VS 2010 - Access Local File System
Apr 26, 2012
I have an ASP.NET page that I need to have access the local file system. It's an intranet. I need to download a zip file and an executable to a temp location and then run the executable.
Then afterwards, I need to delete the contents via an ASP.NET page.
Is there any way to access the local file system? Generally, I would think this would cause a security concern, but I've seen posts about Silverlight being able to access it.

it may not have to do with silverlight as such, but a "security" issue. I appologize if that was wrong.
I´m having a go at silverlight...
I want to display large amount of data in good looking charts. Ideally, I would use a web service. However none of the tutorials I´ve watched works. There´s always some component or class missing.
So I figured I´d do it the "ugly" way, creating a xml file from a dataset, and then reading it in the silverlight app.
Now when debugging, I use a local file, which is apparently not permitted
But there must be a way around it right?

If I have a web application that needs to use a file, it presents the user with a standard open file dialog. But instead of uploading the file to server can it modify the file locally in a temporary location, while uploading in the background? That way the user does not have to wait for the upload before they can use my web app.

My application creates some images at client machine using client side scripting VBScript. I want to store those images in database, so I need some way to bring those images to server without any interaction with users (means I can not use the file upload control).Along with this, application would also like to use the printer attached to client's machine (it could be her network printer), without showing printer dialog.
Basically I need to create some client piece, dll which will handle the scanning, printing and uploading images from client pc to server and web application will interact with this dll.How could I achieve this? I explored a lot on internet. many articles suggest that use activex control, but how in c#?
I am not asking any spoonfeeding. Please show me correct article or small working sample or example, I would figure out the rest.

I m trying to read the tags of a local HTML file. I found out this code online but it works for the aspx pages on the server and of the current app only.
___________________________________________________
using System.Web.UI.HtmlControls;
foreach (Control c in this.Page.Header.Controls)
{
if (c.GetType() == typeof(HtmlMeta))[code]...
THis code acceses the following section of an html page -
<meta name="Keywords"content=" B=Msdn;A=Forums;L=en-US;"
/>
My question is how can i do the same for a local(client) html page?
Can i do it for a html page on server?

I created a website using VS2010. When I run the website using built-in web server, everything works fine. The website recognizes javascript and aurigma uploader. When I publish the website to local folder and tried to access using IIS 5.1 on local pc,
the java scipt files did not work. I was getting yellow triangle sign at the bottom of the page indicating the object is expected. I tried to look online but i could not find any answer. I have included jquery and javascript file in the header section of master

I have been given a task of reproducing the issue/testing the unauthorized access to file system through request.param and query string.
For instance i have something like this. request.querystring("blah");
How could somebody pass "../../../b1/b2" in the query string and access file system.
This may be related to cross site scripting.

There is a hyperlink to a local file...for instance....C:/text.txt. This is not possible, because ASP.net does not allow links to local files. But, links to files on network drives such as W:/test.txt are working ok. how does the browser know which drive letter is local,and which is networked? How does it know that C: is local or D: is local etc, and that W: is a network drive?

this is an extremely frustrating situation. We have just upgraded to Visual Studio 2010, and very nice it is, except for when it won't do something really simple, like Publish your ASP.NET Web Application to a folder on your desktop.For some unearthly reason, what used to work flawlessly in 2008 is now generating an error: It stops Publishing, after successfully Building, saying:Error: Copying file ImagesProfile32_32.JPG to objx64ReleasePackagePackageTmpImagesProlfile32_32.JPG failed. Could not find file 'ImagesCelebrityProfileImages32_32.JPG'.The problem is that there isn't any reference to that file in the project code (in the database, yes, but not in the code itself), and we don't want to store such images with the project (and they're not).Why (and how) has it suddenly decided that this unreferenced image (and presumably more if I get it to move past this one) is suddenly necessary to run the project? How can I stop this from happening?

I started working on an ASP.NET web app for my companies local intranet. While coding it, I emailed our IT team, to get an intranet domain/server setup.
So, they emailed me back with the server credentials+the domain. But, I'm not really sure what to do from here.
How I need to setup the server and ASP.NET settings to get everything working?

I'm using one XP with SP 2 as my local Laptop PC . Its IIS has one default web site, of course, which is the site I'm working on. When some feature is finished I deploy it to my "production" site which is hosted somewhere else. Very common situation, I guess. This app uses email to notify customers of some particular events. Works on production, but sometimes I need to change something in the way those notifications work. Currently I have to upload the changes to "production" to check it out. Is there any way for me to set up smtp server on my local machine so I could work locally with those features?

I've just downloaded VS2010 Express to play with on my personal laptop. However, when I try to open an existing website through the "Open Web Site..." / "Local IIS" button, the system trundles on for a bit and then says: "To access local IIS Web sites, you must install the following IIS components: In addition, you must run Visual Studio in teh context of an administrator account."
Note the blank line after the "you must install...." [strikeout]Is this a limitation of the "Express" editions of Visual Studio? [/strikeout] I've just installed VS2010 Premium from our MSDN DVD and it has the same problem.... Also, seems to have broken VS2008 as well since I can no longer browse Local IIS from VS 2008 either. Good thing I installed this on my backup machine first and I can still get work done on my main development machine!
