Turn Off Input Validation For A Single Field?
Sep 27, 2010
I've got an ASP.NET 4 site on which I want to allow people to put '<' in their password. However, .NET gets in the way by blocking (what it sees as) an attempt to put HTML in a form field. I know I can turn off input validation entirely, but I only want to turn it off for this one field. Does anyone know an easy way to do that?

I have some code where I need two separate required field validators for one control, both in separate validation groups which are then validated by two separate buttons.This approach works well when the buttons are clicked but both validators show if I enter a value in the textbox and then remove it.
Is there a way to turn this"lost focus" validation off? I only need it to validate when the buttons are clicked.
EDIT,Unfortunately, if I set EnableClientScript=false then I dont have any client notifications. What I want is for the dynamic error message to show (effectivly in the OnClientClick event of the button) but not the "lost focus" of the textbox.Is there some way I can disable or "unhook" the lostfocus client event?
EDIT,A combination dDejan's answer and womp's answeer here sorted the problem perfectly.
My final code looks like this (for anyone else with a similar situation)...
Javascript...
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() { [code]....
So, now there is no validation until a user clicks either the "Get Email Confirmation Code" button or the "Register" button. If they click the "Get Email Confirmation Code" button all of the controls validate apart from the textbox where the user is to input the email validation code and we only see one validator message.
If they click the "Register" Button then all of the controls validate and we only see one validation message.If either button is pressed, the user goes back, adds and then removes some text then we only see one validator. Before this change you used to see both messages saying the same thing.

I'm a total newbie with MVC -- learning it with MVC3 using Razor.
I just watched the video on PluralSight and was just following along with the example. I created my own Movie and MovieRepository objects. I then created a strongly typed view for adding a new movie. This is what's in the view:
[Code]....
My Movie object looks like this:
[Code]....
If I click submit without entering anything in the input field, I get validation messages i.e. The Rating field is required or if I enter non-numeric data, I get The field Rating must be a number.
I didn't wire this and wanted to understand where this is coming from.

I have always been able to turn off request validation on IIS and cassini when I need to post HTML from an HTML Editor. Problem is I can't seem to do so on IIS express. Have tried the following:

I have a wizard style MVC 2.0 application, when I move forward I want client side validation to kick in and validate the form, but when I hit the back button I want the data entered by the user posted back to the server so I can save what they have entered, but without any client validation.

Recently I was looking at a set of 3rd party controls. One of these controls turned the background of a textbox red when a required field validation failed and then turned the background back to its original color when validation succeeded.I would like to add similar functionality to when using the asp.net 2.0 controls, but I have no idea how this was accomplished.

i have a view model with a property like this one :
[RegularExpression(@"^d+$", ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof(Resources.Validation), ErrorMessageResourceName = "NumberValidationMsg" )]
public int? Number {get; set;}
NumberValidationMsg resource is set to "Only numbers allowed !".
but when I try to enter something like 'test' into Number field on form, ModelState displays the ErrorMessage with content similar to :
"The value 'test' is not valid for Number."
can this message be turned off, customized? (or maybe the best solution would be just to replace int? with string)

I have a DetailsView on the page and I have made one of the fields a TemplateField. In the EditItemTemplate and InsertItemTemplate I have a DropdownList that is databound to a table in my Sql Server database. I wanted to add an initial value to the DropdownList
namely "- select -" .
I set the AppendDataBoundItems property to true and added the initial value as a ListItem.Markup of the DropdownList
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList_HP" runat="server"
AppendDataBoundItems="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource_HP" [code]...
This works fine for new input. The problem is however that the database already has records that were entered through a Windows Application and many of these records has a null value in this field and exceptions are thrown when I tried to open these records
and the system tried to set the SelectedValue of the DropdownList.After some more searching I found this help
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms366709.aspx
So I changed the ListItem in the DropDownList markup to the following:
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList_RefHospDV4" runat="server"
AppendDataBoundItems="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource_RefHosp" [code]...
This now solved the problem of opening a record where the value is null in the database, BUT now the RequiredFieldValidator is not validating anymore to make sure that a databound item is selected for this field and not the initial value "- select -". So basically now it is not checking anymore to see if valid input has been entered for the DropDownList and it accepts "- select -" thus it acts as if the field is not a required field anymore.
In short what is required is that I want to make sure that the user enters a valid selection in the DropDownList, but it must also cater for old records that do not have this field entered yet so that those old records can be opened in the DetailsView .Opening Old records (with null in that field):When these old records are opened in the DetailsView the DropDownlist should show "- select -" when the value in the database is null.
Saving records (old or new records):When saving the record in Insert mode or Update mode the RequiredFieldValidator should show that a valid input is not selected if the DropDownList is still on "- select -".

What is the common practice of input validation? In other words do you check for input validation on client-side, on server-side or on both sides?
Also, if performance is crucial to me, would just the client-side input validation be sufficient for my website without presenting any security risks?

I'm working on an application that has a large number of inputs for certain types (50 money inputs, 30 date inputs etc). I have been creating an CompareValidator for each one to make sure users are putting in the correct information but I am curious if there is an easier way to create the validation once and apply it to all desired inputs? Writing out 80 validators that do basically the same thing seems like a waste. Am I missing something that already does this in .NET or are there anything out there that can make validation easier?
Note: All validation needs to be done on both the client AND server side. I've read a little about ASP.NET MVC validation but unfortunately that won't be an option here.

I am making some change to my MVC app to allow user to modify their existing email address contained in the profile. I have 'email' and 'confirm email' fields both which load the existing email address when the user enters the edit page (both textboxes are loaded from the same database field). The issue I am having is that when the user edits the 'email' text field and forgets or enters a different address into the 'confirm' field, validation occurs and instead of retaining what the user entered it loads what's contained in the Model when it tried to save into both fields once again (to the user it would appear that validation should not have occurred). I would like validation to fire and retain what the user initially entered in the text boxes.
For example, if the original email address is [URL] and the user enters [URL] for the 'email' address and forgers or enters a different address into the 'confirm' field, validation fires and loads [URL] into both because that's what was captured during the attempted Save. I would like for [URL] to remain in the 'confirm' textbox, or if the user entered something that never matched that would remain.
How can I get around this but still have the existing email address load into both fields when the user initially enters the 'Edit' area?

Search thru the wauy to do view input validation, have seen quite often refers this [Required], eg:
public class ProductViewModel {
[Price(MinPrice = 1.99)]
public double Price { get; set; }
[Required]
public string Title { get; set; }
}
What this [Required] actually is? In which assembly?

Simple question. I have the following hidden input field on my ASP.NET page:
<form id="userform" method="post" action="RankingPage.aspx">
<input type="hidden" id="email" />
<input type="hidden" id="name" />
</form>
I'm trying to get the data from the field (in my code behind) like this:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string name = Request.Form["name"].ToString();
}
It's returning a null reference (which I'm assuming means it couldn't find the field). Am I doing this wrong?

I am having a hard time attempting to update a single field without having to retrieve the whole record prior to saving.
For example, in my web application I have an in place editor for the Name and Description fields of an object. Once you edit either field, it sends the new field (with the object's ID value) to the web server. What I want is the webserver to take that value and ID and only update the one field. There are only two ways google tells me to do this:
1) When I get the value I want to change, the value and the ID, retrieve the record from the database, update the field in the c# object, and then send it back to the server. I don't like this method because not only does it include a completely unnecessary database read call (which includes two tables due to the way my schema is).
2) Set UpdateCheck for all the fields (but the primary keys) to UpdateCheck.Never. This doesn't work for me (I think) due to my mapping layer between the Linq to Sql and my Entity/ViewModel layer. When I convert my entity into the linq to sql db object it seems to be updating those fields regardless of the UpdateCheck setting. This might be just because of integers, since not setting an int means it is a zero (and no, I can't use int? instead).

If I have a 3 layer web forms application that takes user input, I know I can validate that input using validation controls in the presentation layer. Should I also validate in the business and data layers as well to protect against SQL injection and also issues? What validations should go in each layer?
Another example would be passing a ID to return a record. Should the data layer ensure that the id is valid or should that happen in BLL / UI?

I am REALLY new to ASP.NET MVC, and it is alien to my way of thinking.In my project, I have managed to get as far as allowing the user to add, edit or delete entries from a table. What I want to do is ensure that a specific field (i.e. "Tank_Number") does not get duplicated. What is the correct way to implement this?
I would like to use custom validation in the model class, the reason being the handy error messages, but am getting more confused as I read more articles. At the moment, I am using an If statement in the Controller, but it isn't ideal.
Here is my example code:
Controller [Code]....
Model
[Code]....
View
