How can I disable the code behind validation when javascript validation is present? Then if there is no javascript enabled then the code behind validation will do its thing. What I notice is that it's reading the code behind valdiation not the javascript.

How To Grow A Textbox To Match Size Of Input For Data Entry Dynamically

Feb 3, 2010

I'd like to add a description field to an application that can be as long as several lines (or even paragraphs) or as short as a one-liner.Instead of taking up a lot of screen real estate or have scroll bars, it would be preferable to have the textbox grow based on its input.

On IE6 adding Style="overflow-y:visible" accomplishes this nicely (both on display of read only, and if we are in edit mode).

However, it has no effect on Firefox, or IE7 for that matter.

How To Manage Complex Data Entry Validation

Oct 18, 2010

I feel like I am fighting against the current when I develop ASP.NET Webform apps. I frequently run into the same problems, and while I eventually find some kind of workaround i'm never fully satisfied with the results.

Here is an example of a typical problem:

The design requires a grid or grid-like result set. This result set is pulled from a database, however, there are additional controls on each row that are not data bound, but their contents are used to insert data into other records.

A good example of this would be displaying a list of products, then adding selected products to a shopping cart based on values entered into quantity fields, and options selected per product. Throw into the mix that you have to allow multiple lines to be added to the cart at the same time, and it starts to get more complex.

Let's add to that mix that you can't select certain products together (mutually exclusive), that you can only select a certain number of one product, but not another, that prices may change while the user is selecting their items, that you you get an overall discount per item based on quantity purchased (both per item and overall order), that you are using a line of credit and cannot exceed the line of credit, nor can you buy more of a given item than an arbitrary amount set in your account or in the product by your account representitive (think certain over the counter medications that the government limits how many you can buy), etc.. etc.. etc..

What starts out as a simple grid with an add to cart becomes a hopeless mess of business logic, which then of course requires validation and notification to the user of various errors in their choices.

How does one deal with very complex data entry schemes in asp.net? How do you even begin to design a piece of software to do all this?

MVC :: The Form Is Submitted, The Server Side Validation Trips And I'm Told The Entry Is Invalid?

Jun 27, 2010

I've got my validation wired up through my Service layer, and my Birthdate property looks like this.

[Code]....

The client side validation works properly if I input something like `12/12/1990` but when the form is submitted, the server side validation trips and I'm told the entry is invalid. I'm using the jQuery-UI Datepicker to input the date, however when I disable the datepicker, the problem persists.Am I missing something here? I thought the client side and server side would be the same thing.If I remove

[Code]....

Then the form submits. It's obviously something to do with the Regex.

Web Forms :: Disable ESC Key Validation?

Oct 1, 2010

I have a page that has a submit button which causes validation and a cancel button which does not cause validation.

When the cancel button is clicked, the button's click event handler is executed with no problem.

I would like the ESC key to do exactly what the cancel button does.

What we do is to trap the ESC key and then raise the click event for the cancel button.

Our code to handle the ESC key works fine except when the page has a validator.

When the page has a validator, the cancel button click event handler never gets called after the ESC key is pressed.

It works fine when the cancel button is clicked.

It also works fine if we do the same thing and trap any other key.

So it has something to do the ESC key and validation.

Web Forms :: Disable Button After Validation But Before Post Back

Mar 29, 2010

I have orders page. When user submit Order, I need to disable the button to avoid multiple transactions. I also have few validation controls on the page, so button should not be disabled untill page is about to be posted. I dont have any custom javascript for validation. It is just these asp.net validation controls. What is the best way to achieve that? I have spend about 2 hours on google and found various solutions, but nothing seems to work. Each has some issue. On button I add OnClientClick="return btnOnClick this, 'Payment');" Below is what gets called. Unfortunately if I disable button, it cancels post back. So I am calling dopostback and also adding few lines on server side to see which button caused postback. It works fine in IE8 and Chrome. But for Firefox on server side arg comes null. Any ideas what is wrong with my code? Or any other suggestions to do it in a better way?

C# Server side
string arg = this.Request.Params.Get("__EVENTTARGET");
if (arg == "Payment") { this.ProcessPayment(); }
Button
<asp:Button ID="btnSubmitPO" OnClientClick="return btnOnClick(this, 'Payment');" runat="server" Text="Submit Order" ValidationGroup="G" />
alert(group);

Web Forms :: Validating Input In A Custom User Control Using Jquery Validation Plugin?

Jun 18, 2010

I have a custom user control with some input fields and a submit button. I need to validate the fields using the jquery validation plugin when the submit button is clicked. (The function of the submit button is to create another custom control which displays the data entered in the above mentioned control)

Bt as far as I knw, validation plugin works only with form validation ryt? And my custom control does not contain a form tag as I am using master pages. The custom control is present in one of the content pages and the master page already contains a form tag with a runat=server attribute. And I guess one page can contain only a single form tag with runat=server attrib ryt?

So how do I get it to work?

Best Practices For Input Validation?

Jul 3, 2010

What is the common practice of input validation? In other words do you check for input validation on client-side, on server-side or on both sides?

Also, if performance is crucial to me, would just the client-side input validation be sufficient for my website without presenting any security risks?

.net - DataType Input Validation In .NET?

Nov 3, 2010

I'm working on an application that has a large number of inputs for certain types (50 money inputs, 30 date inputs etc). I have been creating an CompareValidator for each one to make sure users are putting in the correct information but I am curious if there is an easier way to create the validation once and apply it to all desired inputs? Writing out 80 validators that do basically the same thing seems like a waste. Am I missing something that already does this in .NET or are there anything out there that can make validation easier?

Note: All validation needs to be done on both the client AND server side. I've read a little about ASP.NET MVC validation but unfortunately that won't be an option here.

MVC :: How To Retain User Input After Validation

Apr 25, 2010

I am making some change to my MVC app to allow user to modify their existing email address contained in the profile. I have 'email' and 'confirm email' fields both which load the existing email address when the user enters the edit page (both textboxes are loaded from the same database field). The issue I am having is that when the user edits the 'email' text field and forgets or enters a different address into the 'confirm' field, validation occurs and instead of retaining what the user entered it loads what's contained in the Model when it tried to save into both fields once again (to the user it would appear that validation should not have occurred). I would like validation to fire and retain what the user initially entered in the text boxes.

For example, if the original email address is [URL] and the user enters [URL] for the 'email' address and forgers or enters a different address into the 'confirm' field, validation fires and loads [URL] into both because that's what was captured during the attempted Save. I would like for [URL] to remain in the 'confirm' textbox, or if the user entered something that never matched that would remain.

How can I get around this but still have the existing email address load into both fields when the user initially enters the 'Edit' area?

C# - How To Handle Input And Parameter Validation Between Layers

Mar 5, 2010

If I have a 3 layer web forms application that takes user input, I know I can validate that input using validation controls in the presentation layer. Should I also validate in the business and data layers as well to protect against SQL injection and also issues? What validations should go in each layer?

Another example would be passing a ID to return a record. Should the data layer ensure that the id is valid or should that happen in BLL / UI?

Turn Off Input Validation For A Single Field?

Sep 27, 2010

I've got an ASP.NET 4 site on which I want to allow people to put '<' in their password. However, .NET gets in the way by blocking (what it sees as) an attempt to put HTML in a form field. I know I can turn off input validation entirely, but I only want to turn it off for this one field. Does anyone know an easy way to do that?
