State Management :: Session And Application Cache Items Disappear?

Mar 31, 2010

i've been coding an asp.net site using VS2005 for about one month.

my site uses both application cache and session cache to save data.

the syntax i use for application cache is :

HttpApplicationState appState = Application;
appState["someKey"] = "somevalue";

and for session cache i use :

HttpContext.Current.Session["someKey"] = "Somevalue";

my site is deployed on three standalone servers - each server runs a diffrent instance of the site.

two of the servers work just fine, the third has a stange problem - and also has the least free memory space.

in this server items start dissapearing from both the session and application cache - note that i set no expiration date to the cache items.

does anyone know why this could happen?

seems to me there is perhaps some memory limit for cached items setting that i am missing.

State Management :: Session State For Listview Items?

Aug 30, 2010

I have a listview control, in it each item will have a checklist eg - Pass / Fail which will then have a label displaying the selected value. I also have datapager wired up to the listview.

When i toggle between the datapages and toggle back, any result previously submitted will be wiped.

I am thinking i should be using session state to temporarily store then info, and then once the session is finished use a submit button to send all values and ids into an xml.

1. Is this the right way of approaching the situation?

2. How would i specify session state for listview items, eg would i angle it through a itemdatabound event or the application itself?

State Management :: Storing Dataset In Application Cache?

Nov 29, 2010

I am writing a web page that returns a small volume of data from a database table. The database is polled every 1 second and the data will be the same for every user. As every user is accessing the same data, there is no need for each user to poll the database and use up db resource.

Therefore, I think I should be using application caching to store the data in a dataset. However, I am slightly stumped as to how to do this.... because how can i ensure that the dataset is kept up to date.

The only way I can think to do this is to have a master user/session (i.e. the first session in the application) that keeps the cache object updated every second, then other users can use that cache object. If the first session ends, then the next requestor of the cache will pick up responsibility for keeping the dataset up to date.

State Management :: Cache Settings On Shared Application Pool?

Sep 17, 2010

I have several web applications on a server using the same application pool. The worker process usually takes a lot of ram but usually only from one application. I can successfully limit the cache usage by setting "PrivateBytesLimit" in web.config file when the application uses it own dedicated application pool.

Does anyone know how this setting will be applied when using shared application pool? Is it per application, per worker process or per application pool? Also if it is not per application which setting from which application will be applied?

State Management :: Session Object Not Saving Items Inside UpdatePanel

Jun 23, 2010

I have a multiview inside an updatepanel. in one of the views, I save a value in a session object like this:

Session["xyz"] = "some string value";

Then I switch to another view and try to pick it up the value in a button's OnClick event:

string x = Session["xyz"].ToString();

But I get a null reference error. Debugging it shows that Session["xyz"] is indeed null, yet other Session variables are still there. Is there something special about Session and AJAX?

State Management :: Session State Expiration After Application Pool Recycle?

Nov 1, 2010

All we have a global ships position tracking website which runs smoothly until IIS application pool recycles.When there is workerprocess recycling looks like session state expires as a result i loose all session data and when customer clicks refresh button he is redirected to login page.

In web.config Session state mode is set to InProc so i changed it to State Server but to my luck i have MAP object which is not serialiazable which is causing the maps from not appearing on the website.I tried adding serializable attribute to the object class but still not succesfull.Our website is accessed by our customers whose count is more than 1000.

Changing the session state mode from InProc to StateServer can really slow down the response time so
Is it good to go further fix the serailizable issues and move to state server?.

Is there any way I can retain my session data when application pool recyles?..

Stopping Application pool from recycling may not be a good idea considering health factor of web server.

State Management :: Application State And Session State?

Oct 2, 2010

User Interface: 2 Labels; 1 Buttons

Requirements: Create a Web Page in ASPx that will do the following:

1)One label will provide a count of how many times Button 1 has been clicked in the current session.

2)One label will provide a count of how many times Button 1 has been clicked by all users of the application. The Application Code for the Button should start at 100 (set this in the Global.asax file). this is what i have so far but i cant seem to get the application state to work properly.

State Management :: Session Suddenly Times Out On One Application?

Aug 10, 2010

I have a web application that was working fine. I had to make minor changes that had nothing to do with the Session object in any way. When I run local everything works fine. When I publish to our testing box it all runs fine. When I publish to production it times out on the Session object. Dozens of other applications on the production server run fine and have no trouble with Session.

It does not matter if the line is:

Session("PreferredName") = sPreferredName
or:
sPreferredName = Session("PreferredName")

I had the server admin remove the application pool and directory and recreate them and then I republished and it still happens.

New-Cache Parameters For AppFabric Cache When Storing.NET Session State

Jul 28, 2010

What are the "optimal" parameters for creating an AppFabric cache when you will be storing session state in the cache? MSDN Cache-Related Commands

Powershell command line:

New-Cache [-CacheName] <String> [-Eviction <String>] [-Expirable <String>] [-Force [<SwitchParameter>]] [-NotificationsEnabled <String>] [-Secondaries <Int32>] [-TimeToLive <Int64>]

[code]...

Since I don't want my sessions to be removed unless the session has been abandoned either via code or Session Timeout...For eviction, I would think "None" and for expireable, I would think False.I have tested and calling Session.Abandon does remove the object from the cache. I have also tested to see if by extending my session, the session object in cache is also extended. This does seem to work the "correct" way.

State Management :: Session Variable And Multiple Web Application Instance

Oct 13, 2010

I have a web application using window authentication. There are a search page and a edit page in the application. In search page, user can enter some search criterias in the textboxes and the search result will be displayed in the gridview by clicking the "Search" button. User can select any row from the gridview and it will take him to the edit page. In the edit page, there is a "Back" button to take the user back to the search page. I use session variables to remember what the search criterias the user entered in the textboxes and what page number the user was in the gridview. So when the user goes back to the search page, the textboxes are pre-populated with the search criterias and the gridview is displayed in the correct page number.

The problem is: If user1 opened one browser window and did a search using search criterias1, then user1 opened a 2nd browser window and did a search using search criterias2. When the user1 went back to the search page from the edit page using the first browser window, all the textboxes and page numbers are from the 2nd browser window, instead of the 1st one. Can anyone explain this problem to me and how to prevent it? It will be helpful too if you can give me some links about the similar problem. I am thinking if the same user logged on two different machines and did the search on each machine, what is the result?

State Management :: Save Session Data To Oracle 10g R 2 In Application?

Feb 26, 2011

I am creating a web application that will be running on an infrastructure which will utilise a number of web servers, web gardens and a load balancer.

As the application is using Sessions, and that our application is using Oracle as the database, we would like to use the database to save the Session data. However, I am struggling to find any good examples on how to do this with Oracle.

I note that Oracle provides the following class: Oracle.Web.SessionState.OracleSessionStateStore, but I am unsure what I need to do in the Code Behind and what if any tables do I need to create in the database.

State Management :: Cache Always Removes Itself?

Aug 11, 2010

I have some weird problem. We're using Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 (8 Cores and
8 GB RAM) with IIS 7.5 and ASP.NET MVC 2.

I always cache (simple) stuff via the context cache and it seems like 9 out of 10 immediate page refreshs the Cache["MyKey"] is always null, even though there's no memory limit set on the pool and the server has lots of free memory.

I add expiring data via:

[Code]....

When just doing: Cache.Insert("MyKey", myObject); or Cache["MyKey"] = myObject; I get the same result (cache is almost always null for that key).

As you can see I added a callback, which writes the CacheItemRemovedReason to a text file, and the text file says CacheItemRemovedReason.Removed for MyKey. The doc for CacheItemRemovedReason.Removed says, that I call Remove/Insert on it, even though in my whole project there's no "Remove"-calls, just simple if(Cache["MyKey"] == null) {Cache["MyKey"] = ...} stuff.

I tried adding:

<caching><cache disableMemoryCollection = "true" disableExpiration = "true" privateBytesLimit="0" percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit="90" privateBytesPollTime="00:02:00" /></caching>

to my web.config file in the System.Web-section but nothing changed :(

why Cache["MyKey"] is almost always null?
