UpdatePanel Wrapped Around User Control?
Jan 28, 2010
I have a user control which contains some buttons and a placeholder. Those buttons cause controls to be added/removed from placeholder. Everything works fine.
Now I want to put this user control in a page, and wrap it in an updatepanel like so:
<asp:UpdatePanel ChildrenAsTriggers="true" ID="UpdatePanelFoo" runat="server" UpdateMode="Conditional">
<ContentTemplate>
<grid:tablegrid ID="tablegrid_chapters" runat="server" SomeProperty="bar" />
</ContentTemplate>
</asp:UpdatePanel>
When I run the page, it's still doing a full postback when I hit one of the buttons inside the user control. What am I doing wrong, and how can I remedy this?
Update:
protected void Page_Init()
{
ScriptManager scr = ScriptManager.GetCurrent(this.Page);
Response.Write("EnablePartialRendering: " + scr.EnablePartialRendering);
}
Outputs "EnablePartialRendering: true"

I have a custom control created to autofill the box as typed in. Its working great. But if I put the control inside an Update Panel, it works for the full postback but if partial postback happens (because of the update panel), it does not work.

I am creating a user control that I wish to have inner properties as well as normal attributes. Although the actual function of the control has nothing to do with, say, UpdatePanel, I am trying to create something with similar ASPX markup. The developer designing the page should be able to use my control like:
<ns:MyControl ID="someID" runat="server" SomeOtherAttribute="true">
<ContentTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="someLabel" runat="server" Text="Normal page markup and controls should go here" /><br />
<p>This should be OK too.</p>
</ContentTemplate>
<ControlEvent ControlName="idOfOtherControl" Event="Click" />
<ControlEvent ControlName="idOfSomeOtherControl" Event="MouseOver" />
</ns:MyControl>
Also acceptable would be wrapping the ControlEvent tags in some other tag, more like what happens when using UpdatePanel:
<ns:MyControl ID="someID" runat="server" SomeOtherAttribute="true">
<ContentTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="someLabel" runat="server" Text="Normal page markup and controls should go here" /><br />
<p>This should be OK too.</p>
</ContentTemplate>
<ControlEvents>
<ns:ControlEvent ControlName="idOfOtherControl" Event="Click" />........................

Wasn't quite sure where to post this, seems like the issues could be any number of things, so I'm trying to keep it general... mods, feel free to relocate appropriately.
I am trying to build a page which will load various web user controls dynamically in response to menu selections made by the user, and then allow other interactions inside those controls (such as gridview manipulation and updates). The content page simply has a loginview, an ASP:Menu control, and an ASP:Placeholder. The placeholder is filled by the appropriate user control in response to the menu selection. Selecting a menu item causes a postback and the correct control is loaded as expected.
I realized that using dynamic loading with interactive controls would be a problem with respect to postbacks, so I added a ScriptManager to the content page and enclosed the gridview controls in the web user controls within UpdatePanels, thinking that all postbacks required by the GridView would be handled inside the UpdatePanel and not cause the parent page to refresh (which would then wipe out the dynamically loaded control). However, it does not seem to work this way. Instead, although the control containing the GridView loads correctly and displays data, when I attempt to page, edit, or select any item on the GridView, nothing happens on the first click. If I click on any item inside the control a second time, the entire page refreshes and the control and its contents disappear.
I have removed all the code inside the web user control and placed it directly into the content page to test, and everything functions correctly in that case. I think therefore that I must be missing something with how the user control is working, particularly with respect to the UpdatePanel. Is it just not possible to use an UpdatePanel to confine actions inside a user control that would otherwise cause the entire page to postback, or am I missing something somewhere?

I've exempted the irrelevant bits of code. Essentially, I am trying to change the URL of an image control inside of an update panel inside of a custom user control from a function called inside an update panel from my main page. Using UpdatePanel.Update() isn't working: I end up waiting for the next full page POST to occur before all the updates I make to CustomControl from buttons within the main page's update panel are visible. I verified that Update() was being called via the debugger: there are no issues in that department.
Here, you can see Custom Control and the Button declared. The button is in an update panel to avoid giving a full POST and causing the whole page to reload.
<cust:CustomControl runat="server" ID="CustomControl1">
<asp:UpdatePanel runat="server" ID="UpdatePanel1"> <ContentTemplate>
<asp:Button id="Button1" runat="server" OnClick="DoStuff" />
</ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel>
This control stores images within their own seperate update panels because rerendering the images is very slow (it requires processing arrays of millions of datapoints) and the user only ever needs to modify one image at a time. I'm using Image1 as an example.

As you know froms could lead to accessbility issues and unlike PHP when I was dealing with it, everything in ASP.NET we can say is wrapped inside a form. As you know not every elements is a form element and from accessbility point of view the screen readers have what is called 'forms mode' which only interact with form elements. Can anyone calrify why is that in ASP.NET?

I have an asp.net page with a WebMethod on it to pass JSON back to my javascript. Bellow is the web method:
[WebMethod]
public static string getData(Dictionary<string, string> d) {
string response = "{ "firstname": "John", "lastname": "Smith" }";
return response;
}
When this is returned to the client it is formatted as follows:
{ "d": "{ "firstname": "John", "lastname": "Smith" }" }
The problem is the double quotes wrapping everything under 'd'. Is there something I've missed in the web method or some other means of returning the data without the quotes? I don't really want to be stripping it out on the client everytime. Also I've seen other articles where this doesn't happen.

I don't think I understand fully how ASP.NET does inheritance of controls.I have a user control, ucBase, which has an asp.net label in the ascx file. Code behind references the label and it works fine during run time if the control is not a parent for another user parent.
If I have another user control, ucChild, inheriting from ucBase, the label in ucBase's code is always null. ucChild has no controls in its ascx fileThe server controls (like the label) needs to be declared in the ascx file and not created programmatically.What needs to be done for ucBase to see its own controls when it's a parent user control?

I'm writing a formbuilder for our CMS which dynamically loads bespoke controls into panels within a repeater.
The bespoke controls all inherit from, lets say 5arx.FormBuilder.FormControl, a base class which defines abstract methods for initialising, validating, repopulating, gathering submitted data from them. Controls range from simple text fields to complex, composite client-side controls.
It all works very well, but I've noticed something I feel is anomalous. During the course of writing code to retrieve form controls. gather their data and persist it to my database I noticed that their type reverts to the way objects get typed if you write your code in the (v. irritating) VS 'website project' mode.
So, for example a control that is defined as living in a namespace and being of type
5arx.FormBuilder.FormControl.MyBespokeControl
Sarx.FormBuilder.FormControl.MyBespokeControl
at runtime reports its type (via simple call to GetType()) as being of type:
ASP.5arx_FormBuilder_FormControl_MyBespokeControl
ASP.Sarx_FormBuilder_FormControl_MyBespokeControl
Getting the BaseType property will correctly retrieve the underlying class, but it is perplexing to me why this should be happening. Particularly as I spent much of the summer refactoring our app from its original form as VS Website project (complete with shared code in the App_Code folder and other nastiness) to the (IHMO) correct web application project + supporting claass libraries so that we would have control over our namespaces and not get everything compiled into the ASP.x namespace
EDIT: Modified the (hypothetical) example root namespace.

I have a form in a page that is popped up using the jquery dialog thus:
using jquery ui 1.8.9 and jquery 1.4.4
//a button fires this
$("#AppointmentDialog").dialog("open");
<div id="AppointmentDialog">
<h3 runat="server" id="h3Title"></h3>
<table cellpadding="5">
<!-- form -->
<tr>
<td colspan="2"><asp:Button runat="server" ID="butMove" Text="Move Appointment" /></td>
</tr>
</table>
</div>
this is using manky old asp vb .net 2.0 (arghh) so you arent seeing onclick= on the butMoveAppointment but there is this in the code behind
Protected Sub butMoveAppointment_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles butMove.Click
'do stuff
End Sub
so this div dialogs up on a button click, but when i try to submit this popped up form with the
clicking the butMove appointment just does nothing at all if i move it out of the popup it does fire is this because the popup doesnt simply show and centre the styled div? presumably i can get around this somehow?

Lots of people recommend to wrap the MVC JsonReturn result in a textarea to play nicely with jquery forms etc.
That part makes sense but how do I get the json object back in my client jquery code?
The client jquery plugin should look something like this:
// Doesn't work since data is "<textarea>{"error":true,"msg":"foo"}

This is probably something very simple that I've over looked, but I have a template field in a details view. In the field there is a html <p> tag that is bound to a database field. The database field is set to nvarchar(max) and will usually be very long. When the text is loaded into the <p> tag, it is not wrapped and does not go onto a new line when it reaches the edge of the screen.

I have a web user control that represents a simple message box. It is used to display simple messages like "Item has been deleted", or "The item was saved successfully".
On the other hand, I have another web user control that represents the item in the form of an editable form (I made this a user control because this is used in two different pages). I want to embed an instance of the message box user control inside the editable form. I am writing this right after the @Control directive:
[Code]....
Instead of using @Register directives, I register the user controls in web.config and so far this has worked just fine.
With the above markup, the project compiles, but whenever I try to navigate to a page that contains this construct, I get an HttpParseException exception. Furthermore, Visual Studio states that the tack w7rc9:MessageBox doesn't represent a known control.
What am I doing wrong?

In classic ASP it would be something like:

I tried this but no luck!
