To Know Whether A Web Page Is Built Using PHP, JSP, Or Other Technologies?
May 15, 2010
I often come across some nice web sites and I want to know what technologies (PHP, JSP, ASP.NET, etc) are used to build those web sites.The web address of some web sites end with ".aspx", ".php", ".jsp", etc. But some web address do not contains any indicators.Is there any systematic way we can use to know the technologies used by a web site?

I'm running into a weird issue that I can't find an answer for anywhere I've looked (and I've looked a ton).I built a web deployment project with Visual Studio 2008 Team System on my old Win XP machine. This has always worked flawlessly and installed everywhere. I can also copy this MSI to my new Windows 7 Ultimate machine and it again installs just fine.
HOWEVER, when I rebuild that exact same web deployment project on my new Win7 machine, also using VS2008, the MSI will build OK, but when I then run it to install my software I get a dialog box telling me "the installer was interrupted." Interestingly, when I built this MSI in my new environment one additional warning popped up during the build process, which was "Unable to copy the schema file '(null)'"After many searches and reading different web pages, I know this has to do with these two registry keys:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftVisualStudio9.0DeploymentSchema]
"DefaultMSISchemaFile"="c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\Tools\Deployment\Vspkgs\..\VsdSchema\Schema.msi"
"DefaultMSMSchemaFile"="c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\Tools\Deployment\Vspkgs\..\VsdSchema\Schema.msm"
Yet, everything checks out. All permissions are correctly configured, etc., etc.Then, when I enable the built-in administrator account and log in as that, and then rebuild this same web deployment MSI the "Unable to copy the schema file '(null)'" warning no longer appears. Then when I log back out, log back in as myself and then run this newly built MSI it installs fine, just like the original one that was built on XP.I also tried uninstalling VS2008 and re-installing it as the super user, but that also didn't change anything. And yes, I did also configure devenv.exe to run as administrator.
Has anybody seen this? Or is it a requirement that you can only compile deployment projects as the super user? That cannot be right.I've been thrashing for more than five days and for the life of me cannot figure this out. Of course, I can run as the super user when developing, but I thought the new security model in Win7 was designed exactly so you don't have to.

I have a situation where I'm using a single Masterpage and two Content Pages. The Master page basically contains a menu built using an HTML Table. The one Content Page contains the marjority of my site content. The way the menu works is that when user selects a menu item, a javascript function executes that evaulates which menu item was selected.
Now, this is where I'm not sure what to do next. Should I load the next Content Page in this javascript function or somewhere in the CodeBehind of the Content Page? I'm trying to find examples where I can load a page using Javascript but not having any luck.

My background is asp.net development and I took part in several projects where developer team was free to choose server-side programming technology (PHP, ASP.NET[Web Forms/MVC], JSP) & free to buy any CMS. Looking backward I realize technology & approach we chose often wasn't the best one. I'll enumerate some projects: One web portal (ASP.NET Web Forms) - Originally It was .Net Nuke every developer knew nothing about & was snobbish enough to learn. Previous team modified Nuke engine the way it couldn't be upgraded (they added rows and relations to standard tables). So we rewrote it from the scratch. Big mistake. We spent a year to achieve previous functionality. Business felt trapped - they could not fire us and could not stand us. Another web portal (ASP.NET Web Forms) - Portal was very specific (trading) so we start developing from the scratch. Everything was fine half a year but as project grew business wanted to see more and more basic functionality (forums, blogs). May be we should wrote lots of modules for standard cms instead of developing from scratch. One specific 5-paged site with massive reporting - ASP.NET MVC and it was ok. Several small specific questionnaires - ASP.NET MVC and it was ok also. There were projects where I had to support legacy web systems and there was no choice. I feel (and it's very subjective) that server-side technologies niches are the following (when you have a choice what to choose):
Standard company sites & blogs/forums/communities (the most part of all web development) - is PHP CMS area (Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal e.t.c.). If team has asp.net background they should choose asp.net CMS (Nuke, Sharepoint) Small / Specific sites - PHP/ASP.NET niche (but if it can grow choose CMS from the very beginning) Intranet company ecosystems - ASP.NET mostly (CMS or not) I know every task can be accomplished with technologies you are most familiar with, but what do you think of nowadays niches? Shall developers use CMS for every site larger than 3 pages as every site functionality tends to grow and there are lots of modules written for us? Even if site looks too specific it's better to write modules for well-known CMS than to write sites from scratch. What is JSP niche?

We're planning to build a web application that needs to be highly secure because a lot of money and reputation is at risk. Therefore I'm looking for tools and technologies that in that endeavor. The tools and technologies should prevent things like SQL injection, cross-site scripting vulnerabilities, remote code execution etc.
Our team has a solid knowledge about such vulnerabilities. But every developer makes mistakes, and a simple mistake shouldn't lead to a security vulnerability. They should be prevented or detected by web application framework, application server, programming language, security library, code analyzer etc.
A simple example: If you insert data into HTML, it needs to be escaped so it's properly displayed and not misused for injecting scripts. Some web application frameworks put this burden on the developers. If they forget the escaping in one place, they've got a security problem. A good tool wouldn't just do the escaping automatically, it would even prevent the developers from doing it forcefully.
I'm not looking for recommendations regarding the firewall (we have a good one), hardening the operating system (that's part of the plan), use of encrypted communication (it will be the only option) and secure authentication (a hardware token will be used). Rather, the recommendations should center around the application server and the web application software to be built.
We also fully understand that writing secure software is more than just technology: It involves knowledgable people, management attention, time and money and software quality processes. So far, this is not the problem and not the focus of this question.
I should mention that we have a certain bias towards Java and .NET.
So what tools and technologies or combinations thereof can you recommend us?

I am having a scenario, where i need to decode ASP.NET FormsAuthentication Cookie in other language to accomplish Single Sign-On.
I am having a ASP.NET website, that also has WCF Authentication service. But I have just come know that even Java and PHP Application are also going to use my Authentication Gateway to authenticate user and so enable Single Sing-On.
I am done with the same in .NET application but to perform same in non-.NET techs, I need to decode FormsAuthentication Cookie of browser. FormsAuthentication Cookie are Encrypted so there must exist a algorithm that can decode it or a kind of dll that I can load in Java and read it.

This is a question for who works with both PHP and ASP.NET/C#/VB.I plan on learning both languages over time, but I am curious in the order you learned both technologies? And Why?Maybe you just chose by time/ease to become good in the language or you just prefer one language over the other.I want to learn both technologies so, if for some reason my projects don't workout, I have a backup plan as a web developer for clients. I would really like to service both sides of the isle, Windows and LAMP

I have been using LINQ to SQL for quite a while (about two years). Every thing was fine until now. As usual, I created LINQ to SQL classes and built the project, then created an aspx page. However, I cannot see the DataClassesDataContext in the code behind file. It is not listed in the intellisense list.

Scenario is I have a application relative url like "~/path/to/page.aspx?query=string". I need to programatically create a web request to that page and currently using WebRequest.Create. The problem is WebRequest.Create requires a fully qualified url including the protocol/domain/port etc.I have access to the current Request.Url object but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get just the base url keeping the protocol (HTTP vs HTTPS) as well as any port numbers as well as the path to the applicationI mean all the info there, so if need be I could just take all the parts and combine them but it seems like it might be error prone and it would be great to have something built-in that's well tested to do the job. Page.ResolveUrl gets me almost there, but it's missing the protocol and the domain/port.

I am working on a project for a client that started out as a simple CMS with pages, posts, and a directory. The client is constantly expanding the scope of this project with requirements for customization of just about everything. As a single developer, I am having trouble keeping up with the clients time-table. I have googled for software packages that might already exist that proved the features my client needs but I have not found anything. Does anyone know of any pre-built software that allows for the following customization or at least better words to describe this type of package?Here are some examples of the customization that is requested:
A page or directory listing needs to be formatted from an admin-defined template. Within this template there needs to be admin-defined sections that contain admin-defined data types. (This is so the look and feel of the site can be maintained while users can easily build content, add listings, and etc.)Advertising-tiles need to be able to be defined and populated globally and at page level.All user generated content, pages, posts, and directory listings need to be associated with user and have flexibility to show all other user generated content for inter-linking between same users content.Site would need billing/e-commerce system for premium listings, premium posts, advertising tiles, and etc.Approval system for all user added or edited content (pages, posts, directory listings, etc.)

This is my doubt.For example, select "Getting started" forum in asp.net site. It lists lots of threads.Whenever i click on the thread new page will be open. For example if i click a thread means it will opens a page "http://forums.asp.net/t/1535090.aspx" and if i click another thread means it will open other page "http://forums.asp.net/t/1535453.aspx".
My question is for each thread is there asp.net team maintains separate pages like (1535090.aspx, 1535453.aspx etc). Whats the logic behind this one?Please explain. I'm also try to want built the forum like this.

I have my project made from my pc and when I tried to open the solution from other computer, change the connectionStrings and run it. I'm receiving a message:
The source file is different from when the module was built. Would you like the debugger to use it anyway?
This appear when the program try to run my class, SqlHelper.vb. And when I select Yes, the program still uses the old SqlHelper.vb class (with the old connectionString).

I have a reporting module (C# asp.net) that uses dynamic controls to represent the varying parameters of the selected reports.The dynamic controls build and display fine (XML stored in SQL Server 2008 and XSLT for the transform into HTML).My problem is that I have a drop down list(not dynamically created) that contains the report names as text and the report id's as the value. This DDL posts back when its selected index changes. When the DDL posts back, a session and viewstate variable containing the selected report id is populated. I want to read this variable and use it to generate the dynamic parameter controls.

I am taking some time to learn how to develop asp.net mvc2 websites, but I'm used to working directly off IIS instead of the built-in web server that uses the random ports when you hit F5.
but I've noticed that using the built-in webserver, requests fly and are immediate. I am using only the default project with the Home and About pages as it comes out of the New ASP.NET MVC 2 Project settings, no database connections, nothing beyond the base install...
but when I setup the IIS website and pointed it to the same directory, each request takes at least 3-5 seconds to complete, sometimes more. this isn't just the "load" on the first request. EVERY request takes this long on IIS. but if I F5 and test the project once again, everything zips and the responses are immediate.
