don't want each app to have its own login/authentication mechanism, but rather use a more "global" authentication system (everything on the same server). I am not looking for anything complex (just a company of 15-25 employees, 3-5 departments - each user must be associated with a department (role) based on their login - and each app will be tuned to show the user the appropriate data based on his role).
The question is - how do I make it so that a user's authentication status is visible across all of the different apps (in different assemblies and running separately)?

I have a website A which has a link to website B which is currently opening in a different window. When clicked on a link to, the login for B is automatically taken care of as both the websites have same user login credentials.
Now a change in the system has made me embed website B into website A. ie., B will open in the same window of A.. I could achieve this using an IFrame. Now, the session from site A needs to be carried out to site B. Presently, when navigated from A to B, all the sessions on A expire. Once navigated to B the session time out of B from the webconfig is taken. I have used "InProc" as my state management option in web config. Is it possible to maintain single session for both the webistes? If not how to continue same session times for both webistes? I do not want to use "SQL server" state mode.

how do i pass data between two asp.net webservice sessions ?
this is the scenario, we've windows application and web service. our windows app calls a third party web site which requires data from our applciation. this 3rd party suggested that we create a web service that they can call from the web site.
after some reading it looks like i can use "application" object to store the data so that we store data in session with a specific session key and give it to web site and web site passes this session key in all methods it uses in webservice. is this best approach to take ?

I have an asp.net solution in which there are two web application projects (client website and admin website) and also a class liabrary project in the same solution . In the live production server, the admin web app is within the client app (eg: client site= [URL] and admin site=[URL]). A class (with static variables) in class liabrary is userd to cache data. My problem is that i cannot get the changes to the static cache by one web project reflected to the other (becoz, i think, they seem to load in seperate appdomains).

After doing some research, I found that <sessionState> can be hosted in SQL Server allowing applications to read from the same source. Essentially my app has two sides: a WCF library and an ASP.NET MVC 3 web site, the WCF has authentication and other DB IO methods and the MVC does the display. Now, the MVC stores a value in the session and then the WCF reads it and creates another for the MVC to read later. Problem is, neither can read each others session data, they can write to the same repository but can't share.
How do I go about them sharing the same information? How can I tell <sessionState> that the session started on the MVC side is the same as the WCF side and viceversa? I've tried

i have two solutions, 1. user management and 2. travel management. i publish the user management solution to [URL] and i publish the travel management to [URL] here i face the problem. the default home page would be [URL], its a windows authentication in page load, i capture the username, pass it to procedure which will fetch me his credentials on access. i store these in a session.
in the home page i have link to navigate to travel page, when i try to access the sessions in travel page, its empty. i tried printing the session id in both user management and travel, both are same but the sessions created in user management are empty in travel. what would be problem here and how can i resolve this.

If I want to share cookies among applications, applications need to be in the same domain. In production it is no problem. But I have problem with development. If I run those applications in Visual Studio, it runs application in "localhost" and it is not same domain. I don`t see cookies among applications.

I maintain a college website. I also create various small web apps for the college (staff directory, online credit schedules, etc.). Currently, I have been using VS2010 and clicked on File - New Web Site - ASP.NET Empty Web Site for the main college website and File - New Web Site - ASP.NET Dynamic Data Entities Web Site for each of my apps.
Each is in its own separate directory in my development environment. The main site is "published" via VS2010's Copy Web Site tool in the Solution Explorer. The individual web apps are copied into unique physical directories on the Web server, and then via IIS7 Manager, a virtual directory is created on the college's web site for each app.
I have now run into a situation where I would like to create a new web app that utilizes some of the images and master pages from the college's web site. How do I create a New Web Site in VS2010 that can see/recognize/access the files from another web site? Namely, the college's main web site.

I have 2 applications App1 and App2 on same domain, both with Forms authentication, each using a different database instance for authentication.
First, I open a browser with application www.mydomain.com/App1 and log on.
After that, when I open another instance of the same browser with application www.mydomain.com/App2 and log on, first browser loses session and goes back to login page.
I need each application on same domain to have its own session so that both can stay logged on.

We have about 50 web-sites, running in different application pools, that read from a common cache database (using Microsoft Enterprise Library Caching application block). We currently have a console application which populates the cache at 3AM every morning. However, we want to get rid of this application and get the cache to automatically refresh expired items, using the ICacheItemRefreshAction interface.
We were going to create our cache object in the Global.asax of each of the 50 web-sites. However, my concern is that if we set a cache-expiration policy in Global.asax, that each of the 50 web-sites will trigger a refresh action, causing the data to be re-cached 50 times. We don't want only 1 web-site to set the expiration policies, as then the 49 other web-sites will have a dependency on that 1 web-site, and that's an architecture no-no.

I have two different IIS applications within the same domain(let us say www.mydomain.com) , both of these applications use the same database instance(same connectionstring), now what I want is that both of applications can see each sessions variables , can SQL Server session state mode helps in this case? Did someone try that before? Is there any other way to share the session variables?

I am currently working on a project which involves three different websites with a lot of common functionality. At the moment the common functionality is placed in a different website full of user controls.
The problem is sharing the user controls across the multiple websites. Looking around on SO and other websites, the only solution seems the be using virtual directories. As this is a workable solution (we us this at the moment) it doesn't seem as a "clean" solution.
Which "best practices" exist on sharing common functionality (including the GUI/HTML) between different site?
Is it (for example) possible to create a single Web Application project and deploy subdirectories (each with their own web.config) to different production environments?

I have a ScriptControl that uses an image as an embedded resource and GetWebResourceUrl to generate the WebResource.axd URL. I am currently using GetScriptDescriptors() to send the URL to the JavaScript object.The ScriptControl can be in a Repeater, so you may have 20+ instances. They all use the same images (not customizable through property), so I would like to set the URL once in a variable and share it. I know I could register a script block with a global variable, but would like to avoid that if possible. Is there a way to set a variable within the scope of the control type (global -> control type -> control instance)?
